its kinda astonishing that there are people in the world that still think that folks working in the 'arts' aren't really working. Shit just look at how hard they work just to get IN. Imagine flying across the world to do a 2-day interview for the chance of just being on the DATAbase. You don't see that level of competition in many other industries.

I'm a scientist and that happens all the time in science too. I find that artists and scientist are similar in that way, in which you not only have to train for years but then you have to be so far up above everyone else in order to one day get a worthwhile job.

well if you're a competitive athlete or artist and you suffer from period pains you'd find ways to rid yourself of that problem or you would just never get to that stage. same with people prone to injury etc. selection makes sure you go no further unless your body is completely reliable.

I imagine that being so highly athletic on the daily would help in immensely reducing pain, since physical activity is usually suggested to assist people experiencing menstrual cramps. If they still cramp up even then, they turn to medication, and if even still after all that they cramp? They'd probably just not have been hired in the first place, 'cause if you have cramps with debilitating pain that completely bypasses meds, you probably wouldn't pass the health check.

Remarkable. And here I thought all Cirque du Soleil circusfolk were either 15th generation genetically bred or imported from some alien planet.

I first came across this word when i was a kid , back in india , reading archie comics ....where they or the pussycats ( another set if characters who had a band ) would perform gigs for extra pocket money , as they were all still highschoolers. Good old days . Sorry if i rambled off .

I come from a modest family. My mother was a teacher and my father managed a gas station. Long story short, we went one year to see them and spent $80 per ticket...a little over $300 for my family. At the time I thought this is crazy to spend that kind of money on one show. Hell, we weren't even in the "good" seats. I left that show thinking we'd just stole those seats and that they could have rightfully charged 2x as much. Flat out amazing.

That's so cool and makes me feel so special !!! :D ps -- I never got in lol but that was one of the funnest auditions of my life! They're highly trained athletes with top performing bodies. Pretty sure doing two shows a day isn't going to kill them, considering they're not doing the entire show, only their piece of it. If they had a regular job they'd be working 8 straight hours every day.

Rose C They work 8+ hours a day, often hours before and hours after their show performances, they're back in training. Everyone deserves to be respected, but these people do put their lives 10+ times a day on the line for our entertainment, and there have been fatal accidents in Cirque.

I've worked with seven shows as a massage therapist to the performers over a period of about twelve years. They have surprisingly few injuries. These folks are in remarkable condition and are constantly training. Two shows in a day is very demanding, but those who have the most difficult parts may not be doing that part twice in one day. People and acts get rotated. It's in Cirque's interest *not* to let performers get injured. One thing I've noticed in working with the performers: they love what they are doing. They are living their dream. I never hear them complain.

As a dancer, trying to stand out in an audition while still following the choreography and trying to do everything perfectly is one of the hardest things you have to do. This looks 1000x more grueling and exhausting than any regular audition for a company, and I cannot imagine the incredible talent and strength these dancers must have. I’m astonished by this. Wow.

No. Not at all. I’m a contortionist that used to do musical theatre and circus is infinitely more demanding. Musical theater is nothing compared to this.

I would rather support this than animal Circus!!

I always tear up when I see things like this because my life has never been that interesting. When I was young, I had no confidence due to horrible people and makes me think of what I could have done. I'll be 50 next year. I'm a widow with a child with Autism. My life is wonderful, I always wonder what if though.

Rebecca-you are a survivor, a widow and a mom of a special needs child. There's no training or safety harness to catch you, but you have obviously landed on your feet. There's a piano teacher of mine that started taking painting classes 2 years ago. She's around 50 years too, never did painting in her life before that but said that you never stop learning. There's an older gentleman that did a speech today at my boyfriend's Toastmasters club (a club program where you work on your public speaking/leadership skills, look them up they're everywhere), around 65 years of age and said that he was there because he wanted to better explain the knowledge he has in a way that's more understandable. My boyfriend's mom had to retire from work early because of a medical condition and now she spends her days volunteering, she loves the community there and you do something beyond helping yourself. What's available is dependant on your region but we're blessed to be in an era where there are so many opportunities to learn and grow for people of all ages. Hope you find one that suits you.

Tell me about it. And they don't even earn that much. Online it says up to 100,000 USD but that's for managers and not performers. Performers (it depends but they) make around 36-50,000 USD which is not much considering these people have trained all their life for this, with all that training taking away from their lives. I used to be in a top ranking cheerleading group (not the American stuff, I am talking hardcore tumbling and constantly throwing people) and now I am only 22 years old but my wrists are messed up.

Bear in mind the many other positives about it though. I'm sure the teamwork and cast chemistry is ridiculous. Sure, the company may be there for the money, but (obviously) the number of people who *get* to do Cirque are very few. You can't take away the experience, and people get paid to do it. You don't have to make $100 grand to be happy; happiness is often determined by other things than cash.

Cirque Du Soleil is so cool but man it must be so hard to even get a spot in that performance. These guys are like the best of the best.

This is like training to be an Olympian......sheer dedication and hard work...because only the VERY BEST in the ENTIRE WORLD, will get a spot on the roster... I love the kind of people it takes to achieve that kind of dream!!

I think it's testament to the plasticity of the brain and power of the spirit that any one person could be so multi-talented, let alone an ongoing troupe of 1300-plus!

As a stage manager seeing such a rigorous and passionate training process is inspiring. To know a troop can be so whimsical and diverse, it’s awe inspiring

I'm so glad I found this documentary. I have always been fascinated by Cirque du Soleil and this truly shows the hard work and physical sacrifices of these athletes.

WOW! I don't think people realize how hard, and long it takes to be casted into a production! This was an amazing documentary and insight to the process of Cirque.

The Olympics are only a dress rehearsal. This is the pinnacle of sport. Great show! I was cheering and laughing and clapping all the way through.

When you realize you're not athletic, and you can't sing, or dance, or entertain in any form...

i studied contorsionist andhand balancing for 8 years in germany, I'm pretty good and few weeks before i wanted to go to an cirque du soleil with some friends who also studied some acrobatics which came from families where the parents won olympic gold often. I got a backbend and now i can't go on with my acrobatics and will never doing high class sport again. its can be the best job on earth but it can turn around in like no time. its a hard business and i cried few times watching this documentary.

It's truly sad what happened to you. I'm very sorry to read that, really. However, if you're willing to see the positive side of it, you probably gained so much experience during your 8 years of athletism that this knowledge cannot disappear. Sometimes life shifts and changes so fast that we have no choice but to adapt to it by modifying our goals and dreams. Perhaps it's a revolution in your worldview that has to take place so you can use your other talents, passion and understanding of the field to make the world a better place! Value what you still have and not what is gone! It can be hard sometimes but we only grow from tough experiences. You have my support! xox

well, I'm a violin maker now and work for the german philharmonie and i actually had a audience with lang lang 3 days ago and I'm pretty good in doing violins. I really believe in destiny and even if you work your while life on reaching your goal and right before you get to reach it you fail it just means it never was meant to be for you to reach it. you just need to be positive and try to listen to your heart and feel what the real goal is. I'm 21 now so I'm pretty young but my goal to work for cirque du soleil was after 8 years of hard work ruined and i stayed positive and now i met the best piano player in the word and spoke to him for 5 minutes bc of my great work so its all about staying postiv.

lol, believe me. its more then you can imagine but they also work their whole life for it and mostly even ruin their bodies for that passion and work the money is juts a small give back for what they pay with their bodies. but you know. you have to work 6 days a week 2 shows per day and you get payed not per show, you get payed for seasons, if you have a solo act you get payed for al future shows in that season. and that means more then 100k

I love cirque du soleil. My uncle was the top security for the co founder Guy Laliberte. My uncle has passed years ago but it always brings a smile to my face knowing he got to see such beauty a lot of times while at work :)

As a performer myself, I have gained so much respect for these people who pursue their dreams as hard as these people here have done. Anything worth having is worth fighting for. I loved this documentary and I hate watching documentaries.

Some would argue humans have taken the place of old school circus animals with this company except most circus animals are retired with dignity. The extensive process to show time is horrific but the final product is simply magnificent and truly displays extreme human physical limits at their finest. It's all happy wonderful until a performer is injured, removed and/or replaced which happens more efficiently than most big business assembly line manufacturers. Contract clauses are just as creative as the shows. The show must go on, it's show business at the end of the day. Overhead is consistent and constant, talent is eager and abundant in that world.

+Charlie Tompkins retired with dignity??? I was in a zoo where they had rescued an elephant from a russian circus. in the circus the elephant had chains around his feet and would be stabbed very time it tried to move. to this day it still won't move for fear for being stabbed. do you call that dignity???

You are absolutely clueless if you think circus animals are retired with dignity. Belittling the suffering of those animals for your weak argument is only a continuation of their exploitation. Maybe the performers in Cirque are treated badly, but they still choose to be there and have the ability to live their own lives.

Stupidest comment I've ever read! One they have the choices the animals don't. Two they don't have trainers hitting them when they get it wrong. Three if they suffered any abuse in the work place they could report it.

I saw the Varekai show like 10 or so years ago.. What an amazing, amazing group of performers! I still remember it like it was yesterday.

I have so much respect for these performers. They have so much tenacity, mental and physical strength that I think is very admirable.

Not only are the artists in this documentary phenomenal--the people who put together this documentary are great. Good job on telling a story, and making sure we knew who mattered. I love it when I find a good documentary on KZread. This one is going on the Top Tens list! :)

My old ballet teacher made an audition for a cirque... her mother flew her to Canada where the training was... she ended up shattering her ankle while doing a trampoline trick. She took up ballet and was the best teacher I ever had

I use to work with cirque du soleil, temporarily as an usher with cirque du soleil amaluna in Boston back in 2014. Boy it was super fun, meeting with the cast and gymnast performing in such a mesmerizing way. Usher had to be ready for certain task that are for safety reasons. One was the final act is the lizard was to juggle 7 balls and one was lit on fire. Some of us had to be on standby to make sure if it falls off the stage, we cover it with a fire blanket. One day it did, I had to cover it with a fire blanket, and manage to prevent the audience to be hurt. In return I got a cirque du soleil cap for my heroic act. Overall it was rewarding experience to watch the show every day. Never a day goes by on the memories working with cirque du soleil.

I have been to their performances and was blown away. These people are no joke.

I’m so happy for all of those who got in to the database! So talented all of them and worked so hard for it!

JUst in awe in pure awe to know behind the scenes of such a talented group of individuals that are pushed to the limits to give us a show for such a short time! Begin so close to these shows I neeed to give these performers my money they deserve this and more!!!

Whoa, 2 of the trainers shown intermittently came to our little show on maui to recoreograph our ground dances and help our aerial routines . These trainers were so inspiring, skilled, keen. It was gruelling but so much fun!

Thank you for the people who put together this documentary and for these unbelievably brave and strong, wildly athletic, talented performers!!!

Wow, it's amazing what they go through, but you can tell they love every moment of it. I will appreciate seeing some of these amazing artists at the shows!

This is so wonderful. This is so special especially during the times we are living though. We need to see beauty, mystic, magic. and people working like family to accomplish goals.

I saw this documentary before I saw my first Cirque show in Las Vegas. It made the show even more amazing given how talented all the performers in that show all were.

I saw my first Cirque Du Soleil show in the Pepsi Center here in Colorado. :D It was soo amazing, I was mesmerized through the whole thing and I took ALL of it in! I was really caught by the hoop and silk dancer. I think silk dancing would be amazing to learn.

One of the most awesome performances I've ever witnessed! I can't wait for the next one!

just saw the Borealis: Holiday show yesterday in Minnesota. Knowing the hard work and preparation, I appreciated the show more. Great job!

Makes me think about this whole policy of database, THEN general training THEN getting a contract. Feels like realy difficult time of struggle, suspension (also financially) and unnecessary stress for those people. Especially for those that had completed general training and left out hanging.

What a wonderful documentary! Thank you for an inside look at what it takes to become a performer in this extraordinary circus production.
