One has to wonder how they came up with that keyboard layout. It almost certainly was not random, and was based on some sort of study. But I'd expect the most common letters to center around some convenient spot, and that didn't appear to be the case.

It seems to have been designed with some common words in mind. Notice the words AND, PLEAS(E), THE, RING, CUT.

It was certainly easy to find the characters after a few attempts.

Q and U are not well placed with respect to each other. Yet other sequences are. Seems a bit random.

I actually looked this up in high-school once and learned that the more common letters were expressly placed in more inconvenient locations to give the typewriter mechanism time to reset before the person typing could input their next letter, this prevented jamming. The standard qwerty layout just stayed basically standard, but there are other more optimized layouts for modern digital keyboards with the most common characters in more convenient locations and those permit for noticeably faster words per minute at the expense of relearning how to type

@@LavaDonuts Well that's true, but notice this typewriter doesn't have a QUERTY keyboard, and doesn't have any problem with mechanism interactions that will reduce speed. It's just plain slow. My question was how _this_ layout came about.

One of my favorites to use. It’s easy to find the characters with little practice.

It's neat trying to figure it all out. I'm guessing you ink the pad visible when you type the ! and the letters run over it, picking it up. I see the spring ball on the right, and the bell in the middle - guessing it dings when the carriage moves over far enough.

Yup, you got it. I have another video using a different world typewriter and you can hear the bell right at the end.

Love this video. I have a chance to buy one. Did you make the rubber pad? Is there any info about the rubber pad anywhere?

Google Martin Howard’s typewriter collection and you will find more information about the history of this typewriter. He does a great job highlighting some of the earliest typewriters in history. My videos are more demonstrational.
