1988 NLCS, Game 4: Dodgers @ Mets

Спорт

Los Angeles Dodgers 5 at New York Mets 4, F/12 -- Backed by homers from Darryl Strawberry and Kevin McReynolds, Dwight Gooden and the Mets enjoyed a 4-2 lead in the 9th, and seem poised to take a 3-1 series lead. But Mike Scioscia, who had only three home runs all season, had other ideas, and his two-run homer forced extra frames. Then in the 12th, Kirk Gibson foreshadowed his forthcoming World Series dramatics with a solo, go-ahead dinger off Roger McDowell. But it wasn't over yet. In the bottom half of the inning it looked as though Gibson's heroics might go to waste, as the Mets put two men on against Tim Leary. So Manager Tommy Lasorda called on his "bulldog," Orel Hershiser, to close it out. Despite having pitched into the ninth in Game 1, not to mention seven innings pitched in Game 3 the night before, Hershiser recorded the final out to tie the series at two games apiece.

Lasorda saved the game when he ran out in the bottom of the 12th to tell Orosco to challenge Strawberry and throw strikes. Not many managers today will do that in the middle of an at-bat. I really hate the new rules limiting mound visits. They are part of the game. Who cares if baseball is too slow? It’s supposed to be a slow game. No clocks in baseball, only innings. It’s a timeless sport.

Never thought much of Lasorda, but in this amazing game the guy showed LEADERSHIP. That chew-out of Orosco! Masterful handling of his pitchers here, but most of all, he seemed to convey calm and confidence to his players. The little Dodgers here never seemed to panic even though they seemed doomed. How did the Mets lose this game and series? 1988 proved (L.A. went on to easily slay the 'roided A's as well) there is much to say about sunniness in a leader.

This game is the most classic interaction between one of the greatest broadcast crews in all of baseball history. And yes, I know people rag on Tim McCarver, especially when he was teamed up with Joe Buck and felt like he had to do it all. But as part of a team with Michaels and Palmer, this was a thing of beauty. It really was a team with those three, and you could tell how much they loved what they were doing, and really enjoyed each other's company. They play off each other so well.

Again though, it's a lot more than that. McCarver was an absolutely integral part of this team. I think the bigger issue was when he was with Joe Buck he had no one to balance him out or to play off of, so he started feeling the need to do everything, and that's how the overkill started. I still found him quite informative even then, though yes, he would sometimes overanalyze. But with this team with Michaels and Palmer it was just the right balance and oh, the chemistry between these three. They were like a comedy trio!

If you watch video "Battle Lines '88 WS" Hershiser went down to the bullpen on his own sometime after Gibson's HR and told Mark Cresse that Lasorda sent him, which was not true. Cresse calls Lasorda and Lasorda says to warm him up. Perranoski tells Lasorda that he's sticking his head into a guillotine. What happens if they tie the game. Win or lose you burn up Hershiser because he's all there is. Lasorda says, 'I don't care. I'm putting it all on the Bulldog.' Gibson was amazing. He hit just .290 (low for an MVP) didn't even lead the team in RBI (76) but he had 18 go ahead hits and won some other games with his glove and a few on the base paths. He would find a way to get on, steal second and somehow score. One night he scored the game winner coming all the way from 2nd base on a WP. Whatever it took to win he did it over and over that year. Sparky Anderson said it best: 'People say he's not a hall of famer and I won't argue with that. But everyone wishes they wanted to win as much as he does.'

While the Mets on paper were prohibitive favorites, the reality was that the Dodgers were an extremely tough opponent. The Dodgers pitching was every bit as good as the Mets, and the Mets offense relied too much on the home run, certainly far more than in 1986. Playoff baseball demands small ball because the pitching you are facing is top notch and you got to scratch and claw for every run. The Mets, unlike 1986, were not that type of team anymore.

Losing Kevin Mitchell, then Dykstra, and Hernandez, and Knight and Carter hastened that decline. That window for titles was a very small one.you're right tho. Station to station teams usually don' t win World Series

That's why Kashen should have resigned Ray Knight to the 2-year deal he wanted, and he shouldn't have traded Kevin Mitchell after 86. The Mets were more resourceful and their pitching was more reliable. Remember, they won the NLCS against the Astros with a combined .189 BA, which meant they had to be very resourceful and rely on small ball instead of the long ball. Losing Mitchell and Knight changed the chemistry drastically.

This game went against the law of averages for sure. Everything pointed to the Mets pounding the Dodgers as the game went on and the Dodgers just hung on in the bottom of the 6th after Carter got to 3rd on the triple and didn't score. Then the Mets didn't score after having runners on in the 9th, 10th, and 11th innings. The Dodgers really only threatened in the top of the 9th when 2 runners got on after the very unlikely Sciossia home run against Gooden. The Dodgers didn't look like they could score in extra innings until there were 2 outs and no one on and Gibson gets a fat 0-1 pitch. The Dodgers were very fortunate to win starting a hittable Tudor vs. Gooden.

I still can't believe it stayed in the air long enough to be caught. This was when baseball was baseball. No DH. Pitchers going 9. Managers (well, Lasorda) managing from their gut rather than being enslaved to analytics. Baseball was so good back then. I loved this.

You saw the plus side and the downside of the WHEN MEN WERE MEN era of guys pitching until their arms fall off, all in the same game. Orel Hershiser comes in to get the last out after throwing 111 pitches the night before...Dwight Gooden surrenders a game-tying HR with not one but two viable closers (Myers and McDowell) sitting on their butts in the bullpen. In the modern game there's no way Gooden even starts the inning, and certainly doesn't face the tying run. Maybe the closer blows the game anyway but you at least have the fresh man in the game.

What a big money AB by Shelby leading off the 9th at 2:23:08. The Scioscia HR either doesn't happen or is just a footnote without the BB. Might be one of the bigger turning-point ABs in the history of the game. So many aspects make this one of the classics in the modern era: it was the swing game in the series, the Howell suspension, that Belcher was at the hotel for a short turnaround to Game5 making Hershiser the last option in the pen. "Lasorda's worst nightmare is a tie after 12. Well, second worst, but you know what I mean."
