In Sweden, where I live, tattoos really didn't start to become fashionable until around the year 2000. Before that they were more or less only seen on sailors and people who had been to prison.

Nobody wants to wear what they were wearing 20 years ago, let alone 30-40 years ago. People who get tattoos somehow think they won't age (or, more likely nowadays, don't think and just follow the herd).
My sister got her (then) husband's name tattooed in a similar area to Elaine here (4:50) Well, when Damien ran off with another woman, Kim went back to the tattooist and got his name covered up with some roses. My brother got his wife's name tattooed on his leg, and both siblings turned to me and asked why I didn't have my wife's name tattooed on me somewhere. I said that I *hate* being jabbed with needles (- oh, these past few years...!) of any sort. And, thus, if you think I'm getting Tjandrawasih's name tattooed across my chest, forget it!

I won’t even comment on face tattoos. When I was a kid my mum and dad would take me to places like Bridlington and Whitby. There I often saw old tanned fishermen sitting on the quayside mending nets. Almost all had a faded tattoo of an anchor or ship or sweethearts name. It was a cultural thing and fitted right in with the single earring many of them had . They looked the part . Today they are everywhere and look particularly awful on young women. I think this trend was all begun by Paula Yates………enough said.
