Always nice to see numbers over what is claimed. Until your channel I was ALWAYS under the impression that ammo mfg fluffed the numbers.

Thanks for that, it's a great compliment and exactly what I was hoping to accomplish with the channel. I have a Shout out to you and Gun Sam coming in one of the uploads tonight. I think it's the A17 Ammunition Review. Yeah so many factors go into bullet velocity that there's no way a manufacturer could ever know what it gets. two guns that are the exact same models could have burrs in the barrel or chamber that cause something to go haywire with the speed. It may also be that my shorter barrel at 18", causes less friction when the powder runs out, that powder is probably burned in 16" or less so in a 24" Marlin Heavy Barrel you'd probably get more accuracy, but less velocity because the friction in the barrel is slowing it down more than air ever could.

You're welcome. I sold that gun for accuracy issues but it was fun

Use to run the 20gr xtp when they first came out in my 17hmr. Had a savage 93R17GV great shooting gun shoot dime size 👌 groups. But didnt care for it in the woods hunting. So sold off to my DAD. Very finicky with crosswinds and hit gray squirrel one time little back behind shoulder and didnt kill it on impact. hollowpoint never open up. 17gr vmax never great out of this gun for me. But dad said he's been getting ok groups on calm days.

I’m in the process of getting a Savage 93 in .17HMR, already have one in .22WMR and it’s a great little rifle, more accurate than I am. The 20gr loads for the .17 didn’t make a lot of sense until I seen the XTP get very good penetration for its size, it’s no .22WMR but seems like a great little hunting round, glad to know it’s above advertised velocity

Just know that that rifle shot everything above advertised velocity with an 18in barrel. I think the flash hider I added caused some back pressure to increase velocity, as rounds shot closer to the box velocity when I took it off. Be careful with the .17 as any little bit of wind with blow that bullet around.

I realize I'm 3 years too late but XTP stands for "Extreme Terminal Performance".

No wonder a lot of those Australian hunters use 17hmr with the 20g XTP for taking out foxes with great effect. Still supersonic at 200yds. I will need to try some in my t1x although i have had great results with the 17g v max against crows and fox here in not so sunny Scotland. Ps great video.

Real world testing shows they really shine.. more velocity than listed on the box and I’m calculating a BC of .184.. just what my data says assuming my chronograph is accurate which I’m 99% sure it is.

That's a switch for the 'advertised' fps to be less than actual; I'm impressed with this ammunition. Have you done Chrony. testing on .22 Magnum? I'd like to see this too.

Reg Sparkes I have not tested the 22 magnum yet. I would like to know that ammunition is more available, but I don't have a 22 magnum. Though I may sell the 17 and get one since this one isn't extremely accurate, and the place is on tops of the mountains where I'd hunt Ptarmigan in the winter are very cold and windy really affecting the 17in HMR past 50 yards

I'm trying to make up my mind and buy another 17HMR rifle. I already have a Savage 93R17 with a heavy barrel, and so far, it puts the bullets pretty well where I aim, i.e. 1.5 inch groups. ( I am not the best shooter in the world, lord knows!) I am in Newfoundland & Labrador, actually the Newfoundland island part of the province. Mostly I just target shoot and some plinking too, but I just love guns and this is a great hobby for me. I do have a .22 Mag. in rifle and revolver. so far here, finding this ammo. is relatively easy, for me, although more costly than .22LR by a long shot ( no pun intended.) I have heard that the 17 HMR 'pill' is easily deflected by cross winds, and with that in mind, I do understand your thinking. Thanks for the reply, and as I have just subscribed, I'll be watching to see what you have next. Cheers, and all the best too!

Reg Sparkes thank you for subscribing! I plan on a lot of things, not all of them work out sometimes. Next I'll be doing an AR-15 lap m855 ball comparison. Please share with gun friends!
