Wood Brothers run a Ford Thunderbird in 1981 with Neil Bonnett driving. There was a rule change in 1981 and cars changed from a 115 inch wheelbase to 110 inch wheelbase

Suspicious pair of perfectly-timed caution flags for "debris" (which wasn't shown) that allowed local favorite Bobby Allison to get back onto the lead lap and into contention after making an unscheduled pit stop. I was surprised and disappointed to see that NASCAR was pulling those shenanigans way back in 1981.

Interesting...the bumper coming off made him even faster the following year at Daytona too. Don't know if it was on purpose but very ironic what happened there, and his crew chief was Gary Nelson at the time. I do agree the cautions seem suspicious and he was doing some good blocking on the last lap as well.

@@topmech71it wouldn’t surprise me Allison just pressed a button that dislodged the bumper. In fact I’ll betya that’s exactly what happened

@tfflhq Dave told me he was a "last minute" replacement for Bob this day.I don't recal why Bob was available, he was back for Dover but was also "missing" at Atlanta in November. (Mike Joy took his place). This was Larry's first NASCAR race for ESPN.

Don't be so sanguine given that the sport has seen too many near-hits (driver concussions, serious injuries to Sterling Marlin, Jerry Nadeau, Michael Annett, and Eric McClure to name four off the top of my head) to definitively say the HANS has been as effective as advertised.
