1972: KNUR AND SPELL - The KING of sports | Nationwide | Classic BBC Sport | BBC Archive
Ойын-сауық
It starts as it means to go on; with a good old argument.
James Hogg visits the Greetland moors, home of the 1972 Knur and Spell World Championships. Knur and Spell is an honourable sport played only in Yorkshire and Lancashire that involves plenty of skill and even more complaining. It has been disparagingly referred to (though not by anyone at BBC Archive) as "poor man's golf".
Can Greetland's own mighty Selwyn Schofield defend his world title? Or will some young upstart from the Barnsley or Colne contingent walk away with the title, the glory and that coveted silver cup?
Well, you don't get this on ESPN or Sky Sports. Not yet, anyhow.
This clip is from Nationwide, originally broadcast 4 October, 1972.

This might be the greatest channel on youtube.
Fetch this game back boys Yorkshire all the way
Proper dry humour up north there. Even the ref trying to hide his wry smile at the end there

Yorkies don't have a sense of humour.
Don't remember this on Out Of Town.....🏴🥃🇬🇧🥃🏴
@9:21 that reaction :D
£200 in 1972, that would have bought a terrace house in most mining villages.
This just seems to be an excuse for an argument and I love it. The guy from Barnsley with the stash looks like a thug from Minder.
This is from 1972 the way their dressed. Thanks for sharing this video BBC 👍🙂📸
So chaotic not surprise its extinct unqualified intruder ..no longer played anywhere RIP to the game and old timeres
Fred Trueman at 3:13?
Seems like a argument competition
In Poland there is only one Knur and his name is kononowicz
Oooh I tell thee
did he miss it ? classic
I thought this was Monty Python!
I played "Hornussen" in Switzerland and there are similarities. Big difference is we play in teams and the defending team gets "shot at". The arguing ist very similar though... kzread.info/dash/bejne/eZh9qrGPZrmtfrg.htmlsi=J6ldhSfeH97G2tDQ
This is kinda similar to the Swiss sport of Hornussen.
Piss Up In A Brewery.
Absolutely should be in the Olympics, given it's more of a sport than some of the crap that gets accepted.
Was that Fred Truman giving the prize at the end?
The sly middle finger at 2:55...lol
59 he was only 59 😂
6:23 I agree it does the poorly organize me who cares if you touch the sling what matters as how far you hit it the same thing with the peg the guy didn't remove the peg from the ground why should he be disqualified neither 1 of these guys should be disqualified

9:00 Tell this guy to keep his mouth shut they are not interfering him they're interviewing the winner
Piggy on serious drugs
For a country that invented the English language, no one seems to speak it. Also how can you be a world champion when no one plays the game

The Yorkshire accent is just about the oldest accent in the UK, its regional vocabulary still uses words from its Viking and Celt roots.
They were all hit with The Ugly Stick beforehand. This is the BBC laughing at the plebs and rightly so.
