London 1929: Two foxtrots by Will Perry's Dance Orchestra

Музыка

Will Perry’s Orchestra with Vocal Refrain, Parlophone 1929 (UK):
1. If I Had You, Fox-Trot (Shapiro-Campbell-Connelly)
2. I’m Crazy Over You, Fox-Trot (Sherman-Lewis)
NOTE: I have no idea who Will Perry was and where his band was active: in the US or in the UK. His recordings appear just as well on American Okeh label and this British record may be an American matrix release. Nor can it be ruled out that Will Perry was originally a London Westend band, who knows. In any case, the orchestration is fabulous and captures the whole spirit and vibe of British Jazz Age bands. Absolutely deserves to be presented in a double edition, enjoy!!!

Love this so much. This era of music is all i listen to now. From about 1910-1948. What more does one need? 🎼🎶

This music precedes my existence, however I am still very much enamored by it. I am well into my eighties and still enjoy it.

Yes, the last comment is correct and it is Sam Lanin with Bing Crosby recorded 25.01.1929. I found it in Rust American Dance Band discography.

Thank you for your persistent search and final verdict. Lanin & Bing Crosby - sounds great. Although in 1929 Crosby was already a well-known soloist in the US and singing for Sam Lanin, moreover anonymous was not something he urgently needed for his career. So maybe - money?

I agree with the previous commenter. Love this kind of music. I have several ‘78’s, pull one out occasionally, learn the songs on it. ‘Marie’ is a big favorite, also ‘In the Mood’ with words. Heard about a woman whose parents only played 40’s music as if it were current. As she grew older, they told her what they had done. She didn’t know what to think about that trick.🤗😊

Brian Rust's British Dance Band discography shows that it is a pseudonym for Ronnie Munro Orchestra, for Arthur Rosebery and his Band and for various bands on American Okeh masters. Parlophone 6147 and 6150 (recorded 25 + 26.03.1929) are by Ronnie Munro and therefore I assume your 6148 is as well by Munro (but not listed by Rust).

To my ear that voice did sound familiar too and I had the thought perhaps it was Bing, but then there was another thought, where did he come from on the English disk?

I have the feeling this recording was not released in London until the Depression. I think Parlophone was a British discount label. We did the same thing here in America. Originally this was a Columbia record. I'm sure these recordings could be had for a quarter on some of discount labels in the 5 and 10 between 1931 and 1938.

Indeed, this record has "nothing to do with London in 1929" - except for the minor fact that this album was pressed, released and distributed in the UK in 1929.

@@240252 Yes. I don't know why Parlophone/Columbia in London didn't give the correct band name on the label, but there might have been financial reasons for the deception :-)
