Totally eye opening video. Thank you Lawrence. I went and read your original TSF post. The auction house in question should be ashamed. Not even offering to refund their wretched fee.

I wish Mr chard, would spend time on sorting his business out, they don't take credit or bank card on the phone, they never give a bloody price on the phone, nothing is ever priced when you try to buy from them, they promise to ring you back, and never do. Not a way to run a business.

I hope you enjoyed the read. The TSF thread tells the story much better than I could.

By my calculations the expected purity of 91.7% has been debased to 87.6% (average). That is a saving of 4.1%. At the current price of gold this equates to about GBP 20 per coin. In order for the counterfeiters to make money, after they have produced the dies, struck the coins and sold them, they would have had to produce a large number of 1957 sovereigns. The counterfeiters would have had to flood the market to turn a profit. The official mintage was just over two million. The alternative explanation is more sinister. The gold could have been produced from illegal mines (hence the poor alloy mix), possibly from countries like DRC. The gold was turned into sovereigns as a way of trying to launder it. These counterfeits no longer debase our currency. Nevertheless, it does mean that some people are making serious money out of this enterprise.

23:11 great informative video as usual. Funny this sovereign is next on my list. I’ll maybe have to deal with you if the price is right😉

Pity their business does not get with it. Their staff can never give a price, and you have back several times, and still get nowhere. Mr chard needs to sort his staff out.

Mr chard needs to get with the times. They can never give you a price of their coins, their promise to ring you back, they don't, take credit or bank cards only cheque, I wish Mr chard would sort this out, and get with it. It's a joke.

I'm glad you enjoed the video. The original buyer, JT, didn't lose out, bacause we aquired it from JT, primarily so we could shoot this video. Our notional loss on the coin was minor compared with the value of the time I had invested in the discussions up to that point.

I would like Mr Dyer of the Royal mint have a look at this piece. Worth sending this to the Royal mint for their opinion on this one.

Indeed, I think he would like to see it. I will try to remember to take it with me the next time I go to visit the excellent people at the Royal Mint Museum.

Hi LC. I’ve been coming to you since Dale St. 😮 on the subject of errors I have a 2022 1oz Silver Britannia with a 90 degree die rotation, yes it’s genuine 😎 I’m thinking of sending it to NGC and likely get a population of One. There aren’t many I’m sure.

That's going back a while. You must be 29 like me! It should be worth getting the error Britannia "slabbed".

I think I know what auction house this was, will not say, but I bought a 5 sovereign 1887 from them and it turned out to be fake. It was lower weight than it should have been and just looked fake. I did not get my money back as they said it was genuine, lost out when I resold, last time I bought a coin from a auction house.

I did not reveal their name in the video, but it was mentioned many times in the TSF (The Silver Forum) post which we provided links to in our description above. It would be interesting to know more about your experience.
