I learned to drive in that model truck when I was 22 years old..it was 1985..I had not driven a truck, only in a parking lot. My boss took me to an on ramp on I 40, and put me behind the wheel, I had to learn to shift gears by figuring them out...I drove for 2 weeks without a class A, then went and got my licence first try...I came in the hard way, but in the end, it was the best for me.

I spent a few nights crawling over the dog house getting into my Dad's sleeper when I'd go on trips with him as a kid, that was also my hiding spot when he was loading or unloading , because back in those days a lot of companies didn't allow family ride along .

Back when I started driving 80% of company trucks were cabovers. My first over the road truck was a 85 freight shaker with a 300 Cummins , 9 spd spring suspension. Newbies don't know how good they have it today.

Back in the 70s & 80s I put an awful lot of miles behind me in cabovers. My favorite was a 1982 White Road Commander 2 (Road Commode) with a floating high-back driver's side air seat. The truck was powered by a Cat 3406b & with an18 speed road ranger transmission ; I loved that truck

State of the art in 1983. First big truck I ever drove was an old international cabover...probably a late 60s model luckily it was just every now and then moving trailers for company that built trailers. That old pos would beat the crap out of you bobtail...it was so long ago I almost forgot about that manbeater! Thanks for sharing love your videos! 😃 👍

Drivers began to complain about getting in and out of them-thus companies used conventionals as a marketing tool to recruit drivers. Also, the length law was changed to long rigs. They are all still made but not many marketed in the states. Take a look at the K 200's that run in Australia-super nice!

I put in a lot of miles in those old rigs. Wish u could take a trip in it so we could see your reaction. That metallic clutch is finicky.. try to take off from an intersection and you'll just sit there and HOP like hell til the it decides it's done. You've not lived.

Reminds me of my first driving job in the mid70s. Midwestern Destruction Company ran teams with those and what power! We ran fuel squeezer 290 cummins and 13 speeds. Back then running 48 states you had to be 55 ft max and 73280 max weight. On days you had a headwind that friggin 290 would barely get up to 55mph. Oh, and just to make things interesting the company took the hand valves off because all the lease to buy guys were frying the trailer brakes .....I don't think we had jakes, either....You learn real fast about taking your time goin' downhill.

Put a ½ ton steel "C" beam bumper, and the parabolic springs on the front end and transform the ride. Most American CoEs suffered from high unsprung weight ratios due to having alloy cabs etc., sometimes even chassis, but heavy duty, short travel springs and heavy axles. Adding a very heavy bumper redresses the problem in the simplest manner ..... as proven on a few occasions.

Change a few things, clean it up a lot..an move that air cleaner out of the middle of the cab ( my god that looks dumb ) be a nice old truck. To bad its cummins powered....My dad had one a lot like it when I was a kid. But it had a different trim package..The truck was dark red, lots of chrome and the inside was nicer than the average fleet style truck. The steering wheel was the old semi transparent dark red with glitter in it, the shift knob an switch extentions matched chrome gauges an all that. The cab to his is in an old junk yard about 10 miles from my house.
