1948 Israeli War of Independence | History of Israel Explained | Unpacked

Depending on where you stood in 1948, the war that broke out following the declaration of Israeli independence was a war of self-determination and sovereignty; of liberation and even of catastrophe. By the end of the war, Israel had lost 1% of its population, including 2,000 survivors of the Holocaust.
The term Nakba reflects the reality that some 700,000 of the indigenous Arab population were exiled or had fled the country and over 15,000 had been killed. And in response to the Israeli victory, more than 850,000 Jews living in Iran and Arab countries in the Middle East and North Africa were expelled from their homelands.
This was not an easy time - for anyone.
Join us as we continue piecing together those difficult days and discuss how the 1948 War of Independence changed the region forever.

The Muslim inhabitants of Lod were expelled (not the Christians) because they violated a ceasefire and amnesty. And the IDF lacked the resources to fully garrison a heavily armed city and were desperate to reach besieged Jerusalem. Again, the Arabs made their choice to break their word and suffered the consequences.

9:29 As far as I know Iranian Jews weren't expelled, as the Shah government in Iran was mostly secular and nationalist and later established strong ties with Israel. However the population of Iranian Jews dropped from between 150k and 100k to 80k, They probably left because they wanted to live in a Jewish state and they weren't treated well under the previous Qajar dynasty. But in 1979 many Iranian Jews left out of fear.

It is most unfortunate, the Persian Jews have been in (modern day) Iran since biblical times and historically the relations between Muslim and Jewish Persians were familial and neighbourly. The Persians -whether Jewish, Muslim, or Zoroastrian - have always been a culturally sophisticated and cosmopolitan people. Any sort of us vs. them divide seems to stem from malevolent state actors.

And then, the Arab countries poured in many more troops, eventually getting to 50,000-60,000 troops (data from wikipedia page on "1948 Arab-Israeli war"). However, by that stage, the IDF also bolstered its troops and trained them, getting to 117,500 troops, many of whom veteran volunteers who served in WW2. @@syedsuhaibdawarki200 From the initial combatants of the Hagannah in 1948, only around 5,500 fought against the Nazis in what is called "the Jewish Brigade" (you can read about it in wiki as well). The vast majority of the IDF in its infancy were thus indeed paramilitary civilian forces, drafted hastily with none or little training. This is why in the opening phases of the war, the preferred tactic of IDF commanders was to defend key positions, such as Yad Mordechai and not assault, knowing that a successful defense inflicts heavy losses while risking very little. HOWEVER, you are correct that this situation changed very fast, as by the ending stages of the war, many of the 117,500 IDF troops were newcomers from Europe, Jewish veterans of WW2, both from the American and the Russian forces. At that stage, the Arabs had very little hope of winning and Ben Gurion ordered a full scale assault, taking the entire Negev, leading to the ceasefire agreement of 1949.

Israel deserves to keep all the lands they won during all wars bc it was the Arabs who were always the ones who started the wars. The Arabs must learn that when they start wars; they will loose something. The occupied lands should become part of Israel permanently. The Arabs should realize that the territory the lost rightfully belong to Israel as reparations for their aggression. This will make them understand that wars will cost them a lot. These are multiple wrong ways to look at it. First, Israel did not take land just to take it. It is not like you fight me, so I go and take your car because you punched me. It is more like they took the land because it was being used as a launching point for attacks. If you try to run me over with your car, and I take it, it is so you can't use it to kill me, and not just because you started a fight with me so I take something that is yours. Secondly, zionist purchased lands, and also built up lands in uninhabited areas (like America did in 1700's). They wanted to make a country out of these lands they purchased and built communities on. Arab armies didn't care that zionist purchased land and built in (mostly, but not all) uninhabited areas. Arabs just didn't want the zionist to create a country with these lands, because there were also other Arabs living within the borders of the new state.

The Jews won the right to stay there, which is all that they wanted. If the arabs would have accepted it then they could have lived together in peace. The problem was that the Palestinians were led by terrorists who were more focused on their own personal success and wealth. So the terrorists were supported by Arab oil money. The money was used to build the wealth of the leadership instead of building a thriving Palestinian state. The Jews made Israel into a world class wealthy country which benefited all the local Jews. The Palestinians just cried about losing and were provoked by the leaders to refuse any peace plans. They had an opportunity to benefit from the Jewish energy to create success, but they chose ongoing war that benefitted only the Palestinian leaders. I feel you've failed to mention that Plan D was proposed >6 months< into the fighting between the Jews and the Arabs, the 'first phase of the war', in which both sides were fighting for control of various mixed cities and important roads, Jewish militia vs Arab militia. In the first phase of the war, because of the great attacks by the Arabs on isolated Jewish communities, the Jews resorted to defensive strategies with rather punitive retaliatory actions, Plan D was basically a strategy change: from defensive to offensive. It wasn't enacted out of the blue like I understand from how you explained it. Then a month later independence was declared, proper Arab armies invaded, the Jewish militias joined together to form the IDF and the war turned to army vs army in contrast to the first stage of the war. "nakba" like the fakestinians themselves, is a new thing that didn't exist back then. It was declared by the terrorist yassir arafat in 1998, for the 50 anniversary of the war they started, and don't want to end. The same applies to that people. The terrorist Zuheir Mohsen admitted in an interview to the Dutch magazine Trouw, 31 March 1977. Wij zijn alleen Palestijn om politieke reden,” ("We are 'palestinian' ONLY FOR POLITICAL REASONS") James Dorsey. "The 'palestinian' people DO NOT EXIST. The CREATION of a 'palestinian state' is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our ARAB UNITY. In reality today there is no difference between Jordanians, 'palestinians ', Syrians and Lebanese. ONLY for POLITICAL AND TACTICAL REASONS do we speak today about the existence of a 'palestinian' people, since Arab national interests demand that we posit the existence of a distinct 'palestinian people' to oppose Zionism. Yes, the existence of a 'separate palestinian identity' exists ONLY for TACTICAL REASONS, Jordan, which is a sovereign state with defined borders, cannot raise claims to Haifa and Jaffa, while as a 'plestinian', I could undoubtedly demand Haifa, Jaffa, Beer-Sheva and Jerusalem. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of 'palestine', we will not wait even a minute to UNITE 'palestine' and JORDAN. Here is the origin of the biggest lie in the history of humanity, the creation of an artificially invented nation 50 ago, to justify the annihilation of the nation with 3000 years of proven historical, archaeological, literary, and religious connection to that land. As that terrorist admitted, these are arabs, from those other states. They came there during the Ottoman (Turkish, not arab), the land was practically inhabited, Jerusalem was a derelict, village with no value for muslims. Yet, after the first Jews arrived from Europe in the 1859's to meet the ancient Jewish communities, PURCHASED the lands from their TURKISH OWNERS. The land was barren, and covered by swamps infested with malaria. When the Jews made that land flourish and started to sell their produce, they invested more, and for first time in over 1200 years, the land was productive again. That brought in those arabs, who fled starvation, to work with the Jews, and by that time, the Turkish planned the railway line Damascus- Hejaz-Cairo. Then the Ottomans lost those lands to the Europeans in WWI, and the British changed to 'palestine' the name the Turkish had for that territory, "District of southern Damascus", which capital was Ramlah. Jerusalem was NEVER the capital of any mohamedan entity.

A town named Ashkelon was bombed and my parents decided to leave for the US. The only way peace can be achieved is if the Arab countries don't use Palestinians as their puppets. If the Arabs leave the Palestinians alone to do their negotiations with Israel, Israel can stop bombing Gaza. Israel bombs Gaza trying to strike militant targets and tries to minimalize civilian casualties.. but unfortunately, many Palestinians are killed by the bombs. I know I said this in another video, but I have the PERFECT solution to the Arab Israeli war. They should all go to an Arab tea party, because King David doesn't just make a cup of tea, "HeBrews" it. After a few Abirs they will all be friends. Perfect because drinking tea is a world wide phenomenon. For those who are wondering what Abir is, it's an ancient Jewish martial arts. I also think the conflict between India and Pakistan could be solved with tea as they both grow it. I'm trying to find common ground in these conflicts when I have my own country.

People simply say that Israelis occupied and it was a tragedy but it goes way deeper than that. The kingdom of Israel existed before the State of Palestine in the B.C times but was later taken by other countries. In WW2, A lot of British forces left the area. But in 1946, Israeli forces occupied Palestinian houses. The Jewish state was granted Independence from the UN in 1948. Palestine then became part of Jordan but was taken back by Israel in the Six day war. In 2011 it became an observer state of the UN but wasn’t an official member. The kingdom of Israel didn’t have all of Palestine and the Palestinians didn’t do anything. War is never the way to fix things. Neither the Arabs of the Jews did anything. We are supposed to live in peace. The Jewish civilians did now have anything to do with this and many of the Jews and Arabs died. No one deserves that. Palestine does not deserve this. Early Israelis in the BCs didn’t deserve to be enslaved. We always want peace.

What "palestinians"? That thing NEVER existed. In what ancient texts is mentioned the existence of such muslim arab people, and state? In what year that mythological kingdom, state, sultanate, caliphate, etc., was founded? Who founded? Whom did they fight for the establishment of that "state"? Who was its first king? Where was its capital city? What other nations were their trade partners, and what was its economy based on? What was its currency? What language did they speak? What ancient literary texts were written by these fakestinians? Name them. These fakestinians are an artificial invention, an entity created to ANNIHILATE the Jews. Another weapon used by the followers of the "religion of peace", as it's written in quran 9-5 and 9-29. Besides, just as this video explains, the first war started in 1948, and since then , Egypt took over gaza, and Jordan, Jerusalem and the "west bank". They even were granted Jordanian citizenship and passports! That means, they NEVER saw the existence of any national identity different from the Jordanian. Furthermore, from 1948, till the 6 Days war in 1967, during 19 years, these arabs kept attacking and terrorising the tiny Israel. During 19 years Egypt and Jordan had control of these lands, YET, they NEVER ESTABLISHED, CREATED, PROCLAIMED, MENTIONED any "palestinian" people, NOR FOUNDED any "palestinian" state!!!! How come?! Because that Frankenstein monster wasn't invented yet in 1967. As the terrorist Zuheir Mohsen admitted in an interview to the Dutch magazine "Trouw" in 1977. "The 'palestinian' people do not exist. The creation of a 'palestinian' state is only a means for continuing our struggle against the state of Israel for our Arab unity. However, the moment we reclaim our right to all of 'palestine', we will not wait even a minute to unite 'palestine' and Jordan." This is your fakestinian people, a people invented 50 years ago that demands the land of a nation with over 3000 years of proven historical, literary, and archaeological connection to that land.

The origin of Arab genetics, Arab culture, the Arabic language and the religion of Islam is in the Arabian Peninsula, therefore the Palestinians are not indigenous by definition. On the other hand, the Jews are considered native to the Levant (Palestine) according to the definition because the Hebrew language, the Jewish religion, and the genetic origin of 40% Jews in Israel originated in the Levant (Palestine). They did not come from outside, they were created in the Levant (Palestine). Hebrew is the only Canaanite language that survived. Most of the Jews in Israel Today they are not Europeans. Although historically European Jews founded Israel and were the majority in its early days. In addition, Jews lived in Palestine as a minority but continuously before the Arabs before Islam and Christianity. Jews are considered indigenous by definition because the origin of the Hebrew language, culture and religion of the Jews originates in the Levant. And the fact that the Arabs were the majority does not make them natives, they will always be colonialists like the British in Australia. Apart from Avraham The first Jewish were cananeite people on cananaite land, speaking cananenite language Hebrew. The Jewish bible been written in cananaite language. What remain from the cananaite its the jewish not the arabs!!! If the arabs didnt start the 1948 war there were no refugee in both side.!! Its biased to blame only israel for the refugee crises. The arabs start the 1948 war...! expelling 100% of the indigenous jewish community of Bethlehem and Jericho until today they dont permit the non european Jewish community to return to Bethlehem and Jericho..!!..!!

If you want to educate yourself with regards what happened in 1948 get off KZread, far too much motivated reasoning and propaganda . Read Ilan Pappé's "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine" and then come back and watch this video for contrast. The difference would be funny if it wasn't so tragic. Humans can be awful!

scott weiler Buddy, I was born in Jerusalem so as my parents & their parents, so there isn’t a thing you’re going to say that would be true or close to being accurate. Therefore, I advise to take your media filled ideas and debate it with someone else.

scott weiler Before you start babbling, check your facts. Original Israelis were enslaved by the pharaohs in North Africa or what is known now as Egypt, the Palestinians or Philastinies (before Islam or Christianity) lived in the Levante area which was called Canaan. I truly want to go on, but you have no clue of what I’m telling you, so instead of feeding your poor brain right of big media outlets, open an actual history book & read. Until then, you have no debate points.

On Vacation Anyone with any sense who’s willing to do the research will find out that Palestinians are descendants of Canaanites and are the TRUE natives of the land. Ashkenazi Jews aren’t even Semitic, but just white Europeans.

@@ristonvesotsky953 No, he only talks about the "suffering" of the Israelis. Exactly like is happening rn. Hamas is called "baby killers" and "rapists" while Netanyahu bombs schools and blocks food and water going to Palestinian citizens. He's literally talking about using nuclear weapons on noncombatants.

Are you referring to the massive land grab of the 7th century, traditionally known as The Muslim Consquest? Or are you referring to the Effendi landowners selling plots at exorbitant prices to Jewish repatriates as a "land grab"?
