Menon and Mountbatten helped too, as did the Maharaja of Patiala and others. Patel also said that without the Indian Civil Service, the country would have fallen apart in those days. And all of them were greatly helped by the past 100 years that they were united under a single rule.

India was the richest country in the world just few hundred years ago. Christopher columbus was looking for a sea route to india. He was so clumbsy he went the wrong way and found America! - and we know the rest of history on what happened there. But my question is, why was columbus looking for India? In fact why was everyone in the world trying to get to India back then?? Because India had everything. India was the richest country and obviously had a lot of jealous haters. Prior to British rule India had like 25% worlds GDP. Post British rule it was down to 4%. India was robbed unfortunately Have a good day

My father is 91 years old. He saw all this and often told me how hard life was in 1943. Many people don't realise how many Indian soldiers were killed in WW2. We must never forget them. I salute the Indian Army. The most professional army in the world. Nehru was an Oxford graduate who was very interested in Mount Batten's wife. She liked him as well. Probably unified in bed on several levels...except partition. MB was assinated in 1979 by the IRA.

Is she the well known Parsi lady photographer, Homai Vyarawala. She was then the only Indian lady photographer who had covered the Indian leaders and moments leading to the Indian independence movement. She lived for many years in city of Vadodara (Baroda) in Gujarat.

Britain owes India and Pakistan (and by extension Bangladesh) a long overdue apology. Not only because the British have the blood of millions of innocent human beings on their hands, head and shoulders but also for promoting the division of a nation on religious grounds. Extending an apology is a hallmark of great people and great nations. But Britain has been anything but Great since the days the sun barely started rising over it! And Pakistan owes Bangladesh an apology for its part in crime against humanity in 1971.

Partition was the best thing to have happened to India. I can't imagine a single country where half of population are Hindus and half are Muslims. History has shown Muslims when in majority can't co-exist with anyone because of their fundamental, ultra religious mindset. India would have become another Israel.

viksam009 Viksam praji, tussi great ni ho. Insaan ki pechaan usske dharam se nahi usski mann maryaada se hoti hai. Yeh Geeta kehti hai, yeh Gurugranth sikhaati hai, aur yehi Quran bolta hai. Your views on religion are misguided. The bond of humanity that we all share far outweighs the religious practices that we follow. Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims have by and large all lived side by side for centuries with shared responsibilities and respect for each other. However, there is always a small disgruntled minority fueled by dirty politics that goes onto upset such harmony and equilibrium. No religion teaches its followers to go on a killing spree against fellow human beings simply because of their differences. Those who conduct such evil acts do so out of their own conviction. Evil is part of humanity. But, what you must not forget is that where there is evil, there is also no shortage of goodwill and divinity. Bhagwaan par vishwaas rakho, brother. Oooparwaala jab daita hai tau chhat phaar kar daita hai.

***** Waqar bro, it is very sad that you are quoting President Busharraf again. He was a politician but you are not. Politicians say stupid things to create division between Hindus and Muslims as it benefits their political propaganda and generates religious and nationalistic sentiments among the masses. It is true that the discrimination against the Muslims by the majority Hindus during the 19th and 20th centuries was in part responsible for Batwaara. But, it is even more shocking that the Muslims oppressed the majority Hindus during the Mughal empire from 1526-1857. Under the Mughal empire, India was essentially an apartheid state similar to the situation in South Africa during the 20th century. The minority Muslims barbarically destroyed Hindu temples and built mosques. They converted Hindus either by coercion or by enacting federal laws that made it very difficult for Hindus to prosper. Jizya (a form of taxation levied against non-Muslim subjects of a state) being one such crime among countless others. The point here is that it is wrong to stereotyope individuals on the basis of their religion. There are angels among both Hindus and Muslims as there are devils. Good and bad exists in every community and ghetto. One's religion does not make him any more righteous or superior than others. If you truly want to be righteous you just have to follow your conscience if you have one. Insaan ka zameer (conscience) usska sabse bada dharam hota hai. Ae gal tussi ni pulna.

viksam009 Viksam bro, I agree with you on that. With the exception of a few Muslim countries such as Malaysia and may be Indonesia, non-Muslims in Muslim countries are treated like second-class citizens and discriminated against. Under certain conditions, they are even coerced into conversion to Islam or put to death. This is shameful. Muslim countries leave so much to be desired and they are paying the price for not treating all citizens equal. They are backwards. They do not have world-class institutions. Look at the Middle East. Most Muslims in Middle East do not even believe in science, technology and innovation. They believe that such endeavors are for Western countries from whom they can easily import science and technology as needed with their oil money!!! Wow. And who can argue with them. After all, money is god! Is it not? Even though people in the Middle East (and pretty much all Muslim countries) appear to be so religious, they practically worship money not Allah. They know not. We Americans often talk about the wealth gap between the rich and the poor. But, the wealth gap between the top 1% and the remainder 99% in Middle Eastern countries dwarfs the American model.

@@denverbritto5606 bruh, never heard a joke better than this... XD Indeed India was comprised of numerous states but those "different" states always had a united front against brits.. Be it the revolt of 1857 or the guerilla warfare during the colonial rule. The proposal was to divide India into numerous states based on caste and religion but the brits were successful in dividing it into three not two countries. Transport system?? that was made for brits and the Indians weren't even allowed to set foot on? That was used to move their military in case any revolution arises? That was made with the money of Indians and the contract was given to an English Co. That didn't even use Indian labour? Military was used to oppress Indians not aid them, that was English army not Indian. Agriculture? The Indians were dying of starvation, just search bengal famine. Your thy holy Churchil even diverted ships to English storage and stated "Indians breed like rabbits, if the famine is so atrocious why hasn't Gandhi died yet?" Central govt? India wrote its own constitution and set up its govt after independence. Brits did nothing but plundered what they could, they sucked India dry and now preach the world of harmony. What you guys need is proper education to know the kind of atrocities Indians went through. Well, can't blame u, ignorance has been one of the main forte of brits.

@@denverbritto5606 FYI India had GDP of 23% before British came to India and when they left India looting all they could with only 2%. The very system that your raving about is the very reason that fucked up our whole education system as well as administrative system . Just read the articles on the Bengal famine topic and you'd know how your dearest Winster Churchill delebrately didn't allowed the stockpiles of food to be sent to Bengal that was produced in our own country caz he thought giving that stockpiles to Europeans was far more important than the poor Bengali's. The British officials requested him to understand the situation and help India but again he who can change a sadist. The Jaliwala Bag Incident is one of the most cruelest of punishment one can give were more than 300 people died because of the cruel act by General Dier were he and army of people fired at those innocent people. The place had only one way to go but that also was blocked by him. So people had no options ; other than to run or jump in the well near by. What India, Pakistan and Bangladesh went through; only we know how our ancestors survived. The pain , suffering and scares of the past are visible till today. Just put yourself and your dear ones in our place and you'd realize how painful it is to watch bloodshed happen right in front of your eyes. Partition happened in our country and the Indian subcontinent was in ruins. Massacres happened, houses were burned down, women were raped, pregnant women were killed, kids literally were burnt down to ashes, people were running for their lives, abandoned homes, people were homeless and so on. We as in the "Indian subcontinent" ; had to pay the price for our own freedom.
