Love Chuck’s “hair helmet”.....wow does this bring back memories. I remember watching this show with my Dad and really appreciating Shula’s candor and access to his insights. What a great coach and leader....very special time for the franchise and the fans!!! Thanks for the video.

Not only Marino but Duper as well. Talk about a momentous decision.

I remember this move like it was last week. Duper and Marino had been practicing together during and after practice of months, they were both 2nd string at that time, so Shula knew exactly what he was bringing in by using them both at the same move, it clicked instantly and the next week even better and from then on, those two along with Clayton and Nat Moore were unstoppable. Marino broke all the passing records, some of those were 20 years old and it was another 20 years and lot's of rule changes before anyone could break his, but believe me, without the rule changes, Marino would still own all the records, he was just that great. Can you imagine Marino playing with todays rules where no one can hit him in the legs or the head? The receivers can't get hit in the head or while looking at the ball, or going over the middle? Or man, Those guys would be insane to watch now. It's a team sport like no other and the Dolphins only had two good defenses and never a good running back while Marino played and those two years of good, not great, but good defenses Dan went to the Super Bowel and the AFC championship game, the rest of his years, the defenses were always near the bottom of the NFL and never above average, Lets' see how many super bowels are won without a good defense, none. I say all that because idiots that never played the game keep saying Dan could never win the big one, that's true, but it had nothing to do with his performances. Nothing.

Bill, Pro-Football-Reference would disagree with you about how a QB's performance affects his team. They did a study to see how much VALUE a QB gave to his team in the Reg. Season and then a separate study fot the playoffs. Marino was in the Top 10 for QB's in the Reg. Season, but not even in the Top 100 for the playoffs.

They found that Dan gave his team a NEGATIVE VALUE in 10 playoff games which included 3 championship games-the '84 S.B., the '85 Conf. Champ., and the '92 Conf. Champ. On top of that there were 2 games of Value in the single digits. Overall Marino's Value was a terrible NEGATIVE 156.

Favre's Value was 302, Warner 422, Staubach 461, Aikman 527, Young 580, Elway 767, Bradshaw 903, and Montana 1,292. This study was done from '67 thru '06 so no full totals for Unitas, Starr, Brady, Manning, etc., etc. Again Marino's Value was NEGATIVE 156. Ironic that those 2 at the top each played good enough to help their teams win 4 S.B.'s and their Values are very high.

Here are Marino's stats from his 3 championship game losses-4 TD's BUT 6 INT's and 2 fumbles, an avg. Passer rating of UNDER 60, and he led his team to an avg. of only 12 p.p.g. That is how you get 3 NEGATIVE VALUE Championship games that all ended in losses for his team. Yes, Dan's bad performances made that possible.

Now to be fair, his great performance in the '84 Conf. Champ. game is what led to his teams' win and that is his highest Value game in the playoffs. But there were 3 very bad championship games and only 1 very good one. That is the problem for Marino.

As an old Dolphins fan (I still remember sitting on the couch with my Dad watching the perfect season Super Bowl) I read one of the many Dolphin Biography's I've read over the years which stated that Shula saw within the 1st two weeks of training camp that 13 was a special player and he saw to it that Marino was force fed the playbook and audibles to get him up to speed as quick as they could...

Growing up in Opa-Locka i got to see this thing unfold in training camp at Biscayne College. Watching the 4 quarterbacks in camp it was CLEAR than Dan was a completely different breed.
