I had a similar issue. A garage put the handbrake lever on the inside of my brakeshoe in the past. So I was not aware that mine was assembled wrong. I had constant adjustment issues, hopefully I can solve them now .

Interesting. Yes, since they fit on both ways, I just got it wrong. Good luck with your VW project(s)!

Yes - I have seen some of those - great videos. I don’t get everything right on the first try sometimes, but want to document the entire process of this bug - the good and the bad…

We’ve all been there , sometimes it takes more than once to get it right , I see your axle boots are at 12:00 they should actually be at 10:00 or 2:00 to flex properly otherwise they will crack prematurely

Thanks for the info - ok - to turn them to 10 or 2 i just need to loosen the 2 clamps, turn them, and tighten. How quickly do you think the premature cracking happens?

@@LarsonSplitBus- yes just loosen and reposition , couldn't say how long it would take to get damaged in that position it depends how much your driving etc but with the seam at the top the boot will not flex properly with the axle going up and down .

Why not just switch the shoes without removing the clip ?

The problem was the plates were reversed. That means the emergency brake hole was on the wrong side…
