$100,000 Quaker State Open
Forum Bowling Lanes, Grand Prairie, Texas, Jan 23-27, 1979
Holman Evens Score
Defeated in the 1978 Quaker State championship by just three pins, Marshall Holman turned the tables on defending champ Mark Roth, upending the top-seeded Roth, 217-186, for the $15,000 first prize at Forum Lanes in Grand Prairie, Texas.
The Quaker State title was Holman's eighth PBA crown and came after Marshall doubled in the 10th frame of the exciting semi-final game to edge veteran Dave Soutar, 230-224, after Soutar had forced the issue with four game-ending strikes.
Soutar had earlier defeated Joe Berardi and Dick Ritger.

Wonder how many pro's back then were using Columbia 300 "Yellow-Dot "Bleeders"? Back then they were the holy grail in my circles.
I met Mark Roth at rainbow lanes on Emmons Ave., Sheepshead bay Brooklyn, New York Which he owned . I was sitting in the restaurant, having a burger and fries when he walked in and I said hello asked him how his finger was? Nice guy will miss him

Roth always came across as a bit boorish and of few words.....on the lanes. But off he seemed like a genuine nice guy. Seeing him towards the end of his life at bowling tournaments, he always has a huge smile and was always laughing and was in his element.. He bowled so violent. Stomping to the line and just ripping the ball...Roth changed the game. Not many athletes can make that claim

@@beeemm2578 I always found Mark to be the most interesting to watch bowler of all time. The way he approached the line and hooked the ball was unlike any other bowler. He took six steps and sometimes snuck in a seventh step. His footwork was rushed, and his backswing was high . A recipe for malfunction but executed it with a powerful release. Some say he had the most revolutions of any bowler. He holds the record to this day as the only right hand on a PGA tour to execute the 7/10 split and in fact he was the first one the only one . Mr. Roth a true icon in the sport of bowling added more to the game of bowling than any of the bowler. I’ll never forget the interview Mark Roth had with Sports Illustrated when Sports Illustrated asked him about his bowling style. His response was I wanted to release the ball like a rocket . He certainly did and millions will forever be grateful to have watched him and it will always be in my memory the day I met Mark Roth, in the luncheonette at rainbow lanes. Brooklyn, New York . Mark Roth will always live in my memory walking over to me and smiling. Mark Roth, the powerhouse bowler And the most exciting PGA bowler ever to play the sport.
Mark Roth: Titles (34) , Runner-Up (27), TV Finals (124), Majors (1) Marshall Holman: Titles (22), Runner-Up (31), TV Finals (116), Majors (4) Dick Ritger: Tiitles (20), Runner-Up (8), TV Finals (56), Majors (0) Dave Soutar: Titles (18), Runner-Up (13), TV Finals (72), Majors (2) Joe Berardi: Titles (10), Runner-Up (6), TV Finals (38), Majors (2) 104 PBA Titles, 85 Runner-Ups, 406 TV finals, 9 Majors in this particular field 👍

I still have my Blue Dot. Cant seem to get it to curve and set like Marshall did!
This was right around I first bowled as an 11 year old. Our class went on a field trip to a bowling alley in Casper, Wyoming. I was hooked on bowling after the first game, which was only a 45 after getting a strike on my first ever ball.

These Brunswick masking units are my favorite from my traveling team days and remind me of how fond I was of the houses that had them. Along with the slightly subdued lighting that often went with them, they gave a bowling alley a presence far above the cheap junk they have now. I doubt that any of them still exist and more’s the pity. I don’t think most people realize or understand how aesthetics are important in everyday life but once you look it’s easy to see how simple things like fonts, logos and graphics can so greatly affect a consumer’s choice in a store and a shopping experience. My favorite stop on our league’s schedule was at a house with these masking units plus off-white seating and ball racks, terrazzo flooring in the settee areas, focused lighting and cut loop purple carpeting with gold colored Brunswick crowns woven in. People dressed nicer, the talk was more genteel, the food in the restaurant was better than the usual bowling alley fare and it seemed to me like the camaraderie of the league was elevated at this stop, and all because of the appointments and aesthetics. Even if your team got their butt kicked in a place like this they came out feeling good, like you do when leaving a ball game or church. I have to wonder if the league averages were higher in these houses. Maybe if kids today had experiences like these life wouldn’t be so crude and frantic and some sense of civility would return. As far as the house in this video goes, the chandeliers are a bit too much but the rest shows what I’m talking about. And talk about the bowlers! Close to the very cream of the crop.

It's called the Brunswick Starshield. It was my favorite as well.
All five bowlers competing in the 1979 Quaker State Open are all hall of famers.
This has to be one of the best finalist groups I've seen....

I just watched a tournament from 77,I think, and Holman had like 3 titles and Roth had like 4 or 5.Its amazing to see how much they both dominated in 78 and 79,especially Roth.

I think Roth won about 7 or 8 in 78, Holman had a lot of hard luck losses and never dominated like Mark
Lifetime, Roth was 34-27 in championship matches. Lifetime, Holman was 22-31 in championship matches.

It'll return someday. These things are cyclic.
Unusual to see Roth and Holman on the ditch. I wonder if Berardi ever threw the ball outside second arrow.
Duuuude how do you get the audio un-synched on a VHS tape? Real annoying on that last match.
I don't think the ski jumping is what we remember about the 1980 Winter Olympics.
I think when reactive resin came in during the 90s it ruined bowling. Scores went through the roof. Now a 300 doesn't even mean anything.

If basically made 'accuracy' the size of a barn, as opposed to pin point. Just get it close...the ball with bail out any minor discrepancies.
The bowling balls they're using would be house balls today....😆
Audio is slightly out of sync for the championship match.

back around 1980 golf tournaments paid around 60k for first, this paid 15k. just think if bowling went up the same as golf, first would pay about 250k. sad where the state of the pba is right now....... ;(
