Willie Stargell, Matty Alou, Roberto Clemente, what an outfield! Two Hall Of Famers and Alou was a two-time All--Star, a batting champ, and finished his career with a .307 lifetime batting average. Sweet.

@@roguedicers3197 That was a great outfield, but the best outfield ever assembled in the 1960's was during All Star games. It had Willie Mays (CF), Hank Aaron (LF) and Roberto Clemente (RF). I don't feel there was ever an outfield that complete (hitting, hitting for power, fielding and throwing). Ask Tom Seaver about the 1967 All Star game that went on for 15 innings. He was in his Rookie season and he described what seemed like a surreal experience when he was asked to go save the game in the 15th inning. He recalled looking at the outfield and seeing Hank Aaron in LF, Willie Mays in CF and Roberto Clemente in RF. He said: It was at that moment I knew I was in the Major Leagues. Incredible experience. Wow But Roberto Clemente was an incredible performer. He was a joy to watch.

on June 5 1968 Robert Kennedy was giving a speech in the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles celebrating his victory in the California Democratic Primary. During his speech, he congratulated Don Drysdale who that night had pitched his sixth straight shutout. Later that night Robert Kennedy was assassinated in the kitchen pantry of the hotel. Mr. Drysdale carried a tape of that speech with him where ever he traveled and a copy of that tape was found in his hotel room where he passed in Montreal. in 1993

Wow, what a find! To see all those great names from the past (so many of them we have lost). To understand the problems baseball has today with declining TV ratings one needs only to look at this tape. The announcers aren't talking your ear off, providing esoteric information and analyzing every single thing that happens on the field. This game had 17 runs, a stolen base, three home runs, 8 pitchers, a manager ejection an intentional walk, visits to the mound, and guess what it took 2 hours and 44 minutes (from the box score). Today that game would have taken 4 hours, what's wrong is right in front of our faces only no one in baseball seems to see it.

Joseph actually here starting in the 2023 MLB season, a majority of regular season games are now back to averaging 3 hours due to the new "pitch club." So because of the pitch club and also smaller market clubs are now becoming playoff contenders or about to become playoff contenders for 1st time in years i.e Pirates, Orioles and Reds TV ratings across North America are improving.

DANNY KAYE the late, great entertainer and lover of the opera, once guest announced on 1970's NBC MONDAY NIGHT BASEBALL, and he played around with that name all nite long. Danny loved it and said it was musical and rhythmic like a name sung in an opera.. BOC CUH BEL LAA. Kaye who featured literal double talk and made up convincing fake words and pronunciations for pseudo-foreign words, for comedic effect in his act, actually sang Boccabella's name when JOHN came to bat. Quick factoid: If, you are not from CANADA, specifically the QUEBEC Province, you might not know that JARRY PARK/PARC JARRY was actually made up of land on what used to be an actual public-use park in MONTREAL.. The Donald Sutherland narrated EXPOS documentary early in their existence, speaks of that fact. JARRY was an actual public park in a previous life. Sutherland is a MONTRE`AL native.. Boy, those were the days. I can still smell the ambience! Clemente, Stargell, McCovey, Aaron, Mays, and for the Mets, Cleon, Agee, Tom Seaver. Jarry Park was a cool place to watch a game on TV when the Mets were there. I remember in 1973, Tom Seaver pitched a weekday night game there, had a 3-0 lead, and how he lost it I'll never know, and it was one of a lot of reasons he missed 20 wins that year. Also in 1972, Seaver's last start that season was there at Jarry, had a 4-0 lead that he just held on to after giving up solo homers to Ron Fairly and Jim Fairey

Montreal failed once. They would need to rebuild fan interest, and not just from the diehards. They don’t even have an MLB affiliated minor league team currently. The region has the raw population numbers, but would they support another team? They would need plans for a new stadium and a temp place to play in the interim (Olympic Stadium isn’t exactly ideal). There’s also the issue with the Canadian dollar. Revenue is in Canadian dollars, while salaries are, as required by collective bargaining, paid in American. You would need to secure broadcasting rights in English and French- not having the former was an issue near the end of the Expos. Weather plays a role too. It’s cold in April and sometimes October. Attendance in northern markets, such as Detroit, Cleveland, even Chicago to a degree is lower (outside of Opening Day) because of it. Yankees and Red Sox are the exception because, they’re the Yankees and Red Sox. Montreal would have to find a way around this. The Blue Jays claim the territory currently. They would likely complain about a Montreal team (granted, due to the long distance this is a more minor issue). I’ve been to Montreal and had a great time. I would go there to see a baseball game. However, I stand by my thoughts that another city should get a chance before Montreal gets their second.

@@someguy23475, well stated using data and logical arguments without using smear tactics, attempting to marginalize the poster that you disagree with. That is indeed refreshing. Now.. I was for MONTREAL getting a team, too, but your arguments convinced me to agree with you. I was thinking that the diehards would be enough and that nostalgia might bring enough interest to build a better ballpark, but apparently, based on your argument, there mayn't be enough of them to get that park/parc built. The fact that there is no MONTREAL International League team does raise the question: is any kind of baseball a thing in MONTREAL? I had not thought of that. An I.L. team could actually play in OLYMPIC STADIUM right now. Why isn't there one playing there..now? Charlotte, Nashville, and if the A's do not move to VEGAS, and that seems to no longer be in doubt, but if they do not, that burgeoning, growing metro in NEVADA is a no-brainer for expansion, and they all have TRIPLE-A TEAMS. I am not sure about INDIANAPOLIS as an MLB market. How do they draw in TRIPLE-A when the team is not winning? Is baseball that big in INDIANA? How will CHICAGO'S DUO react to the idea? I would be willing to bet though that CHARLOTTE and NASHVILLE would get in even though they are so regionally close in mileage to each other= relatively speaking that is. Now, TAMPA BAY is one more no-vote away from seeing that club move out of their current market. Either CHARLOTTE, NASHVILLE, OR some other town could be where they relocate. We'll see. If that move happens, we might see an INDY or MEX. CITY or even a MONTREAL enter the picture, or even an AUSTIN the fastest growing big money metro in Texas. San Antonio does not have the money in their entire metro to support an 81 games a season MLB team. When the city/metro got a TRIPLE-A team a few seasons ago they did not support it. It lasted only one or two seasons, tops before a DOUBLE-A designated team came back into S.ANTONIO. ROUND ROCK has been a smash hit in TRIPLE-A in the AUSTIN METRO. AUSTIN is growing enormously from 300 or 400K in 1980 to almost a million now inside the city limits. Metro-wise it is approaching 1.7 million with a booming middle and upper class. They have the money and a large Hispanic population peppered with many newby CALIFORNIANS with money. Of course, indemnities, payments for territorial infringement come into play there, unless that territorial claiming right is struck down on anti-trust grounds by the fed. congress. Finally, one city that should not get one is PORTLAND, OR. Why? Well.. One more politically charged, unconstitutional non-peaceable "protest" occurring during the family oriented game of baseball in the summertime with fans attacked on the streets and in their cars coming back from a game or going to one, and MLB would watch that franchise turn into another SEATTLE PILOTS= there today, gone from there tomorrow= because not many would want to attend any of their contests from that point forward, and MLB would not want the P.R. nightmare. MINNEAPOLIS AND SEATTLE have had MLB a long time, and that enabled them to overcome the riots, arson, assault, attack on federal and federally funded installations, and in Seattle's case= illegal seizing of taxpayer funded public streets, and vandalism that they had in 2020.. As for MEX. CITY, OR MONTERREY, MX., the politics are too unstable there. SAN JUAN, P.R., does not have the money and its pro-marxist leaders would not put up the jack without first stealing from the public's kitty. Meanwhile.. MLB does not have enough talent now to field 30 clubs, so if they expand, they will only add two. I no longer see MONTREAL as a possibility. Thanks for the points. Now, someone needs to refute his points and mine, and do it only arguing against the points, not the messengers.. Can you do that out there? Can you? By the way, don't rule out a KANSAS CITY move in the next five or ten seasons, either. Nope.

It was around as early as 1954, when "Sports Illustrated" [then in its first year] showed an image from a TV monitor from a Yankee Stadium telecast. SI said it afforded a view that had, until then, been available only to the second baseman [the camera was somewhat to the right field side of center]. Yankees' dictatorial GM, George Weiss, didn't like the camera's being there, fearing that someone in the clubhouse could steal the catcher's signs and relay them to the batter. Sounds like the 2017-19 Astros, right? Beginning in about 1963, my then-favorite team, the Orioles, began using the center field shot almost full time.

The CF shot is a great shot, and I do remember when it became prevalent sometime in the early-to-mid-'70s. I gotta say, though, that I LOVE the "backstop" shot best of all, to be able to see the pitcher's stuff and delivery as it looks to the batter. There's a YT video of the Orioles' Mike Cuellar pitching against the Pirates in the '71 World Series, and from that camera angle you can really see his screwball breaking sharply away from the right-handed hitters, and it's positively breathtaking. A mix of CF and backstop would be great, and I would even like to see a wider shot from perhaps the dugout of the pitcher/hitter, mixed in just once in a while.

I much prefer the way they showed baseball and football games then, instead of the limited-attention-span quick cuts used nowadays. Do we have to see close-ups of players and coaches in the dugout spitting after every pitch, or football coaches standing or pacing on the sidelines after every play?

The Expos were a second-year expansion team. The 1969 team was bad, but it could hit a little. It was really the only positive aspect of the team, much like the 1962 Mets. And like the original Mets, whose offense flowed through fading veterans like Frank Thomas (the white one) and Richie Ashburn, much of the original Expos' attack flowed through Mack Jones, Ron Fairly and, at least early in the season, minor league veteran Coco Laboy. In order to improve, the Expos, like the Mets, had to get younger and bolster their pitching and defense. In both cases, that led to an improved record in the second season, but a less exciting offensive team.
