Had a burgundy one. 305 4spd. No air. No radio no nothing! Red interior. Very fast after some minor mods. 373 gears stock. Put true dual exhaust on it . $8267.74 out the door in February 1981. Great memories

I just bought an '81 Z28 with the 350. The smog stuff is gone, it came without air. Has full length headers, true 3" dual exhaust. It has an Edelbrock Performer EPS intake and a 750 Holley with vac secondaries. The thing runs like a Timex. I love it.

I know from personal experience (back in the late 80s) that a 427 big block from a 69 Corvette wakes an 81 Camaro right up.

Lol, I BELIEVE! My first job at 16, at a Parts Store and the quiet manager drives in a Blue ‘79-‘81 Blue Z28 outfitted with a L-88 spec 427, 4 Speed with 4:56. Obviously he could tell that he had my attention. After work he took me around the block. When people mention stories about a $Bill on the Dash and not being able to GET TO IT, this memory applies! Soon after I purchased a ‘78 Calais with a 305, factory Saginaw 4 Speed, installing a 396 on the 305 mounts, moving the shift tower back 4-5” for a M-21, also installing the 12 Bolt sourced from the same ‘69 SS396 Chevelle, which was slightly wider, backing plate to backing plate. THAT ONE RIDE had me chasing BB Chevys for years…

Hi Steve, up until the early ‘70s here in Australia we had no speed limit on the open road so our local muscle cars were made for high speed touring. Bear in mind that we had no highway system like the US - just rough country roads and many of them were badly corrugated gravel. We hit a big red kangaroo at 120 mph one night and destroyed the car. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must have been to be limited to 55mph particularly considering the cars you guys had at your disposal. Keep up the good work mate.

So yeah, it was pretty damn slow, even by 80s standards. My next car was a 87 Mustang LX with a 5.0, had a Hurst 5-speed, straight pipes with no catalytic convertor, THAT car was quick, even if it wasn't as pretty as the TA. Barf. Wasn’t a fan of the 80-81 Z’s. Didn’t like the hood treatment or the horizontal bars in the grill. Pass on the 305 as well. 1979 was the best year for the eurothane bumpered gen 2’s. Side note; the shaker hoods on 75 and later T/A’s were not fake. They were just blocked off. You could easily cut out the block off plate and have a functional shaker hood.
