kevin weithers hah, thanks. these projects can seem intimidating but thankfully with helpful family, friends and tons of information available online i think anyone with ambition, some power tools, and a nearby home depot can create a room like this.

@@aaromon43 I think the PSA make the most accurate speakers for a home theatre I had a JBL Synthesis 2 and have tried many expensive reference systems and my favourites are the PSA MT210 for LCR and MT110 SR for the 8 others and a pair of sealed 18's and speakers done.

Hey Jonathan, congrats on the DIY. Looking good. I know the LCR speakers you use are 15” deep. Do they have rear ports? If so, how much space did you leave between the back of the speaker and your masonry wall? Have you noticed a difference in sound with them closer to the wall?

Anthony Bento the psa towers are sealed, not ported. They are right up against the xps foam.

Hey jonathan, Your projection looks awesome. I am planning to build my own screen. Which screen do you recommend a dark one or white one? Regarding speakers I am confused between Fluance signature series, Emotiva t2, Martin Logan motion 20. Compared to price fluance and emotiva are on budget side but looking for a opinion from you guys

geethakrishna kuchipudi if you're looking to build a similar acoustic-transparent screen, you should go with white over black for the best contrast. only do this if you are in a light controlled room however because the screen gain measures about 0.6 (much lower than your standard ~1.0 gain screens). i don't have much to offer in the way of speaker recommendations--that is a very deep rabbit hole my friend. i spent a lot of time figuring out the same problem! my psa speakers for example i think are outstanding for watching movies. they are okay for music (typical with horn tweeters). movies were my priority and that's the way i went. if i were setting up a 2 channel stereo system for strictly music, i would have went with a pair of ascend acoustic sierra towers with RAAL ribbon tweeters. good luck with your build!

His PSA speakers are sealed. Jonathan did you consider PSA subs? Your room is small and sealed you could get single digit extension with sealed via S7201’s or quad S3601. Are you going to lower the surrounds some when you re locate them to comply with the new Atmos standard. As always awesome work love following your build. Wish you were closer to Northern Va.

Excellent setup. You are really inspiration to all DIYers. I have few questions about the screen height. In the video you mentioned you reduced the height from 71 inches to 68 inches and you built the screen to 121" width and 68" height for the screen. Did you notice any problems with the screen when you stretched the 58inch spandex to 68" screen height +4/5 inches for wrapping around the frame and stapling. On the AVS forums they recommended not to stretch the spandex more than 10%. If we go with the 10% calculation, you should not stretch beyond 64 inches so that means you can build only screen height of 60 inches max. In later video when you built the 2.39:1 ratio screen you used 57"inch screen. Did you notice any difference in picture quality between the two screens ? Would recommend stretching the 58" inch spandex to (68 inches screen height + 4 inches=72 inches total) or is it safe to stay within 10% recommended on the forums. I know that spandex world offers 120 inch material and you used that in your current setup. The 120inch is not currently in stock so I got the 58inch so I wanted to know what is the max screen height I could build with it without degrading the picture quality.

first of all, thanks! i'm glad i can inspire others to try their hand at diy home theater. second, i no longer have the screen in this video. i now use a 157" 16:9 screen (the largest possible size i could fit against the wall), and have created 2.39 black velvet masking panels for the best scope image possible. re: the quality of materials used... the 60" tall spandex from spandex world is the best i've used so far, hands down. i used that for both my 140" 16:9 screen and the 147" scope screen. i then moved to the 120" tall rosebrand material for the 157" screen and it was plagued with problems. i've since moved to the 120" tall spandexworld material (it's much thicker than the 60" tall, and has a different texture). it's not quite as good as the 60" tall but it's really close. i'm extremely happy with picture quality again. hope that helps!

punch in the screen size you want on displaywars.com and it will show you the exact width & height you need for any size screen with any aspect ratio. a lot has changed since this specific video and i'm now using a 155" full-wall 16:9 screen.

Hey cool, I'm doing a projection home cinema also ( still in plannng and equipment collection/aquisition stage. I'm rockkin fluance speakers too. want to eventually get another 5.0 classic set so have 3 identical towers for left, right, center got a smaller discontinued pair of fluance bipolars for my atmos ceiling speakers. Looking into different sources for spandex screen ( ebay has "DJ" spandex screens in white that range from 120" to 160" diag that are streched out in a funny star shape with bungis no frame got a 120" inch on for $19.00) if I can find a cheap source for wide rolls of speaker cloth I'll use it to cover my walls. Best priced pure copper wire for speakers I found was 14guage in wall wire want 12 guage but the rolls Iordered from amazon weren't really 12 guage. should have known by the price but hoped I found once in a lifetime deal. Got two BenQ 3D DLP projectors off ebay auction for $49.00 each (big score) who knew I would win Both auctions with such a low bid, now I have a backup.

brianr101010 everyone over on avsforum is mostly in agreement that the matt miliskin product that spandexworld offers is the best material for the money. i started to research other brands but didn't have time to fall into that rabbit hole and just went with the masses on that purchase and i have no regrets. i can't find any type of flaw with the spandex (no hot-spotting, sparkling, sharpness or color problems that some of my other screens had). and wow, that's a heck of a deal on those 2 projectors. maybe you can stack them and get 2x the lumens ;)

Hi! I am planning a very similar build. I was wondering what you found to be the maximum height you could stretch the milliskin spandex material to? Thanks for any help you can offer!

  • @aaromon43

Hendrik Sy if you venture over to the avsforum and look for user mississippiman and scroll through his post history (he seems to be by far the most knowledgeable person over there regarding spandex screen builds) his stance on the 60" wide spandex states that it can stretch about 10%, and that you really don't want to go beyond that (so ~66"). i think the height of my screen turned out to be 68" which is right on the edge before you over-stretch the material and open the weave which you don't want--been there done that.
