1984: Searching for TRUFFLES | Food and Drink | Weird and Wonderful | BBC Archive

Ойын-сауық

Food and Drink sent a team to Périgord to sniff out the story of how the particular delicacy of the black truffle arrives via the French countryside to the fine dining establishments and home dinner tables of the UK.
Colloquially known as the black diamond, the underground fungus is found between December and April with the aid of dogs or pigs.
Clip taken from Food and Drink, originally broadcast on BBC Two, Thursday 12 April, 1984.

I thought it was a bag of truffles . How once you realise the dog is in there , it becomes clear. He doesn’t want the dog to know the location . This way the dog want go to the location hunting truffles on its own.

@@Thevrretroshow1 True, it's sobering to recall how, in 1984 there was a major commemoration of the D-Day landings, recalling a different time in history. Perhaps it's just personal, but to me - 1984 does not seem so distant.

The Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute of Japan has announced that it has successfully grown truffles, a highly prized and expensive delicacy, using artificial methods. This breakthrough raises hopes that Japanese consumers will soon be able to enjoy locally grown truffles, which are currently imported from other countries. However, the institute cautions that it will take some time to commercialize the artificially cultivated truffles, and they aim to achieve this goal within the next 10 years.

this video is high on entertainment. dog travelling on a bike, in a bag. sheep discussing what, exactly, the dog is doing. apparently they don't know. and the word 'trrrrooofff'. that's how the french pronounce truffle. i did have truffle once, at a posh restaurant. not sure what the fuss is about. perhaps i had a duff truffle.

It was more interesting when they used pigs to find truffles. I read that the pigs liked to eat them though, so dogs are better to use.
