It's easy to get resentful of people who have the money to drive whatever they choose, but with Leno, you're just glad that someone is looking after all these old motors. And properly too. He's a custodian, in the truest sense of the word.

What's wonderful about Jay is he's always had that love of cars. He didn't get into them when he became wealthy. He enjoyed them even when he was living in his Roadmaster when he first moved to California. And he still has that same car today.

Jay found an understanding woman when he met Mavis. I don’t know if she shares Jay’s love of automobiles and things mechanical but she apparently supports his passion for these great mileposts of our past and present. It’s refreshing to see this kind of marriage in this day and age. You’re a great example of what marriage should be Mr. and Mrs. Leno.

Thank you for this tribute to Phil Hill. My grandfather, Ken Vaughn, was his partner with Hill and Vaughn. Packards always remind me of Phil and my granddad, and they always mentioned to me that they had restored some cars for you. My family really appreciates this video, thank you.

My Grandfather worked for Packard Motor Company for ten years, up until the end WWII, the later years building Aircraft Merlin's. Thank you Charlie Vaughn for your story. Phil Hill was and is a Legend.

The way Jay speaks of his friends, you can tell just how good a person he is.

I was working at Hill and Vaughn when this was restored. Jay’s description of Phil is accurate. He was a wonderful character, and getting to know him is one of my favorite memories. I didn’t remember doing any work on this car as it wasn’t one of my projects. I didn’t even test drive it which is odd because Ken Vaughn, my father, and Phil (Hill and Vaughn) usually liked to get my input. Phil’s passion is matched by Mr. Leno. Phil’s 80th birthday at the car barn was a pleasure. I met Ms. Leno, Mavis as well. She is a fine lady. Jay is right about racers not getting rich. Phil once told me he got $500 for driving Le Mans. Great memories for me Mr. Leno. Many thanks. I’m glad the Packard is in such good hands.

In my 67 years I had the honor of meeting many of my racing heroes. I was at Sebring in '65 with the scouts. As a photographer I had the immense honor of spending two days with Sir Jackie Stewart. The ending of this video made me tear up. Cheers Jay.

One word springs to mind watching this particular episode: Class. This type of episode has always been my favorite kind with Jay. It's just the machine and him, devoid of anything or anyone else with something to promote or compete about for screen time. One gets the truest sense of Jays' love of the cars this way and this cars' story is amazing to boot. He's said often that he buys a cars' story as much as the car itself and this one just may be the best example of that. I highly recommend to anyone who likes this sort of video to go back in Jays' catalog of videos to the beginnings of JLG. Lots of videos in the early days along this same vein. Great to watch.

You are right on this, there are plenty of cars in the JLG, except it seems like we are never able to see them because he has someone else's car on. I'd rather see more of Jay's cars, and hear Jay's stories. Every once in a while, bring on another of Jeff Dunhams' Gremlins for laughs.

I really prefer when Jay exhibits the classic cars as opposed to the plethora of muscle cars and sports cars he has on. Admittedly, some of the classics were the muscle cars of their day, but they have much more historic appeal than mere flexing of horses and showing how much noise one can make to disturb the neighbors...

He then began talking about Packard the man.He was a mechanical genius, no doubt, but he was a man with an insatiable curiosity. He developed an interest in complicated mechanical watches. He would order bespoke Swiss watches and request complications that resulted in some remarkable time pieces ; culminating in a watch known amongst watch collectors as “The Packard”. This story led to another, and another about the world of horology. A subject that has consumed my interest for many years.Curious, how one story leads to another ( Packard to George Daniels I suppose).

Check out his back catalog of videos (there's literally years of them). He used to do a lot of his own cars and I still think some of those were his best JLG work - just the car and him, chock full of info on the car and the story of how he got it, etc.

I saw Phil Hill a couple times and briefly talked to him. Once I saw him talking to a guy with a Jaguar XK120. The jag looked really rough and it was obvious the owner cleaned it the best he could. The good thing is it ran and drove. He and Phil Hill were talking for awhile and Phil wanted to look under the hood. At that point Phil asked if anyone had tools. Somebody brought him a toolbox. The next thing Phil is under the hood turning wrenches. Amazing.

I honestly think Jay Leno has done more for the appreciation and preservation of classic automobiles than any other single individual. I love his knowledge and zeal for the preservation of these historic cars, but even more than that, I love the stories he tells about the individuals involved, particularly ones he personally knew. This video was very touching in that regard. God love you, Jay! You've brought laughter and joy to millions for decades. Thanks for all you do!!

That Packard is one of the nicest ones I've ever seen. Phil did a beautiful job restoring it.

Ya made me tear up at the end there, Jay. What a nice tribute to your friend. RIP, Phil Hill.

It really works a treat. I'm pretty sure my dad taught me but its been a long time. It stops the gears from spinning making it go into gear easier. It was a holdover from the days of double clutching. But like a lot of things it was lost to time. If also helps when you have a clutch that drags a little too.

stop the gear set with a forward gear and reverse will work without crunchieness, it doesn't need to be reverse

Always love watching and listening to Jay with his cars. I surly miss him at night. Stopped watching all late night garbage once Jay left. He is one guy I would love to spend some time with at his garage. He is real, not like most in LA.

i love it when he shows his own cars, he seems so much more comfortable in his garage infront of the camera and the viewers get so much more detail about the car

I prefer these kinds of JLG videos to those covering modern off-the-shelf exotics and even most customs. Love Packards, love V12s, going to love this video I'm sure.

All these years of watching Jay's garage and I never knew that he was friends with Phill Hill! One thing that has always amazed me is that the best racers; wether it was cars or bikes, were always modest and unassuming people. Kenny Roberts, Jackie Stewart, Phill Hill, guys that didn't look heroic yet were incredibly great competitors. Jay, who's reputation was based on being a comic, is in fact a real classy guy, intelligent and full of admiration and respect for the really great drivers and inventors of automobiles and respectful of the cars he has in his care. Hats off to you Jay!

I remember reading Phil Hill’s articles in Road & Track when I was in HS in the early 90’s. He was a gifted writer and story teller. I came for the pictures of Toyota Supras, RX-7s, 964’s, and ZR-1’s; what I got was a deeper insight into the love of fine automobiles. Thank’s For Sharing Sir, Rest In Please.

What a lovely tribute to your friend. My grandfather was the chauffeur for a wealthy Boston Socialite, Sarah Choate Sears, from 1912 to 1936. She always owned Packards. She even had one with right hand drive that would be loaded on the SS Bremen for her trips to Europe. Grandpa always said that, next to the Stanley Steamer, Packards were the best cars he ever drove.

Thanks Jay for taking the time to show us this wonderful car. My father received a very similar Packard for his 21st Birthday in 1933. Because of the depression Packards weren't selling as fast and so my father got a brand new 1932 Dual Cowl Phaeton V12 for his birthday in 1933. At the time he was attending Princeton but the family was living in Grand Rapids MI and he told me several times about how he blew the engine on his first trip home. The car was purchased at the New York dealership and the engine wasn't broken in yet when dad decided to return home for a visit. Packard recommended a break in period of 500 miles at varying speeds which on the trip home he didn't do. The engine let go on the trip back. In the '60s my father found and bought a metal model kit of his car (The scale was somewhere around 1/16-1/18). He bought it and spent quite a while painstakingly putting it together and painting it the colors his car had been. I remember as a kid CAREFULLY (with permission) taking the car out of the display to open hood and marvel at the engine, open the doors, lift the rear cowl and work the steering. Thanks for bringing back these memories of my day, Jay.

Mr. Leno. Thanks so much for this particular video. MANY years ago, in N. Jersey, I had the honor and privilege to drive a beautiful 1931 Packard, dual cowl phaeton to a car show in Hawthorne, NJ. It was owned by a very kind man, Mr. Bill Morgan, who befriended this young car club guy. Now, even as an old man, I have never forgotten that this gentleman, trusted a quite young guy with his prized possession. Thank you 'Bill' Morgan.

I always love how Jay works so hard to give you context around the car and its history. His knowledge is so complete and he can easily talk about all the cars that competed directly with the one he's talking about.

I appreciate that Mr Leno drives these cars. It's what they are made for and actually last longer if maintained properly. You know, Packard was the first to mass produce the RR Merlin V12 for WWII.

Phil Hill was a kind man and a gentle soul. So nice to see this lovely tribute to a true American original.

The fit and finish on this car is like a fine watch.

Amazing engineering for 1932, what makes me so sad is seeing Jay drive down the street and all the Foreign cars on the road in Ca, and knowing that Packard was not in business anymore. The build quilty is better in that car than most cars today.

Wow that was really heartfelt, wonder how he feels when he thinks about all those wonderful years, the wonderful friends and such . The 60s, 70s and esp the 80s, aah i wonder how he can suppress his tears when thinking of those times or his friends. You are valued Mr Leno, you definitely are. And we are sure you know that too. ...you are more than just a tv personality, you got tremendous more facets than that and THAT we we can all vouch for. God bless. Please laugh more and do things you love like these..you deserve it.

Jay is just incredibly humble and genuinely nice guy.

An old friend had a Packard collection. I loved those cars. Incredible craftsmanship. I was young and stupid, should have followed his advise but didn't. I was the only one he allowed to drive his cars. Being maybe early 20's that was a compliment. He taught me on a Packard you close the door gently till it touches, push on the handle lightly and the door will latch,.... click. I still don't slam car doors to this day. Thanks D.H. if your still around.

I have always liked and appreciated Jay, not only for his comedy, but as an old car enthusiast, I really have enjoyed his videos, especially this one because of the tribute to Phil Hill. I also appreciate the knowledge that Jay passed on through his videos. A friend of mine flew out to California one year to attend the Pebble Beach Concours Auto Show. He met Jay, struck up a conversation and asked for a picture with him. Jay agreed and that picture is now on the wall of my friend's shop. A good guy that, in spite of his success, is still down to earth.

Thanks for sharing Jay. A beautiful car but more important a beautiful story about your friend and a great race car driver.

Thank you again Jay your a class act. I to am a car guy. In talking a Phil Hill you reminded me of my uncle Gil. Gilbert Boice he was an amazing mechanic he served in the army in world war 2. He was badly injured when the tank he was in had the entire gun turnent blow off. Some of his crew members were instantly killed. She'll shocked and confused he made repairs to the tank a drove it back to help and safety. This was in north Africa. He was sent to London hospital were he spent months he was then sent home. He eventually became the service manager for a large ford garage in western New York. He was such a good mechanic that when Graham Hill was preparing to race a Watkins Glenn my uncle was asked to and did assist Graham in setting up and working on the car. I remember he took me to the garage and I got to sit in Grahams car and met him. I was all of six years old but really made an impression on me. Fast forward my uncle Gil who was now in his 80s was honored as a war hero. It turns out he had no recollection of the tank battle and his heroic deeds. He now has a memorial in his home town of Valencia Pennsylvania. He died a few years back but he was given a heroes welcome home and a parade and ceremony 60 years after the war. I always thought he was special but I had no idea.

Heard on a radio talk show last month about a guy in LA whose car broke down about 8 weeks before. Jay Leno pulled up behind him in a Tesla, took a look under the hood & got him back on the road.

What a wonderful episode and tribute!! How can 166 people hate something like this? IF they hate this, they will hate pretty much everything good in this world!

Beautiful car Jay, very quiet. Packard also built the Merlin's for the P51's. I didnt know they molded ashtrays in wood! Nice memorial for your friend.

When Packard died, so did an irreplaceable part of America that we'll never have back. About the same time as the steam locomotive.

Yeah, things really started to change after ww2 ended and noble as they were, the Packard marque dissipated into something unrecognizable. Big money, big economic influences, and rapid technical change. My dad bought a '37 Packard 4 door with a straight six just after the war. He was so proud of it and I recall standing up on the floor of the rear passenger space as he remarked on how stable and straight it would go down the road - hands off.

Indeed, Packard suffered from bad management from the late 30s to the end. Even when they cleaned house, it only got worse. I still can't figure, how after building all those Merlin (the greatest engine of the war imho) they couldn't have come up with a out of the park (think Chrysler hemi) ohv V8 by 1950. Just the reputation of the builders of the "engine that won the war" should've carried the marketing campaign. Heck, Cadillac didn't built fighter plane motors, just plodding tank engines! My Dad had a few Packards as a teen in the late 40s, one was a Twelve. I inherited his love of the marque.

@@robhoffhines630 , they did hit one out of the park with the 120, but after being a big success , WW2 came along, and after the war, it wasn't considered all that special anymore. And they were late with a V8. But they were wonderful cars. We have a Harley repair shop in our old Packard (later AMC) dealer building in my small WI town.

Jay Leno is great. Married to his wife mavis 39 years and still going strong.

My family were Packard, Studebaker and Ford people. My father restored a beautiful 1936 Sport Coupe, much like this car. That shot of Phil Hill and the G-40 really got me. What a car! Nice tribute video to your old friend, Jay!

Patriotic Englishman I may be, but that Packard Twin Six has got to be one of the most beautiful cars ever built. Just perfection!

Phil was one hell of a great, talented man. Did some work for his restorations over the years, and always thoroughly enjoyed talking with him.

This car has more features than some modern cars.

Problem is tho. With all the spoons that drive these days the Packard has no safety features like a belt or airbags, So i would be scared to take it out..Lovely car tho.

I love the auto. So few around. Jay's is a beauty and has a great story behind it. I'm too old to build another antique as much as I want or like to. Thanks Jay for letting me enjoy yours.

Thanks Jay. You got me appreciating my Grandfather's love of Packard. I grew up hearing all about them via family lore as he was a Packard engineer in the 1920's. That's all he drove until his death in 1952 I did not have a good frame of reference until your video as to why there is so much passion for the Packard. Now I know! My old pictures of my grandfather with his cool black Standard 8 Coupe has a lot more meaning now. Thanks again.

This just became my favorite episode. It is very touching to hear Jay talk about his friend Phil Hill. He must have been a great man. This automobile is beautiful. It was beautiful before I heard Jay talk about his friend and it became more beautiful as we learned more about Phil Hill. Mr. Hill was truly blessed to have a friend like Jay. And vice versa. Thank you Mr. Leno for letting us in and showing us yet another piece of your heart. Great great episode.

These are by far the best episodes on JLG. Hearing the history and emotion behind the iconic designs is fantastic!

I have a new respect for Packard now, and this was a nice video.

Jay, your program is just priceless. My wife and I live in the Philippines (her native country), where we live a very humble life. We can't afford to go out much, and we enjoy few luxuries, but your show is one thing that brings me a great deal of enjoyment. We don't have television or stereo, so we use our phones to access the internet. I have trouble sleeping due to the heat and humidity, and watching your program helps me happily pass a good many late hours that would otherwise be very boring and depressing. I've dreamed of collecting and restoring classic cars since I was a kid. I've not been able to fulfill that dream, up to this point in my life, but your program is a wealth of knowledge and education, that will undoubtedly continue to serve as a guiding light. I look forward to returning to America with my wife, soon, and to finding a classic car or truck of some kind to drive and possibly restore. I'm not sure what that will be, exactly, but I will most likely arrive at that decision, largely as a result of your incredibly informative reviews. Thanks so much, to you and your crew, for your dedication to turning out such a fine quality production. Its become a pretty big part of my life, and it means a great deal to me. God bless you all.

Lots of folks claim a particular JLG episode is their best. I think this heart wrenching tribute is mine. Jay is very respectful here and Phil always deserved that respect. American G.P. World Champion. A very small exclusive club and Phil? Just the kind of champ I like. The opposite of a braggart. You can hear the admiration in Jay's voice, as It's very emotional as a car racing enthusiast to watch this. A true American hero I dare say. This is Jay enjoying the fortune he has earned over the years.

Wow! This is a car that.......you're happy Jay has it. Why? He loves everything about it and admires the person he bought it from. It's a car that has a wonderful home until Jay passes. I only wish my father was here to view this. He liked Phil Hill too.

Before we had Mercedes and Rolls Royce, there was Packard. Such beautiful cars. “ Ask the man who owns one”. Shame they aren’t around anymore.

No manufacturer was before Mercedes. : ) Packard is exceptional though.

@@verdict1163 yes, Packard predates Mercedes. The Benz motorwagen is what you are thinking of. And that's even debatable. Mercedes didn't come in til later, after Packard was established.

People, Google gives you no reason to continue spouting disinformation and untrue "facts". Be part of the solution, not the problem. All this technology and people are getting further behind the curve.

Absolutely loved the insight Jay gave on not only the gorgeous Parkard but further the humanity of Phil Hill. Additionally the profound description of Phil Hill, “ a great accomplished person is unassuming”. Excellent, perhaps my favorite of Jay’s wonderful presentations. Thank you 👍

Jay's tribute to his friend Phil caused my eyes to begin to water; very moving, warm, and genuine.

I would like to take a moment to think Jay Leno. I am amazingly glad that someone like yourself has purchased some of the most amazing automobiles I have ever had the privilege to see. Under normal circumstances I would never ever even heard of half of these cars and I am a car buff myself. A lot of people with amazing wealth and also equally amazing car collections. Do not take the time to graciously walk us through their garage one car after the other and do what you are doing mr. Leno for no charge. I thank you, you are an amazingly gracious individual.

I'm impressed Jay. The audio volume of this video is finally great. I can hear all the information you present and talk about.. Thanks for fixing it...;-)

Seeing jay showing is books is just like my father used to do. He had so many books and magazines about cars it is incredible. Way back to the early 50s hot rod magazine to books recently published on every car imaginable. He truly knew more about cars than I ever will. Rip dad

Jay. Worked at a shop many years ago. Wrenched on many old great cars. All those co workers are gone now. So is our oldest son. He would keep the seat warm for me many times. Just a kid helping his dad. Great memories. Thanks Jay😄

What a genuine sweet man you are Jay Leno. Phil was probably just as appreciative to call you his friend. A beautiful tribute.❤️ And I absolutely LOVE that car! Thank you for taking such good care of her for all of these years!! she looks amazing for being nearly 100 yrs old!!
