On "My Car Story" we're in Glendale AZ at The Martin Auto Museum on 1-23-24.
We're looking at a 1948 Tucker 48 Torpedo in Black Paint. This car has a 335 CI flat 6 cylinder engine and a 4 Speed Pre Selector transmission.
Mel Martin is the Owner of this car. He’s had this one since today! Mel shares his wife Sallie always wanted “A Big One” for the collection, and the rare and desirable Tucker is a great choice, so when the car arrived today, Mel named this car Sallie.
To see more cars from the Martin Auto Museum, go to www.MartinAutoMuseum.org When in Arizona, they are located at 4320 W Thunderbird Rd, Glendale, AZ 85306, and they are open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 5pm. You can also call 1-602-298-2377
If you’d like to see the Tucker that Nancy LeMay has at the LeMay Collections in Tacoma WA, go to www.LeMayMarymount.org. You can call 1-253-272-2336

I'd love to get an actual pov driving impression from you Lou. This may not have been the best time for that here because it was a celebration and whatnot. Maybe better to go revisit them on another occasion so you can have them take it out and you ride in the back. I'm very curious about the noise level inside the vehicle with the windows closed whether it permeates inside the vehicle. It's a really cool vehicle in all though!
One of the meanest looking cars of its time.

What a nice homecoming! The car is only half of the story here, but it is an honor to see it arrive to the museum and into Mr. Martin's care. Of all of the wonderful cars on display, this is truly a special one. Thanks, Lou!

What a great car Lou! You got this right after the Mecum auction last month, I was watching it on TV. This is truly a piece of American history. I see it has the accessory radio installed - Preston sold the radios to prospective dealers to finance production before the first car was built so there are actually more radios out there than actual Model 48s produced!

This car is a prime example of innovation and styling in its prime. Proof that Preston Tucker was a visionary. Sadly his vision was crushed before it could take off. And unfortunately the car scene hasn’t been the same since. I wish car companies today had a pair to challenge the norm with a different design like Preston did.

Tucker was so far ahead of his time that the big 3 couldn't handle it. It's a shame what happened to the Tucker. Didn't the headlight in center turn with the steering? Thanks for one of the rarest post-war cars out there Lou. Keep up the great work 👍👍
@loucostabile
3 ай бұрын
Hi Pat, Happy to share this rare treat with you :-) Yes, the center light turns when you steer the car. You're welcome, Lou
@onemoremisfit
3 ай бұрын
The center headlight not only moves with the steering, but also the linkage is designed so it does not move until the steering moves enough to make a turn. That way the light stays still for small movements of the steering wheel that normally happen while cruising straight and only moves when you actually make a turn.
@lauralowry9895
3 ай бұрын
And that third light did not turn on until the steering angle was greater than 10 degrees. So it was off for normal driving.
If I remember correctly, only 4 Tuckers were painted black. Very nicely filmed, thanks Lou!

As others have already pointed out top number is body no. 1023 but at the bottom is serial no. 1021 which is how the Tuckers are usually Identified. Serial no. 1034 has body no. 1037 and vice versa. I could be mistaken but the biggest numerical difference between body and serial number I researched was serial no. 1023 had body no. 1008.

Congratulations to the new owners! This is the rarest color of the six factory colors (the 4 black cars are 1016, 1021 seen here, 1030, and 1041.) A seventh color (Opec Cameo Cream) was planned but 0 cars received that paint (so maybe that’s the rarest color?)

Beautiful specimen! Ahead of it's time for sure. I got a little angry watching the movie, Tucker: A Man and His Dream, shame this car didn't get to the public. The exhaust note is one I'd like to hear in person. I was sure you were going to highlight the center headlight. Where was the smoke coming from? Very nice car.
@loucostabile

Hi Mark, Happy to share this "Beautiful specimen!" with you :-) Lou
Cool! The engine definitely sounds like a helicopter engine. I'm sure they would have to do something about the loud sound if the Tucker went into full production.
@onemoremisfit
3 ай бұрын
Those engines were also originally air cooled in the aircraft application, because on a helicopter the engine can be mounted out in the wind. The engine had to be adapted for water cooling to run enclosed in the engine bay of a car without overheating, so Tucker had them modified with water cooled cylinders. The water jackets on the cylinders absorb a little bit of mechanical noise, so they would have been even louder with the air cooled cylinders.

What a treat to see this car! What was up with the smoke in the engine compartment? Nothing serious I hope. Didn't they offer custom luggage to go with the car? That leaves the new owner with something left to collect

Yeah, that was just a little blow-by from the crankcase breather, perfectly normal for all engines of that time period.
