1947 Lifting Body Burnelli Concept Aircraft - Trim Session #2
This film shows the second trim session of the 37" free-flight rubber-powered Burnelli Transport concept aircraft from 1947, flown in Wawayanda, NY. Filmed by Tom Hallman on 6.3.24 with a Canon PowerShot SX20, and iPhones 11 & 14Pro. Fantastic photos taken by Peter Kaiteris with a Nikon D3400 70-300mm. Music via the talented musicians at ArtList.io, who breathe life into my films.
Trim session notes:
The cracked right prop spar was replaced, along with the thrust plates, which were at the edge of holding their position beneath the flathead screws. This led to a slight shift in the thrust, which was adjusted at the field after the morning trim session. I continued preferring the right pattern at launch, through the use of 1/32" thick gurney flaps on the TE & right rudder.
But the tilt of the wing was too much, which prevented her from climbing at the power burst, so on the final golden hour flight, I trimmed the gurney flaps a bit, which helped flatten the initial power portion, giving her a wider circle and higher climb. I also added more nose ballast, which helped keep the nose down during the power portion, and did not seem to hinder the glide.
Max winds might not be as much as I had hoped, but so far, she's up to 1740. I'd like to get a bit higher, closer to 1900. She still has a slight stall during some of the glide portions, which will get more attention in future sessions.

People over at the Secret Projects forum started a Burnelli Projects thread in 2008 and have been gradually adding to it; this season they are much enjoying your balsa Burnelli project.
Wow ....beautiful video of an amazing flight .
That's a gorgeous model. It doesn't look like it would be as stable as it is.
What a fantastic video. Thank you for sharing this with us. Smiles the entire time. The last flight was simply breath taking. Loved them all.
Neat-o airplane! And so cool still shots in the end!
Awesome ! Congrats on such a success on this model!
Vincent Burnelli would be very pleased with your efforts !! Blessings !! BA
It still stops my world every time it climbs, rises. And soars thru the blue wonder. It's breathtaking. It's a handmade gorgeous model every time too! Just marvelous! ❤

Thx. I'm slowly starting to understand her.
Good stuff, Bubs.
She definitely has a mind of her own! 😉. Such a beautiful, unusual plane.❤️
Inspirational piece of craftsmanship on many levels- building, finishing, trimming and filming. The mythical field of soft long grass is something we can only dream of in Australia!

Thx. She's been a dream project.
sky. sky. Breathtaking. Like a giant manta. Her lifting body is a great advantage in viewing from a distance. Nice job on the AOA and bank to get the most (for now) out of the Burnelli concept. Now if you could only make her come back to you.
Beautiful Tom. I’m sorry I left early and missed the golden hour

Another great day at Wawa, pal. Do it again soon!
I look forward to seeing your model planes fly. Thank you.

Thx.
I built several Guillow's kits in the 70's as a boy, mostly because the were larger than the box when they were completed. I was always disappointed with the plastic kits that started with a big box and ended up with a small model. I never knew they could fly so well until I found your channel. If there are any groups in the Phoenix, Az area that still do this, I would build another. Thanks for another beautiful film.

@@maxfliart Thanks for the info - I sent the club in Phoenix an email to see if there is a good flying field around.
Amazing, as usual!
Hi Tom! Thanks for sharing yet another great video! Watching this one fly is almost as fascinating as watching your Boeing fly! I'm sure you'll get it dialed in really soon!
There's no better way to start the day than to watch your videos Tom, they are just wonderful. 👏🏼👏🏼

Like magic! It's real!
1:40 such a shame the tractor ploughed over it before it was run over by that negligent bike and trailer!! 🤣 stunning model, love the colour scheme 👍🇬🇧🌈🙏♥️
Wonderful, the majesty of your craftsmanship and cinematography are unparalleled. Thank you for all you do Tom
So amazing, and cool, I love it. 009
Remarkable build and beautiful video. Well done.....

That’s so cool. Great work amigo! Now a Junkers G 38
Excellent. A great free flight Video presentation, Tom!
Wow ... Just stunning !
I envy your access to such large fields! The closest I could get to that area are beaches at extreme low tide (S.Wales, UK), but not forgiving to crash on !!
OMG You have saved my life literally Thank You -

Heaven 🙏🥰❤️! Thanks!
Lovely film Tom! What with the huge planar fuselage lifting surface and twin fins I thought this might just turn out to be one of those 'wandery' planes, the ones that have a mind of thier own and behave like flying weather vanes, indeed there was the odd little hint of this. Another brilliant bird! The original full size must have seemed well futuristic in its day. Wayawanda is looking lovely as ever, despite the 'plane attractant ditches'.. Beautiful skies in which to fly. Nice one Tom! 🌟👍

She's a beauty!❤ Are you familiar with the Vought XF5U/Flapjack? That's another interesting and unusual design to consider.🤔
Beautiful and inspiring as always. I have a silly question; could one put more winds into one motor to help her climb in the desired direction? AKA differential torque.

Thx for the suggestion. I've tried that with the Boeing flying wing, but in the end it became another factor that complicated matters, so I've opted to keep both with the same turns, and adjust accordingly.
Thank you again for the wonderful video, question, are the props contra rotating? Would a little more span help the glide. She dose seem to come in quite hard.
@maxfliart
Ай бұрын
Yes, the props rotate over the top toward the tips. Still working on that glide. It's a puzzle.
You are gonna need a DT on that one before the thermal Gods claim it. WOW.
@maxfliart

Thx, yes...been feeling the same. I've since made some adjustments to the lifting body, and have included a DT flap of sorts. Fingers crossed.

Did such a plane ever exist in full scale ?

Not this specific design, which was one of many concept designs in '47, but a version with the cockpit between the nacelles indeed has flown, as noted by a few who had commented on my original trim session feed. It's the Burnelli CYB-3. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burnelli_CBY-3
.I'm no expert on these things but it looks to me like she wants to circle to the left, Even though you've trimmed her to circle right... might be worth trying out
@maxfliart
Ай бұрын
Thx, Michael. That's definitely on my mind. Ironically, all of my other larger twins have flown better, after I forced them into the opposite direction, from their initial trim sessions. She seems to do what I ask of her, so it shouldn't take much to make it happen.
