1500 Rounds Update on my $3800 PSA AK74

My wear doesn’t seem as excessive as many other reports. I’m not sure if it’s due to the excessive use of Aftermarket parts or perhaps my early rifle missed the QC issues some of the later rifles had?
Either way this is just a way to justify spending Zero Turn money on a Domestic Palmetto State Armory AK74 Build.
Do I regret it? Kinda sorta but not really. I mean look at her… she is magnificent….
Would I do it again? Yeah I’m not the smartest cookie in the fruit basket.

I gave up and got a ZPAP85 lol. A 5.56, CHF chrome lined 10" barrel, nickel-chrome molly bolt carrier assembly, krinkov style AK that comes with a quad rail and adjustable brace for almost the same price as the stock PSAK74 was a no brainer. I'm honestly really impressed by the lack of wear on your rifle though.

All these nerds acting like Arsenal is a gift from god. Bro we get the arsenal 5.45 rifles are great, but I didn’t buy one when they were cheap and I’m not spending $3k on one, no shot, I can get a much better rifle for that money. I don’t care who makes the damn gun just as long as it works like it should, and psa definitely needs some more work on their 74’s, but heres to hoping that someone can make an affordable 74 type rifle.

EXACTLY! I will always support AMERICAN company’s when I can. I will ALWAYS support entry level company’s that spread the joy of this hobby. Yes there is issues. But I have no problem finding them at this price point ESPECIALLY with their incredible Customer Service. I was buying this expecting it to kick a SLRs ass. I was buying it to have for a fun gun and support an American company doing wonderful things for the 2A community.

I shoulda made videos. Mines north of 5k rounds at this point. Did replace the firing pin. Its been incredibly accurate, to the point ar friends complimented it. Not sure what ammo it likes the best, I just run whatever I can. 99% of the shooting has been suppressed, oss 556k. The wear gt complained about is normal. Never got any worse. Its not that bad to begin with.

Mine has some strange wear that is mostly finish wear but in areas I have not ever seen as being characterized as "common" or typical especially only having mine at 1K. The bolt face and chamber face has a lot of strange finish wear markings that some are thinking is caused by headspace issues. Interestingly a few guys who have had firing pin issues have mentioned a plume of smoking coming out of the gun when the primer was punctured and had a piece of the primer get stuck in the channel. I experienced a plume of smoke that at first seemed odd because it was almost like I fired a black powder gun or something but nothing seemed to happen. I didn't really know what to think of that incident so I just assumed it could have been oil from the mag burning or something as it still had some factory oil on it. But I think the strangest wear was in the ejector channel there is some material missing from the bolt face. Some guys said I was being too nitpicky but I would rather send it in and get fixed now than experience some potentially dangerous failure in the future. I am currently at 23 days into the repair which they average to be about 15, so either there is a lot of issues with my particular gun or they are just backed up with a lot of repairs. I have been pretty happy with it besides this but I will check it out when it gets back and decide what to do with it afterwards.

I bought 2 of these on the initial release. Both have been rebarreled twice. The first time was because the extractor on both was slamming into the barrel cutout. I belive that time they rebarreled, rebolted and replaced the front trunion of the rifles. The second time was almost immediately from getting them back. I took them to the range to test fire them and if successful zero them. While zeroing, I would go to clear the rifle and the rifle was pulling the casing but leaving the projectile in the chamber. It did it to both of them. The gunsmith said that they probably cut the chamber slightly out of spec. I believe that time they rebarreled and rebolted. Got them back from that time and after putting only 160 rounds through the rifles the trunion on one was wearing a lot more than the other. I just sold it. At that point I was tired of putting money down the barrel of these rifles just to have to continue to send them in. I will say the customer service was always nice to me and helpful. I have some of their ak 47's nowhere near any issues like this. Though 2 of the 3 did have firing pin issues right off the bat, but easily fixed.

  • @LarpingSupply

That’s HORRIFIC. Sounds to me like the timing of the barrel and mounting of the trunnion had some pretty serious tolerance stacking issues. After the first issue I feel like it would be more logical to send you a new rifle as replacing press fits parts all those time definitely isn’t logical on a AK platform and %100 could have just compounded the issues. I’m sad to hear about your experiences. I suppose my example is just lucky?

According to other ak professionals like Jim Fuller for instance has noted that the issue is in the front trunnion, you can see that your PSA has a brr on the cam and isn't wearing how a well made trunnion should. If you watch Garand Thumbs review on his PSA AK-74 he covers everything in detail

  • @joshr9730

Wear on the front right trunnion lug is normal , actually, because the bolt slides across that surface as it locks/unlocks. The problem that several PSA rifles are having is that it wears in extremely fast compared to rifles from elsewhere. If it wears to a smooth shoulder and stops, everything is fine. The worry is that it will continue to wear and affect headspace.

  • @aydenfrac

You could probably grind the diameter of the pin at the bottom instead of cutting off the top. And the reason your not getting tight groups could be that you beat your Zenitco furniture on. That’s putting a lord of pressure on the barrel. Just my thoughts. Carry on.

To avoid issues I buy AKs from Atlantic or K-var *_already_* modified at the factory to avoid just this type of thing: - spending more more than necessary like over $2,000 total USD. - having a warranty or guarantee so that if there is a probable with the gun in anyway, I spend no money getting it worked on. - buying Russian AKs so to have a gun that loves Russian ammo. - to avoid technical work on the rifle that at best just cost me more money to fix my mistake, & at worst having a piece of junk that looks like a Frankenstein gun that will miss a target or jam when you need it to work.
