Ower Bit Bog Oil - Knur and Spell / Tipping

Спорт

This is an entertaining film made by keen Yorkshire filmmaker Eric Hall about the local game of Knurl and Spell. It features many aspects of the game and has an accompanying commentary in a Yorkshire dialect.

Seriously we need more stuff like this. I only hear farmers speak like this now, Yorkshire accent is dying out

Knurl and spell; probably the most brilliantly inefficient game ever invented. Time hitting the ball (Knurl): One person 0.5 of a second (0.00094 man hours) Time finding small white ball in sheep field: 15 people 5 minutes (1 ¼ man hours) Wonderful

Commentaator: Cowlin's 'awf waay between Keighley an' Skipton. It's nobbut a little Yorkshire village an' A don't suppose ya knaw much abaht it. A bet tha didn't knaw that reight honourable Philip Snawdon t'fu'st chancellor o t'exchequer wer born i Cowlin, Well 'e wor, 'eeare i this varry 'ouse. Tha knaws 'is job wer laaikin abaht with uther fowk's brass, an' fowk are still laaikin abaht wi brass 'eeare i Cowlin: neearly ivvery wickend t'locals goo' aht laaikin knur an' spell, up 'eeare we cawl it "tippin". It's a sooart o poor man's golf bud tha wun't cawl it poor if tha saw t'brass swappin 'ands when t'match is ower. Fowk 'ave bin tippin fer ower 'undred yeear an' todaay some o t'young-uns are keean as mustard. It's summat lahke golf wiaht any 'oiles to knock yer bawl into. Tha belts a reight 'ahrd little pot bawl cawlled a knur as fahr as tha can wi a long stick, summat lahke a golf tlub wi t''eead streightened aht instead o bein bent ower. Tipper 'oo' 'its it t'fahrest is t'winner, but let's go back to t'stahrt. Fu'st of awl, tha draw fer plaaces, like tha do in a fishin match. 'e's mahrkin aht wheear each tip is bahn to stand. Then tha fix this ahrticle up, wun fer each tipper. Some on em 'eve a spirrit lever on t'cross piece, an' on t'end o t'cross piece a lump o band 'ings dahn wi a loop at t'end to put t'knur in (Joe's putten 'is best tlogs on fer t'job.). If ther's a wind blawin, tha stop t'knur fra swingin abaht wi a piece o thin weft fastened to t'bottom o t'loop an' t'tuther end 'eld dahn wi a stone. Ivvery tipper mahrks aht wheear 'e's bahnt to stand when 'e's tippin, 'e does this wi a piece o band pegged aht i a trahängle. T'reight foot 'ahrdly ivver moves, that pegs goes at t'back of 'is 'eeal an' later on tha'll see 'e puts two more pegs in at t'side soo' 'e can awlus put 'is fooit i t'same place every time 'e strikes. 'e's bashin t'grahnd to mack it flat. Sitha, 'e's purrin them uther two pegs in nah. Some on em chuck a few little stooans dahn to stop theirsens thura slippin when they're beltin t'knur, if it's wet th'ahrt liable to slip cos t'left fooit steps forrard when that's strikin ('e's belt a bag o cinders fer t'job). When tha's drawn thi knur tha can awlus tell which is thine cos ivvery knur 'es a different number on it. If it's a deeacent match, ther's sure to be a bucket theear laain odds on ivvery tipper. When t'match is on, six on em tack it i turns to strike. T'fu'st-un goes when this whistle blaws, then ivverybody watches wheear t'knur's gown, and a couple on em 'oo' awlus stand at t'back o t'striker, rush aht when 'e's belted t'knur an' shaht to t'seeakers at t'bottom o t''ill tellin em wheear it's gown "it's dahn bi t'gaate-'oile!" or "it's ower bi t'bog-'oile!" (That's a reight sloppy corner o t'field). Then ivverybody dahn deear looks abaht till they finnd t'knur an' when they've fun it, they mahrk t'spot wi t'tipper's number. 'e's keepin cahnt of 'ah many tu'ns they've awl 'ed. T'best shots are when tha yits t'knur fair an' square i t'middle o t'spell-'eead. After a shot or two, some on em fix a new 'eead onto t'spell, they'll leet a fire an' whip t'new 'eead on wi thin band an' cobbler's wax. 'e's rubbin t'faace wi resin to stop t'knur fra slippin to one side when 'e 'its it. That's Betty, shoo's collectin fer t'tlub throo fowk 'oo've bin watchin t'match (Aye! An' throo anybody else an' awl if ya can cop em). In a reight match lahke this, ivvery tipper 'es ten tu'ns. Some on em, 'oo've 'ed a bad shot or two, mahrk aht anuther strikin spot (*sniggers* ther's Betty theear cahntin up...). An' when it's awl ower t'refferee gets a long chain an' measures up 'oo's belted t'longest shot. That fella at t'fahrend wi t'white flag stands bi each knur so that t'reff measures in a streight line. They measure t'last yahrd or two wi a taape measure. T'local bucket awlus mecks a bit o waage aht o this job fer 'issen, an' when they've awl bin paayed aht, ivverybody goes to t'pub t''eve a pint or two an' tawk it awl ower. They saay sport's a deein ahrt but Ah bet thee, they'll be tippin 'eeare i Cowlin, Aye, in anuther 'undred yeear!.
