Seriously this lineup looks better than many of today's IFBB pro shows...... mass with class

It's not cliché. Not in this case. These TRULY WERE the good old days. Aesthetically pleasing physiques with proper mass in balance that looked attainable and most of all they looked healthy. Yes they used gear too but nowhere near the level these grotesque, misshapen and distended belly monsters look like now do.

That Literally Was The Difference Maker! In Relaxed Pose, Rory Could Not Compare With That Perfection. It Was Like Standing Next To a Dam Michael Angelo Statue! You Can Visibly See It! If You Take The Relaxed Pose Out Of It, It’s Dead Even!

Bob truly had the perfect body. And timeless proportions.

Christian thought it was an "Upper Body Only" contest. He not only had small calves, but his thighs especially his hamstrings were weak.

Bodybuilding at its finest ....maybe just my age but I feel it has never been as good ....yes am old ...forgive me, nothing stays the same I realise that ....still love MY sport !!!

yep he should have did some more front squats and calf raises cant win the show with an incredible upper but then weak legs. he realized that in his later years tho and started placing better

His calf weakness was Genetic, and they never even came close to the competitions lower leg development! Yet he was awarded wins over men who possessed bodies with none of his flaws.

Its so weird to see these guys compared to what happened through the late 90s and 2000s. These guys are huge, but because they are proportional, from a distance they look like fairly big ripped guys. Up close they were massive

To give Gaspari and Mendenhall lower position than Mike "no legs" christian is a national tragedy and his response is even more pathetic. What else did he expect?

@@anabolicstephen8387 Spoken like a true horse's ass! Granted, Arnold's legs were small and soft at the 1980 Olympia. That being said, people always equate Arnold's leg development to the '75 Olympia. Look at his legs at the '73 & '74 Olympias. His legs were huge and cut.

This video dates the times when it wasn't about sheer size but grace and proportion. Maybe Bob Paris was the last of the great amazing and proportionate bodybuilders of all times.

Mike Christian should have been 6th with that no leg days...lol Wait a minute there were only 5 guys on the stage... What the heck I would still give him the sixth place 😂🤣😂

+Oh adams Gotta remember, most of these guys have egos that are just as inflated as their muscles. Each one thinks he is the best thing to hit that stage and that they have absolutely no flaws in their physique at the time of the contest. Combine this with all the steroids they take and I'm surprised Mike Christain didn't go into a roid rage over 3rd place. Gaspari looked pissed as well. Christian & Gaspari don't realize their physiques' have flaws that prevent them from winning that top spot.

What tremendous physiques they all had! It's ironic that the 5th place finisher here (Gaspari) had by far the greatest success in the pro ranks. It's a shame that Rory and Matt never made it to the pros - amazing physiques but they just never seemed able to put it all together for those pro cards.....

Mike Christian looked like he wanted to throw that trophy and then walk off-stage. I remember being a teenager when these guys were pro's....truly legendary physiques.... They all look fantastic..all having incredibly full and rounded muscle bellies. Great symmetry, etc.

Very difficult call between Rory Leidelmeyer and Bob Paris. I prefer the more heavily muscled but beautiful Leidelmeyer physique and admire his good grace. Paris had a slimmer waist and is more charismatic than the brooding Leidelmeyer which makes a difference to the judges.

Bob Paris is very similar to Frank Zane. Both intelligent, both classy and both with amazing symmatry. I am very impressed with what the male physic should look like. I am amazed that freakish size and bulk would eventually win out over proportion. Bob looked the best of al of them. Take another look at the beginning of the video when all five are lined up.

Matt Mendenhall did not reach his best at this point (but was astonishing later)...Gaspari looked better than Matt in 83...

Mike Christian was probably saying to himself, "They didn't choose me cause I'm black. The judges were racist!". Not realizing that his legs needed a lot of work.

I agree with you that these days many guys at the top level have weak calves...it's quite common amongst black bodybuilders who have high calf insertions. But there are exceptions...

How Mike Christian thinks he got screwed is beyond me he had at that time some glaring leg weakness and other than his most muscular was lost in the top 5. 3rd place was a gift.

@@JerkVegas86 Later on bro he brought up his legs and they were top level but not at this stage. I think there are some vids on youtube of the comparisons at prejudging and you can clearly see that his legs are at this stage lacking.

Mike Christian never understood that he had no legs. He was lucky to place as high as he did. Poor sport.

You know that trophy girl had absolutely no complaints getting to kiss all those bodybuilders

love these guys they are about as close to natural looking as youre gonna get compared to the monsters today

Rory and Bob both look amazing, as did the others. That would not be an easy competition to judge. Getting back to the top two, it could have gone either way, but Bob won because he has slightly better genetics. He looks like he was put together by a computer and if you add that to his conditioning and overall balance he was the best choice. Even though Matt and Rory never went on to be pros, most people that know anything about bodybuilding know who they are because they both had such awesome physiques.

What a contest this was, with Gaspari in fifth and Mendenhall fourth. Rory looked excellent here.

Rory must relive this often!!!....so close!!

I assure you, sir, he didn't compare to other competitors. He wrote about this in his book "Gorilla Suit." He wrote numerous letters to Joe to do drug testing on the pro levels and Joe who promised to clean up the sport fired back at him. It's a good read.

Very similar ... no but very close in a certain aspect yes ... rory and bob was the best artistic poser ever ... with Frank zane they are for me the holy trinity of symmetry, aesthetics and posing they had a way to make there body look so right without looking that they're even trying hahaha xD... they didn't need to be freakishly big ... the proportion where perfect and the posing with athleticism and arts was so great at that time ... Rory, Bob and Frank were all mr.olympia in there own right.

Bob Paris has always been an icon of the perfect physique for me but i have to say this Rory guy also outstanding with thick round muscle bellies in all areas, plus i like how he shows off his calves against no legs sour grapes mike.

Look at all that headful of hair! Wow, these guys were actually attractive overall.

Back in the day when symmetry and good size mattered. Congrats to Bob Paris. Sad for Matt M. as later in life he became my trainer....just couldn't get ripped enough.

What calves?

Rory and Bob have classical proportions. They still look natural and human, too. Both of them were aesthetically pleasing with a great balance of mass and definition. Nice sleek lines. I guess I could go on and on but a lot of this has already been said in the other comments. Anyway, it makes me want to work out yet harder using these ideals as goals.

Looks like Rory was holding a little water, Paris was harder. But I still much prefer Rory's physique, much fuller muscle bellies. Paris looked flat in comparison.

hard to decide, but Bob is sexier i would say. Both are great.

Yeah, man. I think Bob deserved this victory, totally! I think Mike's reaction to his placement show's real poor sportsmanship and disrespect to his fellow competitors! Besides, and quite rightly so, someone said that Mike's legs definately need more work. Proportion was out. Hence third place.He shoulda shown a bit more dignity in defeat.

1) Paris 2) Leidelmeyer 3) Mendenhall 4) No Leg Development Christian 5) Gaspari. Nightmare Judging for 1ST. 2 of the best Physiques in History... Basically it comes down to a preference between the 2. As much as I like Rory, to be fair, I'd probably flip a coin!!!

You have a good point there. EVen though Bob didn't use it in large amounts like others did nevertheless he did use it. I used to workout at Gold's from the late 80's to early 90's. I met Mike, Troy, Tony P., and Kevin L, but not Bob. Where do you workout now?
