This is what i've been considering for my next major upgrade. CIH for 2.39 and 16:9, but also have an option to open up that same large degree screen as 16:9 for an "IMAX" screen. This video is exactly what i've been looking for to get more ideas to implement. Awesome!

even the best projectors can't do inky black currently so it's definitely something worth doing for now. maybe one day in the future it won't be needed though!

I can not do a CIH screen due to immersion, I will have 16:9 content a lot of the time and the idea of a 150" CIH and a 113" 16:9 sounds awful. Currently I am planning on building a 138"x70" screen so I will have a 150" scope and a 143" 16:9. I would do taller for a bigger 16:9 but I don't think the rear row will see the bottom of the screen ha. I will have to play around a bit after the stage is built. 4 way masking is a must, I am not sure if I have the know how to automate it, I may just make manual masking panels.

lets say that you play an imax blu ray of the dark knight, can you see the black bars on the 2:39:1 sequences?

Awesome work! That masking system is fantastic. The new dune movie at home in IMAX… hell yeah. Something tells me there’s a shortage of black velvet in your home state lol Where are you buying from?

hah! i have grabbed multiple rolls from amazon, this is the stuff here (although the price is a lot higher now, but so is everything unfortunately). probably have like 4-5 rolls worth in the room LOL www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EEJSG90

Do you have a video actually showing you adhere the velvet to the walls? What kind of adhesive did you use and did it bleed through the velvet? Thanks!

What happens when watching variable aspect ratio content/ movies? E.g Guardians of the galaxy, Interstellar etc.

i either leave the screen open in small 16:9 or large 16:9 (usually the later), or i can run scope and force a 2.39 crop for the entire movie. plenty of "imax" footage is very watchable this way, sometimes improved even keeping the entire film scope vs having random scenes that are taller.

What is the room height

The NZ8 would be an epic upgrade and a huge jump. At some point I plan to move to a JVC PJ but for now I'm going to keep chugging along with the 5040UB. What's going on with your rear speakers? It seems like you moved them.

I think he might have a throw distance issue with those projectors if he wants that screen size. I don't remember his room length though, it's worth looking into. I imagine if he is considering it he has looked into that though. The Epsons work better for shorter throw distances. The black bars are a lot darker on the JVC too, I wonder if they'd be dark enough where he wouldn't feel he needs the masking as much.

@@commanderrussels2612 throw distance is 18'. the current NX models don't have enough lumens for the screen i'm using, but the NZ definitely does.

oh right, i made custom stands for them (this past summer) to get them off the rear wall, lowered, and angled better towards the front row. they sound so much better now than they did before. one of these days i'll get matching side & rear psa speakers.. hah. edit - agreed about the projector upgrade. i know it's going to happen, just not sure when. a used NX model is tempting for the savings but i don't want another lamp based projector. the nz feels like an endgame choice for many years to come.

@@aaromon43 I love the idea to get the speakers lowered, angled and on axis to the MLP. I feel like you must remember me as I'm always badgering you about getting those PSA surrounds. I really feel like it would be a good use of money as having those matching (and capable) speakers all around really is a game changer IMO. You just get more of that "bubble" immersive sound. In terms of other upgrade paths what about a new AVR, opening up the possibilities of DIRAC or ARC. Also I know you have velvet all around the room which I love BTW but how about some room treatments? And on the conversation of projectors, I'm not sure you'll ever have an end game projector because of all of the HT AV components PJ's is where change happens the most. I imagine going from a 6050UB to a NX7 would be a huge jump vs going from NX7 to a NZ8 which would I imagine would be better but I'm not sure how much better especially given the cost difference (today) between the two projectors.

@@aaromon43 Nice, that's a great throw distance. I thought the NZ didn't have much more lumens than the NX? I thought it was more about the runtime and durability? I must have read that wrong.

nice work. which screen material are you running? I just bought a 6050 and can't seem to pull the trigger on the screen. deciding between diy 148 16:9 and a seymour xd screen that will run about $1700

120" spandexworld white over black. it's extremely popular and talked about on the DIY screen section of the avsforum. for ~$200 the image it provides is incredible.

yes i do, absolutely love them for home theater duty. for music they're good, but if i were building a dedicated audio/music room i'd look for a warmer speaker. center channel dialogue & movie effects they're 10/10 perfect though, zero regrets.
