1980: SHELLEY DUVALL on working with KUBRICK and ALTMAN | Film 80 | BBC Archive
Ойын-сауық
"It was so difficult being hysterical for that length of time".
Shelley Duvall spoke on Film 80 about her intense role in the film, The Shining and what it was like working with the meticulous, Stanley Kubrick. She also reflected on her work with the director Robert Altman and her forthcoming role in Popeye.
Clip taken from Film 80, originally broadcast on BBC One, 29 September 1980.
Note: Barry Norman erroneously states at the beginning of this clip that Time Bandits was directed by Terry Jones. It was actually directed by Terry Gilliam.

Sad to hear of Shelley's passing today. A wonderful actress.
Shelley Duvall seemed so kind hearted. I feel so sad to see her struggles in her later years.

The way she rolls her eyes, you can see why she'd be cast as a cartoon character. What a face. I love her.

She was a beautiful, sensitive soul. Such a generous performer - and as iconic as her performance is in The Shining, no one deserves to be treated like that..

You can see the minimal makeup and yet she had the high cheek bones, dimples and those big eyes. She was not a model from the magazines. But she was beautiful.

A rarity, a truly unique and exceptional talent. Love Shelley Duvall.
For me in my mind she will always be an Oscar winner for her incredible performance in The Shinning.
Casting Shelley Duvall as Olive Oil does indeed prove that Altman was a genius of casting. Maybe that's why he decided to push her into acting when he first saw her, and didn't want to explain why :)
Brilliant actress
The Shining are one of my all time favorite movies! Amazing interview!
Shelley Duvall was such a sweet lady. She was funny in her own unique way and her self-effacing nature had a real charm to it. Of course just like everyone else, It really pained me to see how she ended-up during the last 20 years of her life. She had a beautiful light that never really completely extinguished until she died so recently. She was 76 years old. I hope her passing was peaceful. I will always love her for the great work she did, especially on _The Shining._
REST IN PEACE, SHELLEY DUVALL ❤ ❤
A magical actress.... ❤
Wow, she was lovely! RIP Shelley.
She’s so charming❤ sorry to hear what you had to go through with Kuebrich and the shining but that movie turned out great and so were you.
So well-spoken and intelligent. Charming too. RIP
Very special person.
There are some very special movies which in their entirety only exist once. And often those works include some major participants which made that uniqueness. The Shining is one of those movies. I can imagine that even Jack Nicholson could had been substituted. But there could had not been any substitute for Shelley Duvall. That movie would had not been the same. Her fragile yet so caring character with a full presence and charisma could had never been equalled. And she so very much reminded me of my mother who most likely would had jumped in front of a lion if her child was in Danger. That I always felt with Shelly Duvall's portrayal of Wendy. And she fights so heartbreakingly for their Danny. The Shining is such a unique film to which there is no substitute. Let's say for instance if 48 Hours would not exist you still would have many other great Cop Movies like Beverly Hills Cop as an example. But there is no other "The Shining". Which accounts to all Movies of Stanley Kubrick I guess. I really need to see now another wonderful Walt Disney Real Actors Movie called "Popeye" which I had not seen yet. Also starring the wonderful Shelley Duvall.
I remember watching a documentary or reading something about Shelley Duvall and her experience with Stanley Kubrick and she cried on set and wasn't happy with Kubrick's quest for perfection. I vaguely remember Kubrick being rather curt with her and she didn't like that. Working with him she stated made her more robust and she learnt from it. Although seeing the state of her on Dr. Phil a few years ago, she didn't seem to be physically and mentally in a good place. I'm guessing that Hollywood like most places just chews up people and spits them out and it doesn't do nothing good for them.

It was Terry Gilliam who directed "The Time Bandits", not Terry Jones. Not like Bazza to make an error like that, but easy enough to make. Is it just me or does this interview feel very awkwardly cut together? It's like neither Duvall or Norman were in the same room together... "No one is as awkward as you." Cut to a shot of Barry awkwardly reacting. 😂

Probably shot with one camera, with the shots from the back and nodding dog shots filmed at the end then cut together. Pretty typical for location tv interviews at the time.

According to Sir Michael Palin's diaries, he filmed his scenes with Shelley Duvall on 24th June 1980 and Time Bandits was released on 2nd July 1981. If this episode of Film 80 was broadcast on 29th September 1980, in the middle of these two dates, perhaps Barry was given some misinformation about the director, hence the rare cockup about a film he hadn't seen yet? 🤔
Seems she really appreciated Kubrick and The Shining experience. That documentary really blows it all out of proportion.
R.I.P.
She was so versatile, her part as Zippy in Rainbow was overwhelming in it's depth, emotion, and charisma.
🧡
I don't know whether she did something to rub Kubrick up the wrong way but he did come across as being a bit of jerk in the behind the scenes footage of The Shining

If she just said, "Yeah it was difficult," then I would think maybe it wasn't so bad. But she's afraid to even throw out a ballpark number for how many takes it was. Kubrick was pretty awful to her, and there are videos of the making of The Shining showing that.
Barry was class and Shelley was classier. Loved them both.
Kubrick was insane!!!! Literally..
She seems so warm and nice. It would be so cool to have known her. RIP Shelly! I first saw her in the Shining since I'm a big fan of paranormal horror and she knocked it out of the ballpark in that role.
"I am very pleased to have done it (The Shining) because I've learned more on that picture and strengthened myself....." contrary to all the rumours of her being "tortured" by Kubrick.

I'm really shocked when I knew about her death, I truly sorry for all she got through and all Kubrick tortured her over the shooting of The Shining, however now it's different as the impact of social media, it's hard to unfake chemistry with someone on a set. So, probably Stanley Kubrick would be cancelled today. R.I.P. Shelley.

she looks like she could be in her early 20s but she’s actually in her early 30s
1:05 Notice her mismatching eyelids? This is why she hid them under tons of makeup, Even going so far, as to heavily make-up her eyes to be the main 'feature', of her overall appearance. Once noticed... hard to forget.
Mia Goth is the Shelly Duvall of today. Very similar lookz
Stanley is unmatched
Another interview that shows she did not have a terrible time making The Shining. It was hard work but she was glad she did it.
She was cute.
118 takes? Film must've been cheap back then. This day and age real 35mm movie film is about $700-$800 for a reel that only holds several minutes of footage.

Kubrick tortured her. Any other job he would have been charged with a crime. She was put through horrible working conditions she still suffers from today

@@kubricksmith Thank you! Frustrating that "caring" fans perpetuate these negative narratives.
She seemed so sweet and so beautiful, the camera loved her. Sometimes we end up in working conditions that are misogynistic and disrespectful and back in 1979, shooting The Shining, , women were paid so much less than men counterparts although some might argue today that the pay equality hasn't changed much. Kubrick was a jerk if he really mistreated Ms. Duvall. Shame on him. And his last movie, Eyes Wide Shut, was garbage. Egotistical jerk.
She is gracious but Kubrick, in actuality, was very cruel to Shelley. Another Director who could be cruel to his actors was Otto Preminger. I admire some of their films but that does not excuse cruelty.
She was beautiful.
