I was actually there at the 1984 Olympia. We had no idea who was going to be competing, as that was before the internet. I was hoping that Zane would make an appearance, but it was a huge and pleasant surprise when Sergio came out. He was big, but not cut enough to really compete.

For those who don't know. Sergio was an excellent Olympic Weightlifter with Cuba before seeking asylum in the United States. He was also a police officer in the city of Chicago and was shot by his wife, didn't die though. Don't remember what ever became of that. Met Sergio in 2003 at his booth at the Mr. Olympia competition and had some picture taken with him.

Sergio had a domestic incident with his then-wife Arleen in the summer of 1986 and she grabbed his revolver shooting him several times down the block from me on Ridge Avenue in Chicago's Rogers Park. His muscle and the doctors/surgeons at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL saved his life! Sergio, Jr. was still a baby and talked about it in a couple of interviews. They had a daughter named Julia in 1987, went to the same high school I did. Sweet beautiful young lady I last saw at her Dad's wake. And regardless of the domestic incident Arleen is a wonderful person being very supportive of her son's bodybuilding career moving upward. Sergio & Arleen did divorce late 1980s memory serves me correctly and he remained a Chicago Policeman until retiring in 2003 living in the same neighborhood. With Sergio, Sr's history in Cuba, getting shot in defending Batista when Castro was doing his coup' d teat revolution and then got out to the U.S. helping others escape with him at the Games in Jamaica running to the U.S. Embassy after Castro took over and moving to a very segregated Chicago in the early 1960s without knowing English - a movie should be made about his successes, ups and downs as I think Sergio had more to overcome than Arnold IMHO.

I also saw him in the '84 Olympia and thought he was a shadow of his former self but I also thought he was a top 4 competitor. His 8th place was booed by the fans and it wasn't till he had his wife hand him Sergio Jr that the booing died down. By the way, Lee Haney was awesome that day.

Jones trained Sergio for the 1971 Nabba Pro Mr. Universe, not the 1972 Mr. Olympia. This can be confirmed by Ellington Darden who worked for Jones. Sergio trained on his own for the '72 Olympia. His training routine for the '72 Olympia was published in Dan Lurie's Muscle Training Illustrated Magazine.

lindsey607 I'd second that being a gym member of his and just in the course of conversation sitting with him for lunch at Mike's Place in Chicago's Rogers Park. He was polite and pleasant but fiercely independent. He could be charming at times but from a business etiquette perspective and persona he lacked polish in dealing with people at times and could come off as "don't fuck with me, don't bother me" at moments. He got a little pissed one time when I started asking Sergio about Joe Weider and he told me his book coming out in 2007 was going to reveal his side of the story as to what happened behind the scenes with Joe Weider and he did in collaboration with Frank Marchante. One time around 1990-1991 at his Powerhouse Gym at Lincoln Avenue and McCormick Avenue on the Chicago/Lincolnwood border that Sergio co-owned I heard him get angry at someone in his office while I was working out - it sounded like a business deal gone bad and falling out argument. And sadly that gym he had was closed down within a couple years. He had one before that called Power & Beauty he co-owned with his then-wife Arleen on Rogers Avenue in Chicago in our neighborhood. Overall I thought Sergio was a good guy. He was encouraging to me, answered questions about training & nutrition. Like Arnold said he truly was "one of a kind" despite the lack of business savvy and misgivings. Best, Dave in Wisconsin via Chicago

Great video Nick but you should have added some shots from Sergio's 1985 Olympia routine. Sergio's body in 1984 was malnourished - and he still took eighth! He was on a low carb or zero carb diet made popular for a while by Zane but this was bad for Sergio's fast metabolism so he came in overdepleted and kind of flat plus he posted poorly. He looked improved in his last Mr. Olympia in 1985 and would have completed again had it not been for the shooting here in Rogers Park Chicago. And he may have been 9-10 years older than what was listed.

Sergio did not blame his wife's dietary advice in 1984, when he was still huge, he blamed her for his 1985 condition, when he did indeed follow a low fat diet, and lost a lot of size. Reportedly he was as big as a house in 1986 before the shooting.

Sergio was ahead of his time he had perfect proportions smallest waist I've ever seen on stage only thing he needed more muscle separation in common more dried out but he had the size at that time they didn't have the science they have today so they were still experimenting today he would place the top five with this stuff out now and the new nutrition in whatever
