I always liked Volares and Aspens since they came out for 76. The 70s colors were great. These days you have 50 shades of grey. Enjoyed seeing this car .

Chris.....try getting beans to approve a 3 car deal.... Volare', Aspen, Kit Car....that was ALL the parts....Available to dealer or over counter, for Y O U to assemble at home/shop. For short track spec Street Stock class racing. ...ALL I. . .want, is a set of THE wheels...NOT a new " set of wheels "...So, THEY did. Super Coupe Aspen Super Coupe Volare' Kit Car... kit. Petty graphics, in a tagged MOPAR part # bag. So beans said Yes. But limited paint choice, not by customers...by designers at THAT beans meeting. Can of root beer in law of DODGE white hat guy. Low-ball Vodka Cranberry tonic in Plymouth's hand. PETTY, not in on that deal. But I heard he reccomended S T P for the standard issue Cop HP code 360. HE drank that stuff like water. In his veins. omg wow...what a blast from the past. I was a 17 year old lot boy at Aurora Chrysler Plymouth in Seattle in 1978 and 1979, and we had 1 or 2 360 4barrel Super Coupes and 1 also of my favorite, a RoadRunner with a 360 2barrel and a 4 speed. Even at the time and my young age, I was aware that these were going to be the last of their kind, never to be seen again, until today! dude sounds mean. originally the lean burn was to avoid a cat, but at the end, and prob on this car, they had both. Thx Ted and Lou for showing this unusual and memorable car!

I was in the 11th grade in 1978. I wanted a Dodge Aspen super coupe, or a Plymouth Volare super coupe. In 1980 I found a 73 Plymouth Cuda 340 pistol grip, Hurst shifter four-speed the motor had been abused. The car looked in good condition. It was a silvery gray color with a black vinyl top and black interior. My dad had a low mileage 1969 Chrysler 300 with a 440 ci he help me swap the 340 and install the big block 440 and I found a big block bell housing for the transmission that car was quick it would smoke the tires in three gears. and chirp the tires in fourth gear that 440 was a beast.

I have a Dodge Aspen coupe a 1979 model my first new car right three years out of high school. It has just under ten thousand miles on it. Mine is a 318 Special Edition has the opera windows. It is Eggshell white with a dark red half roof. I know Dodge had super Coupe too in 1978 or 1979. My coupe has every option except power windows and door locks and seats. I love these F body cars. The 1978 and 1979 model years they had inner fender panels to help with the front fender rot that riddle these cars in the earlier years. I just love love love this car! I wish I could have ordered one that year but i bought my Aspen in November 1979 and the 1980's were coming out and mine was a leftover 1979. My Dodge came with the AM Radio with stereo 8 track but I had it replaced with a factory AM FM 8 track radio. I just love this car so much I had goosebumps when I saw this on your page. My Dodge was Made in Hamtramack Michigan and that plant has since been closed and torn down. My Dodge window stick is 7,265.00. I have a feeling this Super Coupe was made in Newark, New Jersey as that was where they were producing the Volare line at that time. I just again love this car sooooo much! The owner is so neat too! I like he loves these F body cars. Nothing like a awesome Volare and Aspen Lou!!! Thanks for sharing this special unit with us!!!!

I have a 1979 Aspen R/T with the same drive train as the Super Coupe 360 4 bbl 3 speed 727 8 1/4 suregrip. It kept all its original parts pretty much when I found it in the mid 90s except for the smog pump was removed and the lean burn had been bypassed and repainted its factory color at one point, sable tan sunfire metallic painted black bumpers/door handles/window trim/antenna and missing its original graphics. It had a factory dual exhaust but merged together near the exit(kind of weird I thought). It even still had the factory battery cover and the original trunk carpet/spare tire cover and the plastic cover that goes over the tail lights wiring! You have a very nice mint Super Coupe there I enjoyed the video!

These cars were OK, I guess. Chrysler did what they could under the circumstances of the late '70's. The dress up items helped in appearances but they were still Volares.😄 My grandmother had a '78 Aspen with the 225 six. The dash layout for both is identical. We had it for about a year after she passed in '88. Still ran like new when we sold it.

@@opera93 It was the same way with my grandmother's car, which was red on red. I'm not sure how it was optioned. It had power steering and brakes and I think a/c and a rear window defroster but that's probably it. Even at 10 years old, it was very tight and responsive and drove like new. She took care of it.

Funny thing is, he bought his to save money from his 340 Demon that got about 8MPG due to all his performance work his was brown with the matte black hood, roof, and trunk lid. He conned me into Armor All the matt black..... It takes an hour to do it right and then wax the "normal" paint. These cars were a pain in the ass to detail. And, yea, it was a slug compared to the Demon! Bob Segar, Night Moves, sums up the time! So nice to see one again!!!! Even if it does remind me of all the money my brother still owes for my 12 year old kid labor he exploited...... With interest and penalties..... Interesting car. I don't recall ever seeing one then or now. It's amazing how, within 10 years, muscle car design went from a clean no-nonsense look to a sort-of "Hot-Wheels" toy look. I guess by then they knew that the older muscle enthusiasts gave up on owning them and the new buyers were college kids who just wanted some power and a lot of flash. It was enjoyable to see this rare car and Kudos to the owner to preserve it so well.

The tag lets you brag: H for Volare, L for low price class, 29 for two door special coupe, L for 360 V8, 8 for 1978 model year, B for Hamtramck, MI assembly and the rest is the production sequence. The Hamtramck, MI plant was called "Factory Zero" or "Dodge Main" and operated from 1911 to 1980. GM eventually opened up Hamtramck, MI assembly on part of that site after a group of citizens opposed city officials from demolishing houses, churches and stores in the area to make way for the new plant. Dodge Main had an area called "The Playpen" where employees could tinker and fabricate their own stuff after hours. It also had a medical ward, several cafeterias and its own fire department which was online with the Hamtramck, MI fire department as well. Some codes: U for USA spec vehicle, E58 for 360 V8, RR9 for Crimson Metallic exterior paint, 505 should be May 5, 1978 production which was a Friday, among other codes.

@@loucostabile Lou...I found one yesterday. My Mom gave me the DODGE brochure for my '77 birthday in August. As an earlier Aspen wagon owner/ financed, Chrysler sent out early printed for "Preferred Customers"...started actually selling them in September 77. Less than 500. A car model you can find out Exactly from Chrysler Historical Society. Thks for showing these off. Aspen model is Exactly same...in Brown. This Volare' version only in this red. I do not know if 500 is total of the 2. But I will find out ASAP.

Okay - between you and me (seeing how private KZread comments are) I would marry this car in a heartbeat if it weren't for the fact that I'd be cheating on the half dozen cars or so I already married. Deud! And the 8-Track still works! How sweet a deal is that!? Loving the color scheme, exterior, interior, clean as a whistle engine and engine bay - loving the health outta them wheels maaaan! Yeah! She's hawt! Massive Thumbs Up Assault!! Thanx for bringing in another legendary ride, Lou!

Cool car! Surprised it is in such good shape for a NY car....these cars had a bad reputation for rust and that's why you don't see many around. I had a '77 Volare with a 318 and a 4 speed on the floor with overdrive. It was a great car. It got 26 MPG on trips and was very dependable. I had the magnum 500 rims and it looked pretty sharp.

In '92, I BRIEFLY owned a '78 Dodge Aspen "Super Coupe"! Winter in Minnesota, A BEATEN SMOKEY, STEAMING car (I bought for $150!) I JUNKED IT! I found out later, from my buddy (who towed it over-the-scale) THAT I SCRAPPED A TRANSPLANTED "340"!

I had that same rear window louver, I looked to see who made them it had no company name no numbers nothing. Unfortunately it blew off when I was driving my Aspen over a hundred miles an hour and lost on the freeway! ☹ Nice Super Coupe by the way! 👍

Oh my god ! I had a 78 Volare . Burgandy and silver with a 318 . Burgandy interior as well . Unfortunately it was not a good car for me . The motor would die out all the time . This Super Coupe is very cool however. Thanks for sharing.

I turned 16 in 1977. My Chrysler employed dad helping make 318 engines already had a medium blue Volare station wagon with a 318 engine. Grandma bought a slant 6 cyl engine coupe a year or two later. It's hard to see it at first as a Sports car. 318 engines could perform decently but the ones we had at that time would threaten to stall from a startup at a traffic signal. I Never figured out why. To those who like the Aspen/Volare coupes as Sports cars, well, more power to you. It would have been nice to see Chrysler make a Sports instrument panel with a built-in tachometer.
