Спорт

Bobby Allison wins his first Daytona 500, 1978 is the last Daytona 500 that wasn't shown in it's entirety, the broadcast was part of ABC's Wide World of Sports. sorry about the quality, but this is what broadcast TV looked like in 1978

Yes, I have the footage from the 64, 66, 71 and 74 editions, they were released on DVD by ISC in 2008. The 64, 66 and 71 versions are likley "fairly" complete as WWOS would usually show it as either a 30 or 45 minute segment. Now, the 1974 version has been cut down in length by at least 50% as ABC allowed 90 minutes...the same as 1978...for the last part to be shown live. 76 was given 2 hours. ABC actually carried the Daytona 500 in 1962 with McKay, Economaki and Sterling Moss on the "team".

The safety piece from 30:10-32:07 was part of a segment that was pre-recorded and aired during the first part of ABC's broadcast of the 1976 Daytona 500. It aired during the caution for Salt Walther's spin and also included the horrifying crash of Red Farmer in the 1975 Permatex 300 and as featured how NASCAR extricated drivers and how fires inside the cars were fought back in the 1970s.

From a crew person that was in the pits for #200...... the 43 was 1" lower than template the whole time that week. Reagan was coming, and it was fitting for it to happen that day. Did it matter, who knows? Remember a few of the 200 were a little skewed, as they counted qualifiers back then, and #199 was controversial to say the least.

I was at this race as a 12 year old kid. Petty changed from the Dodge Magnum mid season after no wins- it might have been different had he not blown the tire and crashed.

The 1978 Daytona "500" was the last to not be telecast in its entirety. ABC had a few brief reports of the early part of the race during other sports programming, then carried the final portion live, as seen in this clip. After 1978, when ABC's deal with the Daytona Speedway expired, the Daytona International Speedway decided they wanted to have the race telecast live and in its entirety starting in 1979. The speedway put the contract out to bid, and CBS was the surprise winner of the contract to carry the race from 1979 through 1983. CBS would go on to carry the race for 32 years (1979-2000).

The claim is that this is 'broadcast' quality in 1978. Having seen the original broadcast, I have to say, this is broadcast quality +30 years growing old on VHS... the broadcast was not this bad.

+hamtrak That was actually a Magnum he was driving in the 500 to about mid season that year as were the other of the last Dodge teams (Neil Bonnet and Buddy Arrington) in Nascar at the time. 1977 was the last full time year Richard and other Chrysler teams in Nascar used to race with the 1974 Charger body style but were allowed to use it for one more race at the old and famous Riverside, CA road course track which before 1982 used to be the first official race of the season in January right after new years and Nascar permitted the teams back in the day that they could still use their same cars and equipment they raced with the year before and then go back to their shops and build and prepare their new year model cars for Daytona and the rest of the season in general. Now also at the time since Detroit and the U.S. car makers had stopped out of the sport in the early 70's from heavily supporting the operations of the major teams back in the day, Nascar created and declared a rule that the teams could use a certain model of car that they got from local dearlerships that became a hit among both the driver and team, could race it for three years. So technically 1976 would have been last year to use the '74 Charger for Richard and other Dodge teams could use to race with but Chrysler had not made any new Dodge race worthy cars yet. Nascar then permitted Richard, etc to use the Charger for one last year in '77. By 1978, Dodge finally unveiled the new Magnum to the public and the teams. To put it this way, the new car was fast and was competitive especially on the big tracks like Daytona but it was no where near as good as the Charger. Finally by middle of the season, Richard admitted it was "undriveable" and switched to the Chevy Monte Carlos and Olds. Cutlasses for the rest of the season and through the end of 1980 when the Gov. was requiring the auto makers to make smaller cars for 1981.

The 1978 Daytona 500 marked the beginning of the end of the marriage between Richard Petty and the Chrysler make Corporation. Instead of the Dodge Charger, they gave the King a Dodge Magnum. To put it simply, the car was a bust. Halfway through the season, Petty ended his tenure with Chrysler, and he began racing GM cars in Winston Cup.

  • @jimbosc

2 issues with the Dodge Magnum - the body was not very slick including a short rear glass that made handling tricky. Also - Petty Enterprises was struggling to get power out of the LA block to match GM which was able to run the SBC in all GM makes in 1978. Without corporate support Petty decided joining the GM bandwagon would give his team the best chance to win - and based on results after the change and 1979....he was right.

Nascar has too many rules which makes competition in the garage impossible. Everyone is equally the same...(boring)... a/c , sophisticated electronics and no testosterone drivers... in turn they all play golf up at the lead. Oh forgot... is it any wonder then that even the ladies now can race... gees... its like a 3d arcade on the track.

as I recall Richard said the Magnums were to big and wide and ate up tires...they WERE land yachts. I remember them showing how bad the tires on that car got chewed up. Only stands to reason that Petty enterprises knew they couldn't fix the car being too big as the reason they switched to GM. The engines could be fixed had that been the case but the car design couldn't. Sad day and pretty much the end of Chrysler Corp. as we once knew it in that time period.

@@bultacowally Also, because of all the rain they had that week, along with the fact that the track had never been repaved, the track was actually tearing up in turns 3 and 4, something Bobby Allison mentioned in his victory lane interview, and which resulted in no fewer than four cut tires. Along with Petty, Benny Parsons, Jerry Jolly, and Buddy Baker also suffered cut tires. Parsons' cut tire led to his spin, which in turn, resulted in A.J.'s rollover when he got hit by Lennie Pond. Jolly's cut tire resulted in a 4-car incident on the backstretch on lap 92 (at about 12:30), though none of the cars were damaged and all of them finished the race, and Baker's cut tire cost him the lead in the latter stages of the race, which he later regained before his engine blew.

The year of the start of the end... the great cars and of course the legendary 426 were at the end. Petty with 5 wins with the 426 secret and GM and Ford just couldn't match. So they took a sissy fit and made Chrysler into nothing by using to many stupid rules and the cars got ugly and dangerous. So the fix more rules and politics . Today they're all clones of Nascar developers not auto manufacturers competition. And that's why it's like a live arcade game .... Boring... and to make it worse now the ladies are invited. To me it's like watching a automobile golf game ⛳🏌️‍♂️and the only thing left to attract is a crash in a 10 car pile up... why because the cars are all clones of each other , no 426 or 427 on the hoods and all advertisements. They all crowd together up front and no one has a secret as their A/C blasts and their cell phone mounted in front of them with instructions. 100% Testosterone is gone.
