    Merlin Olsen. With Deacon Jones were they a hand full on the field & with Dick Enberg perhaps the finest duo covering NFL games. Merlin didn't mince words or hold back. Dick was smooth as silk. Just enjoyed their covering a game. No homer or diva here. Just two class acts.

    Back then these 2 Franchises were polar opposites of the teams they re today. The Cowboys were perineal contenders while the Pats, while extremely talented, always seem to come up short. No greater example than this game. Back then, the Cowboys were coached by the great Tom Landry, while the Pats, especially after the departure of Chuck Fairbanks, often found away to beat themselves. Today, its the Pats that have the NFL's greatest coach who has the team so well prepared, they almost, always find a win! In Dallas, you have an egotistic owner who seems to get in the way of having a good strong coach!

    @@mcdonoghrahloh459 Yes. They have never earned even one of their many victories simply through thorough preparation, excellent play calling, or superb play at many positions, notably quarterback. Both "deflategate" and "videogate" account for all of their hundreds of victories these past two decades. Players who come to the Patriots from other teams can testify that their system and level of preparation are in fact no better than those of any other NFL club. You nailed it!

    This was a HUGE doubleheader Sunday for NBC(maybe one of the best ever). You had this game which was advertised as a POTENTIAL Super Bowl Preview as each team was leading there division at the time. In the late time slot you also had Pittsburgh/Houston which was a key game in the AFC Central and you also had Cleveland/Seattle in what was a basically a playoff eliminator(neither team made the playoffs though)In the early time slot the feature game was Miami/Washington who each had winning records at the time.

    My Dad and I were at that game. I remember the raucous crowd never had any doubt the Boys would win. All these years later, what strikes me now is how the players were so into the game and their teammates, unlike today, where so many players are only into themselves.

  • @comfortat

    @comfortat

    Жыл бұрын

    They were only "inferior" because they gave the AFL Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Baltimore. The Steelers and Colts won 5 SBs from 1970-1979. Dallas lost 3 of them by a total of 11 points! A freak play and a fumble on the goal line cost them the Cots game. The Steelers were a better team in 1975, but only won 21-17. The worst PI in the history of the SB and a dropped TD pass to Jackie Smith cost them the rematch 35-31. I'm not making excuses, simply saying that those games by decided by a few, critical plays. In the other 7: Minnesota lost 3 of them, and did not play well offensively against 3 of the greatest teams of all time (thanks Tarkenchoke), Washington lost by 7, the Rams were ahead after 3 quarters, and Dallas won the other 2. That's 7 of the 10 SBs being very competitive, and 5 of the teams being former NFL teams. It wasn't like the 1980-1995 run when Oakland won 2, the Bills lost by a point, and the Bengals were close twice. The other 10 were beat down blowouts.The AFC was inferior in that era. Whatever you're smoking, you need to stop. Peace

    Russ Francis was the best TE in football. But Hollywood Henderson kicked his but in this game. First play of the game Hollywood gave him a forearm shiver to the face & broke his nose. All week Skip Bayless said Francis was gonna have a great game against Henderson. Hollywood was so fired up for this game that he didn’t touch any cocaine all week. After this game Bayless wrote an article apologizing to Hollywood and praising his great performance. In ‘77 & ‘78 Henderson was one of the best linebackers in football.

    Teams such as the Cowboys, the Vikings & the Steelers in the 1970s had a low turnover as many of those guys played much or all of their careers with one team. Free agency didn't decimate teams like it does now. That & many of those guys had a sense of loyalty to their teams so they didn't jump ship for a few dollars more.

    not much has changed in today's game...in pro football if you don't make smart, timely decisions in the draft that address your weaknesses you don't have a chance of winning..free agency in football hasn't changed the game as dramatically as it has in the NBA, in which the players have hijacked the league, and to a lesser degree MLB....the NFL brand is bigger than the individual player...

    What nice uniforms the Patriots once had. Now everybody wants to look like the stupid USFL. This particular game was considered a possible Superbowl XIII preview. I remember earlier in the season the Patriots were leading the Oilers 23/0, the Oilers who would challenge the Steelers for the AFC championship, won 26/23 overtime. The Oilers would crush the Pats 34/14 in the divisional playoffs after that Jack Ass Fairbanks announced he wanted to coach the Colorado Buffalos. How exciting!

  • @paulsonj72

    @paulsonj72

    4 жыл бұрын

    I think Fairbanks wanted to get away from the Sullivan's. The previous year they forced him to renege on new contracts for two of his key players. The Sullivan's were known for being cheap. But then again Fairbanks wasn't warm and fuzzy. When Darryl Stingley was paralyzed that summer a low level staffer was the only one left behind by the Patriots. John Madden visited Stingley more than anybody from the Patriots did. It is rumored that the Stingley injury played a small part in Madden quitting coaching after the 1978 season

    HOWWW New England could ever have let Chuck Fairbanks get away to coach the Colorado Buffaloes, before the season even ended, is BEYOND me!!... I think the Sullivan family ended up screwing Fairbanks & they didn't truly appreciate the winning coach they had - my impression... The way they won & with the success Fairbanks had drafting and getting the most out of guys, GOTTA keep a coach like that long-term!!

    Fairbanks left after the Sullivan's screwed over Daryl Stingley! The Sullivan's and Stingley had a handshake deal for a Contract Extension, and after Stingley was paralyzed after the Tatum hit, they re-neged. Back then the Pats didn't have the leagues best owner, but arguably the worst!

  • @davidlafleche1142

    @davidlafleche1142

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@cary737 No, Sullivan didn't do that. Fairbanks' issue was that he had two excellent guards: John Hannah and Leon Gray. Fairbanks signed them to new contracts in 1977, but Sullivan voided the contracts, and demanded renegotiating lower salaries. This caused a huge disruption in the team, and they badly underachieved in 1977. Fairbanks argued that ownership should expect to spend some real money on a real contender, but Sullivan played it cheap at the worst time. Fairbanks decided then and there to start looking for a new job. It's a shame, too, because Fairbanks had two of the best drafts in NFL history: 1973 and 1976.

    @@davidlafleche1142 Maybe you're right? However, IIRC, ( and I read a book and I don't remember which one), which stated that Fairbanks was so incensed by what the Sullivans did in respect to Stingley, that he was vowed to leave and thats why he left for Colorado. I was a young teenager back in 1978, so i only remember him leaving. I t was years later that I read about this. I do remember Sullivan low balling both Hannah and Gray, so that probably contributed to it too. Maybe what happened was the last straw?
