London 1928: The Rhythmic Eight (Bert Firman's Dance Orch.) - Dusky Stevedore

The Rhythmic Eight (Bert Firman’s Dance Orchestra) - Dusky Stevedore, Fox-Trot (Razaf / J.C.Johnson), Zonophone
NOTE: This fox-trot was a great dance & jazz hit written in 1928 by two well-known „black” American authors: the lyricist Andy Razaf and pianist J.C. Johnson: a couple well remembered also by such hits as „Louisiana”, „Black Maria” or „The Joint Is Jumpin’”, the last one made one of ID tunes by the famous jazz pianist Fats Waaller. Here, „Dusky Stevedore” is performed by the renowned Zonophone house band The Rhythmic Eight. It was one of aliases used by the British bandleader, violinist and composer Bert Firman. Other were The Arcadians Dance Orchestra, The Devonshire Restaurant Orchestra or the Midnight Follies. Since 1924 Bert Firman held position of the musical director for Zonophone Records (a subsidiary of HMV) where he often recorded American dance hits and jazz in sophisticated arrangements. His band included several very good European jazz musicians such as Arthur Lally, John Firman, Jack Jackson or Frank Guerente. In 1930 Bert Firman went to the USA at a six-month contract to be a guest conductor at N.B.C., becoming the first British bandleader to broadcast in America. He then spent some time in Hollywood adding music to a large number of films. After the 2nd WW Bert Firman played in Paris, at the Bagatelle Club and his band included Stephane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt.
The slideshow presents some pre-war advertising posters of the British holiday resorts.

No niestety, już za parę dni, za dni parę będziemy śpiewali "a mnie jest szkoda lata"...
This is probably my favorite U-Tube channel. What a treasure cave. Superb taste in both the musical and visual selection. Many sincere thanks to the curator(s).
What gorgeously reproduced images. And a delightful recording!
Great combination: A swell song I've never heard before and some beautifully evocative illustrations to enjoy. Thank you!
I liked the railroad posters.

Dziękuję, pozdrawiam :-)
One of my favorite songs from my favorite year of musical output. I have two other versions with vocals that pale in comparison with this arrangement and personnel in general. The sax/reeds are wonderful as is the rest of the band. Who is on bass sax? Could it be? Thanks for a really great dance number. I'll have to check Rust to see who is who...

I see that Art Lally played 'bar sax'. I thought it may be Spencer Clark who was in England that year as near as I can tell. He is new to me and I'm very happy to run across him, very talented on the reeds.
