Fields & McHugh are one of my favorite teams of the early Depression. I must believe that the optimism and happy mood in their songs was a ray of sunshine for the folks of the day who were dealing with hard times. Well, anyway their numbers affect this listener that way. Smith's clear, earnest delivery is ideal for this sweet number.

Speaking of Dorothy Fields, I thought of one of her lesser-known songs last week, when a cold snap had my veggie patches and raised garden beds snowed in, which I'd just built in the sunny 70s the week before. _April Fooled Me,_ a collaboration with Jerome Kern, well, sort of, as she added the evocative lyrics a decade after the master's death. The song was once introduced to me by Mark Murphy, and I had to think of him, too. I started to miss him, and in order to chase the looming blues away I played Bird's _Leap Frog,_ and I know that you know *why,* no fooling.

@@henridelagardere264 "April Fooled Me" is very poignant. Dorothy wasn't always a wise guy, slinging the slang. ... 'Course! -- I know _exactly_ why! Bird's harmonic structure sources never fail to amuse me.
