THANKS PAUL , the " theory of operation " , eludes so many people, " ESPECIALLY A LOT OF MECHANICS " !! You have know idea just how many " pro mechanics " have no idea how something works or is suppose to work ?? 45 years in the trade rebuilding " MACK TRUCKS " working alongside " parts changers " !!! those adjustable drag links , in all vehicles , ( revolutionized the alignment industry ) ! the old vehicles that had a "selective fit " ( keyed or otherwise , steering wheels ) , made the alignment guy pull the drag link & bend it in a press to get the wheel to point correctly either at 12 o'clock or 3 & 9 position depending on how the wheel was made !! BARBARIC , yet that's the way it was done !! that's why you get in a old truck, and even though the front end was tight guys wouldn't take the time , just to get the wheel position correct !! RIDING HEIGHT , aka = new springs vs. old springs , would change the static position of the steering wheel as well !! AJUSTABLE - DRAG - LINK , " HOW - SIMPLE - YET - HOW - HARD " ????? KEEP UP THE GREAT VIDEOS , 2 THUMBS UP !!!!!!! THE MACK GUY

Another wonderful maintenance video. On manual steering tightness, my understanding from years ago is that mfg's left a little play in the steering to avoid abrupt immediate steering from hitting bumps or when a driver may unintentionally turn or veer from other minor causes like reaching and even shifting. It was a failsafe thing. My great uncle and my Grandfather were mechanics way back then. Of course, roads were not like todays.
@ModelA

Correct. Model A steering also has just a small amount of play as a rule. Same reasons. I like mine really tight.

Hi there! Pickups are perhaps the tightest interiors of all the body styles. Especially 28/29 models. You won't be very comfortable in one. Try a coupe (30-31) if you want to have some room. Pickups are fun, but not when you're tall or long-legged.

Thanks for another interesting video. I am contemplating an adjustable drag link. By my measurements, I could probably do with a 5/8th inch shorter drag link to center my sector shaft/steering wheel. I was hoping you could add more details left out in your video: 1. What ended up being the difference in measured length of your drag links pre and post. 2. From steering wheel centered, how much travel does your steering wheel have going to the right full travel stop (the stop bolt on the king pin) with everything hooked up (on jack stands), and how much travel going to the full left stop? Just curious.

@@ModelA sorry to "drag" this out, but "minus 1/4 turn of the wheel" isn't making sense. My question is, with steering wheel centered, how many turns of the wheel does it take to go full right, and conversely, full left. For example, on my current setup, it takes 1 and 3/4 turns to go full left, and only 1 and 1/8 turn to go full right.....an adjustable drag link should patch this up for me..
This is out of context. Paul, This is Don of "Don's Old Garage" on KZread. I've watched your videos on timing the Model A. They are great. Here is my question, I'm working on a 1933 Chevrolet 5 window coupe. And I know you are a Ford Guy. I wish my Chevy was as easy to time as your Model A. Do you have any suggestions? I've watched many KZread videos, manuals, etc. The Chevy has a marking on the flywheel that shows Top dead center, and It can be checked by putting ones finger over the spark plug hole and feeling for compression. also one can check you noticing the lifter positioning. And from that point you start to set the distributor, i.e. the rotor is pointing to #1etc. with all this I still don't feel secure with the setting. Maybe you may know some Chevy Guy who could give me suggestions. Thanks again. I always enjoy watching you videos, even though I'm a Chevy Guy at the moment.
