Those Audi 200s were insane. Forced the SCCA to rewrite the entire rule book the following season which essentially changed Trans-am into a spec series.

no awd and the engine had to be made in the usa. its an understatement to say they rest of the top drivers were salted. well salted lol

Stuck would win the championship if he drove all races. He shared car with Walter Rohrl, another legend. And even with all handicaps they forced on Audi, they still won title.

@@diesel_cat6389 Stuck had most wins. If you count in Rohrls points, both driving legends and audi factory drivers that developed that car, audi would be 1-2. Those cars were just another level. Purebreed racers, not just pumped stock cars like rest of the field.

I saw Han Stuck race that Audi at Sears Point and he was passing people on the outside, so cool to see. At some point they punished the Audis by dramatically increased their weight, turned down their boost and made them run on the skinnier tires. A shame they didn't just let the other teams try to catch up.

The rest of the teams couldn't keep up since they were Privateers, Audi came in with 4 times the budget and won because they had better tire wear than anyone else, they weren't the fastest on a single lap but had better Chassis Design and AWD to help with traction and tire wear later on in the race. In Imsa, they still were reaping the benefits of that tire wear advantage, but were outqualified by the Nissans, Chevies, and Mercury Cougar on 1 lap pace, all.of which used antiquated tech. Though overall race pace meant it could last better than everyone else in a war of attrition. The Turbo inline 5 just couldn't bear the mandatory additional ballast everyone ran, and always did Catch up To the Mercury Cougar-X in the championship standings.

I was too young to understand the politics of racing when this race occurred, but it seems to me the “anti-import” sentiment was the beginning of the end of Trans-Am’s 80’s glory days. The racing and names were good for another 5 years or so but slowly the big names and up and comers went to other series. By the early 2000’s TA was a shell of itself, when I saw them at Texas Motor Speedway as an ALMS opener. Mostly Pro-Am drivers paying out of pocket to race. By my reckoning the writing was on the wall for pipe and fiberglass cars, GT racing was the future. TA is still around, it runs in conjunction with a historic racing series. TA2 is actually the series to watch. NASCAR teams run their development drivers through there as the importance of road racing in NASCAR increases. I’d love to see TA regain its former glory, and as GT racing costs spiral into the stratosphere, maybe the ole pipe n fiberglass cars will get their due again.

Also, the Audi's weren't the only turbocharged cars that year. So yeah, they we're slowing the Audi's down to make it less embarrassing for their shit American cars instead of trying to catch up.

It was more because of the AWD. The turbo or engine didn't matter, as shown V6 and V8 cars could still hold their ground. I agree. Banning the use of AWD was stupid and limited the amount of manufactures willing to ever think about competing. Further cements Audis racing heritage
