1930 Ford Model A - Part V - Not The Voyage Home

* Narrations only at 00:15, 13:15 & 15:12.
Today, we attempt to pull the Model A from where it has rested for well over 60 years. Nothing is free, nothing is turning, and nothing is out of the way.
We battle trash piles, trees, fence posts, well caps, wet ground, leaves, hill sides, and everything and anything that could be in the way to make for an easy removal. Every time we tried to get a good pull, we ended up in another obstacle to work around. Now, we pause for reflection to reasses and wish we had a heavy duty winch and a large snatch block to make the recovery a lot easier.
Now, Part V, and hopfully better than Leonard Part 6...
Thanks for watching.

    Yea the old girl don't want to come out of retirement. Probably afraid it will have to work as hard as it did before. All said the ski idea makes the most since. Its not a heavy car. Its just sat for 60 years. In the mean time trees and junk have a cumulated around her. If you use boards or plywood. I myself would take advantage of it having spoke wheels and run a small ratchet strap through the wheels to you're boards! So they will stay with the car. Also just an idea. Old junk car hoods make really good skies. I use to use one off a old ford truck when I was cleaning up the yard and pulled it behind the mower. I also used one as a sled as a kid! They slide really good!!

    Thank you, I eventually tried the ski idea and secured the wheels as you mentioned. My downfall was not cutting an angle on the planks as they too just would dig into the ground. In a follow-up video, we used a wrecker, and even it had problems loading the car, as it simply did not want to leave!

    In deed! We were a bit disapointed that we were unable to get it into a postion to load onto a trailer. You just could not imagine all of the things that were constantly in the way at literally every turn. The car had sunk to the axles and everything was frozen. The wheels just kept plowing into the dirt and just became an anchor. When we revisit this, I think we will make some type of skids for under the wheels.

    @@duginvirginia5737 You need to rent or borrow some tools to remove those brake drums from their axels. Once you pull the drums off (with a tool similar to a gear puller), remove the brake hardware and replace the drums and wheels. You may end up "torching" that stuff off which would mean needing replacements for "rollers".

    @@duginvirginia5737 Just trying to help. Watch this kind of thing and wish I was there helping. My thinking, you're going to do what I'm suggesting after you fight the entire loading process when you get this thing back home anyway. Why not approach it there when it can make the entire transport/loading process so much easier and more pleasant/fun.

    Wow, maybe a shorter chain on that rear-end would have walked it out of the woods , you know a horse can pull a bag of feed around all day but if you put it on a 100 foot rope it ties the horse in place 😉

    Thank you for the suggestion. On the return trip, I did use a shorter chain and it was the same thing, just one big anchor. Even using some wood planks like a set of skies, it still dug in. Interestingly enough, even the tow truck had issues recovering this!

    I live in Virginia and work on Model A projects out in the middle of nowhere, built one from parts into a truck. Your coupe/truck looks good and you should be able to get it running and driving if the valves aren't too bad. Let me know if you need any input on things, the head will be hard to remove if you go that route. Don't worry about the pulley, they break, just cast iron. There is a good parts swap meet in Luray, in April or May.
