Model Airplanes Flip a Lazy Day at Sunset

Ғылым және технология

Two days at Wawayanda were supposed to be calm and relaxing, but instead the wind was up for the duration of the first 12 hours, leading to zero flying. At least we accomplished a few field repairs. The sunset, and sunrise on the following morning, produced some beautiful flights, which are documented here. Filmed on June 11th & 12th 2024, by Tom Hallman using a Canon PowerShot SX20 & iPhones 11Pro & 14Pro. Music via the talented musicians at ArtList.io.

    The aircraft all climbed like a “lift”. So impressed with your video. The still shots were also amazing. Postcard perfect. I loved the time mentioned in some of the launches. Thank you for sharing this with us. Amazing from start to finish. Thank you’ thank you. The sun rise with the moon in the back ground shot in the same frame was also impressive.

    Yes, we all count our blessings. There's always activity by the sod farmers....either mowing with monster sized tractors, plowing or planting new seed, or in the heat of the summer, the dreaded water sprinklers, which are like magnets for balsa and tissue. But everyone is respectful of the space, so it's a good group on both sides.

    @@maxfliart Didn't they though! Forgive me Tom, for asking an indirectly related question, but is there a way to apply reverse rudder during a flight. I've thought of one and was wondering whether it'd ever been tried? Edited to add: I rigged a bungie cord/aspirin tablet link to automatically close my Nordic Halman sailboat's sliding hatch if it started to rain. The rain dissolved the tablet allowing the bungie to pull close the hatch. The same principle might work for ff and could be very simple and light. A wet string could provide the moisture. Do you guys use viscous timers for anything other than thermal decoupling?

    A tour de force from some MFA channel stars! If you'd rather fly than chase, then maybe it's time to get Zinnia on the chase case, after all, that's what grandkids are FOR! 🤣.. The opening shots of the countryside are wonderful, there's something very American about the look of the place, hard to put one's finger on exactly why, but I'd've guessed we were in USA if asked. I'm relieved that the weather forecast can be unreliable over there just as it can be over here. Thank you so much for sharing these lovely flights, wonderful as ever! Nice one Tom. 🌟👍

    Seems like you could rig up a drill to wind the band quicker. I imagine since they are set to right turns only, they will be blown by the wind away from you so you have to set up at a far end where the wind comes from to keep it in the field. Nice video! John from MI

  • @aeromodeller1

    @aeromodeller1

    Ай бұрын

    No, you do not want to wind fast with a drill. Winding heats the rubber, making it buck back. The motor will break before maximum turns. You must limit the winding rate, especially toward the end, to allow the heat to dissipate.

  • @maxfliart

    @maxfliart

    Ай бұрын

    As mentioned, there is zero feel from an auto-winder, which in the end is far more dangerous than imagined.

    Hi Paul, I have no idea. The Jabberwock, Gollywock and Dana-Moe were all designed by Wally Simmers near the start of WW2, so who knows what was being seen or shared at the time. But I've enjoyed flying them all.

  • @paulhelman2376
    @paulhelman2376Ай бұрын

    Was that a Jaberwok rog'ing from table? It was designed by Simmer's to have a 12 inch double bladed folder although single blade worked well. Simmers was the "S" of K&S. Wally Simmers and Stoop Karch both Chicago free flighters in the pre blast tube era when men were men and girls were girls!

    Fantastic flying and filming as usual. A question if I may about the rubber turns calculator. Do you have to take into account if the motor is braided or not?

  • @paulhelman2376

    Good film but lacks the fun we had winding 16 strands of quarter inch parelli without any blast. When that exploded it was exciting if not picturesque. That rubber was the "Right Stuff" if it remained intact. I am fooling around with cpmpressed air which at 120 pounds also gives a big bang when a connection gives way. Power pattern quite similar to rubber and since air is always available even if good rubber isn't.
