1978 NFC Playoff - Falcons at Cowboys - Enhanced CBS Broadcast - 1080p/60fps

I've enhanced the 1978 Falcons at Cowboys NFC Divisional Playoff. I used Topaz Video AI to upscale the picture to 1080p, double the framerate to 59.94, denoise, and sharpen. I then used Da Vinci Resolve to adjust contrast and to color-grade the picture. See before/after screenshots here -- imgbox.com/g/g9BgDCEIuM

Game time temperature: 32 degrees. Two days later and about 12 miles east, the Cotton Bowl was played in an ice storm and 20-degree temperatures. Joe Montana drank chicken soup to overcome hypothermia, and led Notre Dame from a 34-12 deficit to a 35-34 win over Houston.

Remember this game well and how COLD it was in Irving that day. Really felt like it was in the 20s. This is real top quality work by Dave, you could see the shine on the helmets well, the green of the turf (and the splotches on it as well, either from wear and tear or the wetness) Always loved that Dallas deep shotgun. The ball was snapped and Staubach had already moved his right foot back and was in the process of moving the left one as well to be ready to throw as quickly as possible. So many other shotgun operating qbs would take the snap flatfooted and then start setting up to throw...Staubach was doing it while the ball was coming too him Duel in Dixie gets the hype but this was a quality game in itself

I miss the ol' red Falcon jerseys.. Jerry Glanville basically screwed up their traditional color scheme. Back in the 80s & early 90s teams were converting to blacked-out uniforms, so they could sell more Starter jackets to gangbangers (& wanna-bes). Glanville was on the cutting edge of that trend.

I remember watching this game as a kid on TV at my grandparents' house. For those of us who grew up watching the NFL in the 1970's, it was super cool to see the Falcons in a playoff game. They had never been in a playoff game in their entire existence, and aside from a couple of so-so years, they had been terrible for most of it. The 70's in the NFC was the have's and the have nots for most of the decade. The Falcons and Saints had never been in the playoffs ever, the Giants and Eagles hadn't been in the playoffs since the early 60's (and were horrible for most of that stretch). The Bears ('77), Lions ('70), and Packers ('72) only went once in the 70's heading into 1978, and the 49ers hadn't had a sniff of them since '72. The Vikings and Rams won their divisions easily year after year, and the Cowboys usually won the NFC East while the Cardinals and Redskins would sometimes win the division and usually had decent teams to challenge. The year before this game, the Bears and the great Walter Payton had won the wildcard for their first playoff appearance in 14 years and went to Dallas and got destroyed 37-7, but the Falcons went into Dallas and really held their own, being physical and taking it to Dallas, almost winning the game. It wouldn't be long before the Eagles, Giants, and 49ers became powerhouses again, and the 6 year reign of Dallas/Minnesota as NFC champs saw 1978 as their final crown for a LONG time. The Cowboys wouldn't win the NFC until the great "92/'93/'95 teams, and haven't won again since, and the Vikings haven't won the NFC since 1976, almost 50 years ago.

I have been watching nfl football since 1970 when my parents stopped taking me to church on Sundays. It’s amazing to me how dramatically the game has changed over time. The huge pads they had to wear, the loose uniforms, and how damn slow the players seemed in these old games. The plays are not as complex, and when players got knocked out they just got up and continued playing. The passing game was pretty basic too, because the timing was not as critical. Today, the plays are super complex, defenses are as well, and the players are so incredibly fast. QBs are much more athletic. And timing coupled with complex routes are key. Despite these differences, the game back then was just as entertaining.

Tom Brookshier was/is such an underrated football announcer. All his little quips and bits of terminology, slang, colorful and concise statements after each play make watching the game FUN! Today you get loud, screaming technical analysis of each move on the field like they're coaches and we're players. And he and others didn't talk about the star players like they were demigods sent down to grace us poor peons with their presence. Just, "Boy, he can sure fire a ball, can't he?" "Yes he can!" then carry on with the play by play.

Lehman Bennetts Falcons were always tough on defense during his time in Atlanta. In 1977 when they allowed the least points in the league they finished 7-7. Had they had any offense they surely would of won more games. My biggest memory of a Dallas and Falcons match was the 1980 playoff game where Dallas trailed by 13, and Danny White led a tremendous comeback to break Falcons fans hearts.

See how Ditka ran down to jump on him. pro football reference shows no receptions during the season. 3 receptions in this game and nothing else. So why was he there? Wikipedia says only for blocking in goal-line.

Gorgeous presentation. One interesting thing, and it really stands out in this game, is the variance in color depending on which angle is being shown. When the primary camera angle is used, the Cowboys' end zones look accurate. On the overhead shots, the end zones are paler. I think color control has become more uniform in the 45 years since the game was played, and you don't see that so much anymore. This game has always been one of my lesser favorites, because Roger got KO'ed and didn't finish. Still, it was exciting to see Danny White lead his first great comeback for the Cowboys, especially in such an important game. Another really fine piece of work, Dave!

Thanks George - I've definitely noticed the different color/contrast depending on the angle in many of these games I've enhanced. You really have to take that into account when trying to find an overall color grade/contrast adjustment.

I wonder if there's as much variance on old NBC broadcasts. They always had better cameras than CBS back then. NBC had the better video, and CBS had the better audio.

@@GeorgeDamon Not too many NBC games were preserved in the 70's-1980 by folks with home VCR/BETA machines. A strange anomaly, but the CBS telecast far outnumber the NBC games.

  • @GeorgeDamon

    @GeorgeDamon

    10 ай бұрын

Yes, I've noticed the same thing over the years, and it's strange, for a couple of reasons. First, while I understand the outsized popularity of the Cowboys during the '70s (most of whose games were aired on CBS), the AFC had several teams that were also very popular. It's surprising to me how few (relatively speaking) Steelers, Raiders, and Dolphins games have survived. I don't know whether it's because I'm a Cowboys fan and I have more awareness of their games or if it's actually true, but it seems to me that the number of surviving Cowboys games far surpasses those of the AFC's "Big 3" from the same era. Second, as I said in my earlier post, NBC's visual presentation was superior to CBS's. Their cameras were simply better, and they gave the broadcasts a smooth look as opposed to CBS's (and ABC's) grittier look. You'd think that NBC's games would have been highly desirable as telecasts worth keeping. It's a good thing that so many (again, relatively speaking) MNF games have survived, because in some cases those are the only ones that feature teams whose games didn't get preserved much, if at all, on other network broadcasts.

@@GeorgeDamon The legacy of NBC tossing out videos is legendary in some circles. The first several years of videos for The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson were tossed, as legend has it, an NBC executive wanted to free-up storage space and ordered the tapes discarded of those shows to free up shelf space. Little of Carson's early years on The Tonight Show survived, as either a few pirated tapes [prior to the master reels being tossed] or kinescopes did survive. When Carson Productions got the rights to The Tonight Show with NBC, the surviving videos were kept and are being stored in underground vaults.

Dave, there's only so much you can do with videotape & you do a great job cleaning it up. Imagine if NFL Films had put together complete games using film? I'm sure they have plenty of film footage still in the NFL Films vault out there on Steve Sabol Drive in NJ.

  • @davevolskysbackdoor5673

Thanks Scotty. NFL Films did do that with a handful of games some years ago with their 'Greatest Games' series, but that isn't even a drop in the bucket. I know they have thousands upon thousands of film cannisters from years prior, as Ed Sabol told his cameramen to shoot games and let the film run like water. It's unfortunate that the GOTW program for this particular game had a horrible transfer - dark and almost devoid of color.

A game of two very different halves. And one I don't recall and as a Dallas fan of over a decade at the time I cannot think of a reason I don't recall it. Little did Robert Pennywell realize his vicious hit on Roger Staubach just before halftime was the end of the Falcons season. If Roger stays in and continues to be ineffective IMO Landry doesn't yank him for Danny White until it was too late. I found it very irritating that the Broncos loss to the Steelers and the upcoming Minnesota at LA game was talked up but the Houston at New England game only got one quick mention. I would have expected rookie running back sensation Earl Campbell to have received at least some recognition.

Before RPO, Sub Unit schemes, West Coast Offenses of utilizing everyone on offense ( except the Line men) of various designed plays, it was just 11 starters with 40 second play clock for players to rest up before playing next play. 2nd String was 2nd string and only came out to rest starters or replace from injuries. The game was more PERSONAL for the starters, more physical due to going harder in practices to get better. Fans had a better sense of how physical each play was and lived of this vibe of wondering who would be the next player hurt off opposing teams like QBs, and stretchers were very common of every game in NFL.

On that last play which was a QB sack on 4th down there was 2 seconds on the clock. The Atlanta falcons should've got the ball at midfield where they could've gotten a hail Mary which would've tied the game thus forcing overtime. I'm surprised the Falcons didn't protest that ruling since that sack occurred with 2 seconds left.
