1960 Tonka Farms High Stake Truck Restoration

Purchase the Rivet tool here!

I purchased this 1960 Tonka Farms High Stake Truck on the Facebook marketplace. This thing was definitely waiting to be restored and in need of a new life! It was missing most of the side panels and covered in rust! Although rusty, this truck was in great shape for a restoration. After sandblasting I found minimal pitting and only needed to use one filler coat of high build powder primer to fill the minor pits. Once wet sanded smooth this thing looked great! Thank you for watching!

I had several Tonka trucks along with a couple of Buddy L and Nylint. But the Tonka’s were always my favorite. This would have been in the early 60’s. The axles on the Tonka toys always lasted longer than the others due to the construction of the axle mount. It’s always a pleasure to watch you bring back to life old forgotten toys. Many good memories resurrected. Thank you!

Thanks for all of the great work you do of the medal toys. I wish I had someone like you around when I was putting my collection of Tonka Toys together. I had around 700 pieces in the collection from 1949 though 1964. only a few missing of every one produced by Tonka Toys. The truck is a 1958 and you made it look new!!! with the powder coating they will last a lot longer then the original ones made. Thanks again for the work you do.

Hey chip, a tip to add shine to the wheels. Use self shine floor polish. Get a piece of wood. Drill holes to accept bolts. Thread a nut and bolt through the wheel, pour the polish in to a suitable container, then dunk the wheels in, then place the bolts with wheels attached in to the wood , covered with kitchen paper towel, then cover with a lid and allow to dry.

Hey Chip. Great restoration, as always. After a little research, there appears to be powders specifically formulated to withstand flexing post-curing. Also, surface preparation appears to be crucial including an acetone wash followed by high temperature out-gassing in the oven (approximately 20 mins. @ 400 F). Judging by your world class talents, I have no doubt you’ll master some solution shortly! Cheers, John

Awesome as always! Suggestion: the white plastic dowel you use to bend the tabs over...if you will concave the end just a little so the round end of the tab will go up it, that will help keep the dowel from sliding off.

I grew up on a horse farm (no longer live there, moved away a LONG time ago.) These types of trucks would deliver HUGE loads of Hay and or Straw to the farm. I would have had to help unload it. I never saw THIS vintage a model show up at the farm though it would have been PRETTY AWESOME to have seen one IRL. =o) I kinda miss the farm.

Chip Channel champions another restoration and the sheep are ecstatic! The sheep were lined up for their ride to the shearers shed and even jumped the queue to get on the fully restored truck. They looked excited and Chip was pleased with the amount of wool obtained and packaged. They all posed with their new haircuts for a team photo and even Cyclop Sheep seemed to be smiling. Who knows, maybe he met a little sheep for the night. All is well in Chip Channel sheep ranch as we watch him add another amazing restoration to the table of fame. Inspector Beaker was very impressed. Well done Chip.
