Another great, helpful video, Paul. Thanks for sharing. In a future version of it, or in a future Q&A, I think it would be helpful for Model A owners to understand how often they should check and adjust this Free Play, does the Free Play get bigger or smaller as the car is driven and the clutch wears, and what are the consequences of failing to adjust it when needed.

This job of clutch free play adjustment on the Ford Model A was an adjustment that had to be made occasionally on all manual transmission cars with the procedure differing on the make and model of car. It is likely that this video is the first time some young people have ever heard about a clutch free play adjustment. Since I was born in 1951 and my parents had manual transmission cars and I once owned a manual transmission cars I am familiar with clutch free play adjustment.

Many manual transmission big rigs still require adjustment. Procedure is easy despite their size. With clutch depressed, there is a bolt with a spring loaded sleeve on the clutch plate itself. Just reach up through the inspection cover and turn it as needed. 1 1/2" is just about right for them. It is funny how pretty much all clutches have the same general idea on Freeplay and how to adjust.
Tack!

The state doe have some tough laws, but itis the counties that add more laws on top of the state laws that make it unbearable in some places. Luckily, I live in one of, if not the most, conservative county in tue state. The county does not add its own laws. Therefore, if you live in my county, and the vehicle is 1974 or newer, you have to get it smogged when you purchase it only. Never again. Since my cars are pre-1974, no smog required at purchase or ever. With that said, I have had a Model A on a smog machine and they are surprisingly clean.

Good day Mr. Shinn, I followed your clutch adjustment on both of my cars. Having said that, I just bought a 1930 Standard Coupe' that was restored many years ago but only has just over 1400 mile on it. My truck worked perfectly after the adjustment but the coupe' gears keep grinding when I try to shift. I have done the double clutching and tried at different speeds but it is like I have no clutch at all. I went further and moved the adjustment more turns up but that just made the clutch slip all the time. I sure would appreciate any advice you might be able to pass on to me even though I know it's hard when you are not here to see the car. I have been in Model A's for over fifty years and this is the firs time I have run across this. Many thanks, Clinton

@ModelA
Жыл бұрын
Hey Clinton, Glad to help. The clutch being heavy means something is not right, binding, or in need of lubrication. Or, maybe you're used to the V8 clutch? You need someone familiar with stock Model As to check out your car. With a new clutch, the clutch should start to grab just a little after the half-way point. With a good clutch that has some miles on it, grab starts about the half-way point in travel. With a worn out clutch, it starts to grab right off the floor. All the best!

Paul, what ya' know about '29 Packard clutch adjustment? I've been on every forum on the web with no help. Restored '29 633 Club Sedan, about 1,800 miles on it since a ground-up resto done by a professional classic shop in Minnesota (I'm in Louisiana, bought the car two years ago), I've never been able to get the clutch in a happy place. The clutch pedal feels like a dead fish, clutch engages when the pedal is about 3" off the toe board, you've gotta' put it on the floor to shift. I used to drive these things all the time (and Model A's), never had one act like this. Have tried messing with the adjusting rod endlessly, no matter where I put it, this is all I get. Is it possible they put the lever to the fork to the throwout bearing on in the wrong position? Can't find anyone else that will send me a photo of theirs. Your videos are fantastic, I grew up with Model A's. Thanks much!

Paul you shouldn't have revealed the fact that you are using UAV footage that you made. It appears that your UAV may be under the 250 gramm limit and you're flying indoors and you wouldn't have to register it with the FAA. BUT since you have received monetary compensation the FAA considers you are using the UAV (UNMANNED AIRIAL VEHICLE) in the furtherance of a business. Stupid I know but the FAA has screwed up the whole rc modeling hobby ! Since that has occurred you are now breaking the law! You are required to get a part 107 pilots license! And may have to register the UAV (Drone) even though you were flying indoors and definitely if you fly outdoors. Very sad.

Thank you for sharing. I figured this comment would come up eventually. I am a patriotic American who opposes the trendy shift to socialism and oppression. I would rather die than give in to the new socialist FAA rules for flying model aircraft. That's why I quit the AMA after many decades as a member. If the FAA wants to come on my property and pull their "I'm the government, bow before me and respect my authority" garbage, they are in for a big fight. I have been flying Model airplanes for 50 years. If they think they can stop me, let them try. Those commies can go pound sand. They have no idea how hard I will fight.
