1956 Tonka Cargo King Semi Truck Hauler Restoration
I purchased this 1956 Tonka Cargo King Semi Truck off eBay January of 2022 for $100.78. It was in dire need of help. Overall it was very complete for being 66 years old. Outside of missing a rear trailer gate, mud flaps and one hubcap everything was there. The body was in extremely rough shape and ended up taking multiple coats of filler primer which I didn't show, just due to the boring nature of spraying and sanding over and over again. After filling the body with high temp filler and high build primer it came out super smooth. It had a couple minor imperfections that show in just the right light. While taking the truck apart I found what appears to be a white mold in-between the tires, which I though was pretty weird, however I do believe this at one time was a flower pot from the dirt that was in it. I made an attempt to save the original wood floor before deciding to replace it with new. I remade the mud flap bracket and tandem axle plates by cutting the blanks out on the CNC mill and then made a stamping die on my resin 3D printer, once cured, I was able to use a hydraulic press to stamp or emboss the details into the reproduction parts. This is the first time ever trying this process and I was super happy with how it came out. Definitely opens doors to some additional parts I can make in house. The aluminum bed has more imperfections than what I would like however for being 66 years old I was pleased with the outcome. Thanks for watching!

I am 71, and I had this exact toy as a child. The only thing I think I remember that was different was that the rear slide door was also corrugated like the rest of the trailer side. Otherwise a beautiful restoration as always.
I collect Tootsie Toys .Brings back fond childhood memories an makes me wish I was a kid again !
Thank you , Nice job . (And we wont mention the mud-flap bar ) 😉 🐺

I'm glad that there are people out there who restore things back to fantastic and new condition, too many times I tossed things out even though I didn't want to, because I lack knowledge of how to fix it, and skill.
Thank you so much!!!!!Video perfect 👍!!!!Number 1!

I've seen other "restorers" videos but none are as enjoyable to watch nor have the skills you do and their finished pieces reflect that. Thanks for an interesting & relaxing hour.
Best video yet! And you really do have The Most Interesting Tools for your use.
You are a positive person.. I love your posts that make me feel optimistic and cheerful. traffic acceptance
Most awesome truck restoration ever.
Looks great even with the trailer landing gear installed backwards...
Beautiful restoration better than new

You know... That Filler Primer color is very pretty.
Great job truck looks like new. Thank you.
A spectacular job of restoring every single piece in this massive project. What is even more impressive to me though, is the masterpiece of video editing done to make this process look so smooth and seamless.
What a beauty. The only thing I like more than seeing what you do to your old little boy toys is the big boy toys you use to fix them all up!!
I was starting to think it would take a magic wand to save that wreck… didn’t know you had one on you! 🪄
One of your best yet. Congratulations!
Another awesome build.
thanks for the macro shots! Almost none of the restorers shows the consequences of corrosion
Oh my word, what a fabulous restoration, brilliant. Thank you.
Excelent job you have good skills
Those axles were used and abused... holy cow. That truck put in a lot of work.
I'm absolutely 💯 %impressed 😇❤
This was an extremely thorough and accurate restoration using some very sophisticate equipment. This truck and trailer would be a great display piece in someones home or office. Beautiful~
Your skills and techniques have increased so much over the years. This is a stunning example of that. I am totally impressed. I love to watch you work. I restore toys myself for my own collection but you Sir are on a much higher level than me. Looking forward to the next one. I hope it is the tank. Wink wink.

For me, circular references are the worst!
I think you have surpassed the Tonka factory in quality workmanship. These would be gem level.
I truly believe the patient attention to each small detail of this project really brings out true authenticity of the original vintage truck. Truly magnificent work.
This dude is the VICEGRIP GARAGE of Tonka trucks !
I’d guess 125,000 miles but only driven on salt packed roads in the north. I really enjoy your videos.

I'm from Indonesia, your channel is unique, if in Indonesia you will get a title or nickname with the term less happy childhood, it means that when you were young you were not satisfied playing because of something, for example limited playing time because you have to help your parents make money, so that when you grow up You can make what you wanted as a child. Thank you, this channel is very inspiring for fathers in repairing their children's broken toys. Wow cool for you,_ ady kiwa
WOW! You've got ALL the toys...and I'm not talking about the things you restore! CAD program, CNC, 3-D printer, lathe, all the Dremel stuff, welder, professional spray booth with filtration, sandblaster, oven for curing powder coat paint....I love it, and am partially jealous...(although I lack the math skills it takes to use the first three items I mentioned)...
Firstly, holy cow! The rot on those wheels and caps! DANG. You've never had any of either nearly that bad! I won't lie, I got excited while also in awe. lol "How many miles?" THOSE AXLES, WOW. Never seen any toy vehicle with that kind of wear. O, the stories this truck must have. All the adventures and roads paved for it by the children at the wheel. How much it must have been truly loved to get so much use. Suggestion for the future when trying to salvage the wood pieces! Clear acrylic filler! Even if the wood is terrible, you're keeping it with the entire project together that way, and in much sturdier condition! You could even add a little color, flake, or pearl to the fill. :D
Imagine back in the 1950's-60's getting toys like this for Xmas/birthdays etc. Even after all this time, they're still holding despite generations of being passed down. Anyone else have Ertl toys when they were still made from die-cast with real rubber wheels and such?
Keen eye for detail! Thank you for your time and talent!

You have me addicted... I went and bought a sandblaster to restore an old army gas tank for my Jeep. :) Thank you for your inspiration, I can't imagine how much you have invested in tools and time for these projects.
Great work, hard to imagine it would look better than new. I am the same age as the truck and I wished I looked as good.
Amazing that a kid's toy from the 1950s outlasted all the appliances you buy today! Beautiful work!

Wonderful job! Loved it.
Ok , you got me! Beautiful work. I'm a girly girl now, but I used to crawl around with my brothers in the dirt, driving Tonka trucks. My personal favorite was a Semi hauling a 6 horse trailer. Wish I had them now! I'm 66 now! My dad took the horses from us, painted them up and put them with his horse collection! Haha!
Beautiful restoration Chip!!!
Excellent work! You'll find a pair of needle nose pliers will save your thumbs when nailing in small brads like on the trailer! Hold the tiny nails with the needle nose, and then pound them in.
Замечательно! Такая красота получилась! Реставратор от Бога! 🎉

I like content like this, remember when I was little I played with toys.... awesome
That whole thing was a complete mess the second you started taking it apart. Amazing restoration.
When ever I watch a toy being taken apart, I like to play this game call "what's the cleanest, shiny spot on the old rust toy?"
