Good test! As I shoot .22 mag (Ruger Precision) I'm always interested. Usually I prefer the 10% ordance gel because my favorite bullets (Lehigh Extreme Defender) for EDC don't seem to do very well in the clear ballistics, and they are much more dramatic in the 10% blocks. But I like that you use both since it gives a comparison. I suppose eventually someone will do a big shoot out using both but until then... keep up the great work! Cheers, jc

I got both 17HMR and 22WMR game points and out of my rifles, 93R17 and 93G they react great against live targets and have exceptional accuracy. The 17 I can put 5 20gr rounds in the same hole at 50yds, the 22WMR I can put 5 almost touching, if not touching, at 50yds all day every day. Great rounds and generally affordable.

The FBI uses the 10% ordnance gel, so those results will be more comparable to the FBI's penetration standards. Some people use the Clear Ballistics gel primarily because it's easier to work with and see through the gel. And those are temporary stretch cavities (TSC), not permanent wounds. The only way to turn TSCs into permanent wounds at those velocities is if there's fragmentation throughout. Just losing the jacket may cause one short additional wound, but it won't promote tearing of tissue in the entire TSC.

Real meat is much more softer than the brown blocks. I will say they they do show what a bullet will do better than the clear blocks. I’ve see tests done on pork shoulders, hams, and ribs and will say and will say that many cartridges have surprised me.

I wonder is there something really wrong with those 22wmr bullets. With test material we have now we can somehow get the idea how those will only expand when shot point blank. If clear gelatin show us a problems with that close then i wonder how bad it must be in 100 yards what is far more likely distance what is used to shot game animals. Now 22wmr is giving handicap to 17hmr because unreliable power transfer.

Just for an example, I have noticed from my previous tests that a lot of .22lr HP ammo won't expand even in the brown gel if velocities drop much below 1000fps- that's pretty much any short barrel pistol. This means that even from a rifle, by 50 yards expansion is already questionable. One might think this is where .22 Magnum might shine, thinking that you can get expansion reliably to 100 yards due to the extra velocity. However, magnums are actually copper plated, whereas .22lr is only copper dusted. This makes a big difference, as the plating or "jacket" is much stronger and thus harder to get to expand than just copper dusted lead. But that's why I'm going to be doing 50 & 100 yard testing soon as well...

@@BuckeyeBallistics It would be really nice to see how those v-max and gamepoints act in more typical range. Personally i dont see much point in 5-20 yard gelatin tests because it is bit too much off from real/typical situation. Any caliber in that close should get job done if ammo is not faulty. But this time that test already revealed that problem. Last summer i used 17hmr to pop half liter soda bottles and clay pidgeons from 250meters(273yard). Not too sure how much there is energy left because i could actually see bullets from scope before those hit targets. But still enought energy to penerated those water filled bottles with inch wide back hole and were buried inside of tree trunk behind. 200 yard gel test would be bit too much to ask but i will leave that as suggestion for future. Thx from actually informative content.

Well about the only point for the close range tests is if in case you would use it for home defense, which some might/do. Matter of fact, if a car full of thugs pull up on my house (unlikely) and the rest of my family is home, one of them is getting handed the semi auto magnum with the red dot on it for backup incase I get hit leading with my AR. So, for such situations, it's at least interesting to see what these rounds do close range. I used to shoot birds out 200-225 yards with my .17, and the birds would still "pop" pretty good, meaning that the bullets were still expanding to some extent (the 20gr gamepoints). The 17gr ballistic tips didn't hit as hard at those ranges though, so I'm not sure if they were expanding any or not at that distance. Also one day I shot some water filled gallon milk jugs at 365 yards to see if I could hit them, and I found one of the projectiles inside of one of the jugs (17gr ballistic tip) not expanded at all. Of course, this is way beyond the distance those were ever meant to be practical for lol. I would like to see 200 yard results as well, and I could definately do it. The only reason I have been saying in this series that I can't promise it is because I have to be at the range on a day where there is nobody else there to get rifle range gel tests done, which means going when the weather is freezing (as I've been doing). But I'm doing 50 & 100 yards first, so it might be spring before I get all those done so I might not have the range to myself again until early next year. Eventually I'll probably get it done though- I plan to do centerfire rifles at even longer ranges eventually too. This would be a lot easier if my channel would explode already so I can go buy my own property for this kind of stuff lol. Slowly but surely, maybe one day; I'm getting there.

@@BuckeyeBallistics I think the 200 yard test isn’t really necessary. In my opinion the ideal range for testing both of these rounds is 100 yards. A vast majority of shots will be within that range . I think a Coyote is pretty much the largest game animal most people ever use either caliber on on the law abiding side of things and 100 yards is at the max range for 17HMR body shots on yotes from what I’ve been reading in forums.
