17-Year Old BMW Attempts Engineer Pass Fully Loaded

During my Trans America Trail Trip this summer I attempted Engineer Pass in Colorado on my 2004 BMW GS Adventure motorcycle with fully loaded cases. I know there are many folks who might be curious how this setup might go...I sure was, especially with a leaking fork seal, balding tires and a rider with a bruised knee and little experience on mountains.
I hope you enjoy and get something out of this video to inspire your own adventures. I am currently in Africa with my GS. Subscribe for more motorcycle tips and inspiration.

    I rode my 95 BMW R 1100 GS over a lot of passes in Colorado. It was heavy, compared to the Husky I have now, but she was a real pack mule!

    Thanks Barry...green with envy lol! I've been there many times (from a damned cubicle on the grind). Wow, Scotland NC500 looks really cool. I'll have to add that to my bucket list. Did you rent a bike or are you from around there?

    Great job! Those 2 corners are more difficult than you made it look, nice riding! And the place where your video ends is known as the 'Oh Point'. If you've been there, you know why. It's like standing on top of the world. You rode across the 'saddle' to get there. I look forward to watching more.

    Thanks so much fire ball! You are right about those few corners...you gotta concentrate. Yep, 'Oh Point'...I actually ended the video down the hill a bit on my way to Silverton...I took a left turn too soon but in my next video you'll see my correction. Thanks so much for watching and jumping on board!

    Hi Lee, excellent video ! beautiful shots and images! We did this trip almost at the same time as you (September 2021), I'm also 47 and twisted my knee in Mississippi "MS 04 of Sams GPS tracks". I said it cant be possible what a coincidence ! I'll look for you in IG so we can get in contact.

    Wow Arturo, what a coincidence! My twisted knee happend on the Santa Fe trail section...right as you've ended the long white gravel, dipped down to the ranch...and as I came up into a big mud puddle...put my foot down. Too much weight for one knee. I'm still nursing it a little but is a battle scar worth having. OK find me on IG or facebook as Lee Kandlbinder...be glad to connect. Thanks again.

    Wow! I did a bit over 100K miles between 2 BMW GS's 11 and 1150's But when I did the Colorado mountain passes it was on a 2000 KLR. My hat is off to you big time. The TAT started in Central Miss in 1999 and 2000 when I did it starting with a DR350SE and from Arkansas to the finish with a 2000 KLR.

    Wow right back at you Andrus! 100K is a lot of riding but I love your bike choices...switching up for the mountain passes was smart too. If I could have a trailer following me with five bikes around America, the KLR and a DR would be on it lol. Thanks for watching!

    Why thank you sir! I'm no expert and it definitely helped that I had great weather....this was mid-August around 8am or 9am on a weekend...my strategy paid off (to get up early before the hungover side-by-side crowd even woke). Thanks again for watching and the kind words!

    Great video! Now I’m confident I can pull it off on my Vstrom. I was a little concerned about my ground clearance. Hopefully my day will be as beautiful as yours was . How is it into silverton?

  • @lkandlbinder

    @lkandlbinder

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Russ! Yes you can do it on your Vstrom. Clearance won't be a problem but just have a bash plate on for the rocks that kick up. If you watch the next video I posted, 'Down Engineer Pass' you'll get a good idea of how the trail looks down to Silverton. I mention that I wouldn't do it if it'd been raining because of mud. Thanks again for watching!

    There are some spots with large loose rocks going up, don't change course mid-stream, best to just go over what's in front of you. Best of luck. Silverton- things open late and close early
