1966: MAYHEM in MUNICH | Whicker’s World | Weird and Wonderful | BBC Archive

Ойын-сауық

“When women are granted an evening to grab any male they fancy.”
Decadence. Exhibitionism. Bland veal sausages.
Welcome to Fasching, the Munich carnival of debauchery that precedes Lent. The good folk of the city are encouraged to drink as much as they can, behave as outrageously as they can, dress in jaw-dropping costumes. Married couples go their separate ways for the night, whips are cracked in public squares and through it all floats Alan Whicker, who seems to be enjoying the spectacle.
There’ll be a lot of forgiveness to be prayed for come the end.
Clip taken from Whicker’s World: Fasching in Munich, originally broadcast on BBC One on Saturday 30 April, 1966.

Those were the Swinging Sixties here in Germany just as in England. The actual answer to Alan Whicker's question to the young lady at the end is that back then, Lent was observed in one way or other by a majority of people, so Fasching had meaning. The general celebrations Whicker attended in what is now the pedestrian precinct (but then still had trams rolling down it) no longer exist. Even then, Munich was to some extent imitating the Catholic Rhineland, where such public celebration still exists today (Mainz, Cologne, Düsseldorf) and is called not Fasching but Karneval. But here in Munich it is only private (Fasching Balls) and the main public attraction is the dance of the Marktfrauen on Shrove Tuesday.

Ah, but Boris doesn't need a costume or mask to appear a grotesque, freakish, self-indulgent caricature.

Yes, the Zeitgeist of the swinging 60s. Some day that Berlin in the late 20s was even crazier.

This is nothing compared to the Muslim Mayhem in Munich during the 1972 summer Olympics. Unfortunately, Europeans didn’t learn their lesson and a repeat is almost inevitable because of myopic woke politicians who ignore history and their ridiculous wide open border policies when it comes to people from certain extremely dangerous countries.

My god! You people sit there shoe horning your racist intolerant views into every comments thread! What is the matter with you! What has that got to do with this film? Why pick such an unrelated incident? Why not the home grown German terrorist groups who committed many attacks? Or Basque separatists,or the IRA?

The UK has a pressure group call The Muslim Vote, which basically pedals an anti-Semitic, anti-west agenda.
