Hi med student here hoping to clarify some misinformation.. So bones actually remodel and heal very very well, with no scarring within the bones at all if the cut edges are very well approximated. And yes it will always heal, have you seen a person whose skin never closes up? The catch is that it takes much longer, and building back up the strength of the new bone via calcium mineral deposits will take even longer(months/years?). Think about it, this process is no different from what a patient goes through when they fracture a bone. So assuming that the surgeon did everything right and did not damage any neurovasculature, the only real problem is getting adapted to your new biomechanics and getting the newly stretched out muscles to acclimate to the new length through extensive PT(which I reckon people slack off on). It’s not unfeasible that these patients will regain all of their athleticism if they want to. There’s a reason why stuff like this is allowed, because it’s honestly pretty damn SAFE for how powerful of a surgery it is. “Do not harm”, do you think doctors are actually just knowingly crippling people so they can get sued to oblivion? It likely is just an expensive surgery that works pretty damn well and changes the lives of people who are short beyond the expectations of society. You can be jealous, be angry at the guy for his insecurity, but at least be honest and admit that this surgery is freaking awesome especially since weight bearing fully internal rods/screws are an option now.

Yeah dude, I think you're right... I wanna try it in future. You know, I'm a nerd, and I want to change my habit to be better person, to get girls, marry, and having a good life also confidence. I've been tried improving my life but unfortunately, my genes are the boundaries... My current height is 160 My mom is 150 My dad is 167 An Indonesian. 18 yo Average person in my class is above 160. And for the entire student, it's 170 for young people in indonesia. As a medical student, do you think that I've surpassed the height limit? I'm also not sure that I will grow in the near future since my puberty began about 3 years ago. I've concerned about this, is it possible to grow when the grow spurt is closed? I haven't checked it with rontgent....

Because you’re smart! I understand why a really short guy would do this. But losing your mobility is just not worth it at all.

I feel so bad for guys that feel the need to do this. The media is always talking about unrealistic beauty standards for women. Height is not a thing. If women diet and workout they can be attractive. For men, height, one thing they cannot change naturally, is the most important. As a 6'5" man I feel so blessed that I won the genetic lotto in this area, but for my short brothers out there, keep up the good fight, hit the gym and make you the best version you can be. And for all the Lizzos of the world whining about women's beauty standards...eat a salad

No. The safe range is about 7.5 cm for femoral and 5 for tibia. After that complications increase exponentially. You can eek out an extra cm from the tibia with close monitoring but 13.5 cm is the upper limit. depends if you have the money, the free time, the dedication to get back in shape as you'll lose all mobility and muscle, and the pain threshold to go though all this. It wouldn't be worth it anyway for you because you'd go from being average to slightly above average, your height will almost never get mentioned (sources: im 5'11.5 and no one's ever brought up my height)

something y’all don’t get is you don’t only get this surgery for that reason people with leg conditions that make their one leg longer in length have to get this surgery to. I have to get it bc I have a leg way longer then my other one and it causes your back and hips to curve. Based on what ive seen theres no way this doesnt make most peoples legs structurally weaker if you're putting on multiple inches. plus it affects your movement pattern as your body is used to moving certain ways and has its own balance that will be thrown off from lengthening certain bones

Im not gonna lie he does look better now that he's taller.

I used to wish I was taller. My brother, father, uncles etc are all 6'3-7'+ while I'm maybe 5'9. As a man I can understand why he wanted to do this BUT the risks are not worth it IMO. Especially when you have to go thru the process several times to gain any substaintial height. I am thankful for what God gave me and wouldn't take this risk now that I have a family.

Your adopted or your whole family’s adopted most likely your adopted you can’t be 5’9 with your whole family being tall or one of your parents is your biological one and the other isn’t and that’s why your not tall

I'm 5'7, never had any issues with getting women, but I've had issues with men and people in general disrespecting me because of my height. If I wasn't poor I'd get this surgery to be 5'9, wouldn't risk it adding more than that but I'd be happy to at least be average, tall shoes will do the rest.

Will he be able to sprint, lift heavy or bend down easily? Or will it be tough? That would be quite the sacrifice

Body dysmorphia is real thing that a lot of people don't understand. I have it. I'm between 5'11 & 6'0 barefoot. Always wanted to hit 6'2. Now w younger generations having access to hormone therapy to manipulate their growth spurts etc, these surgeries & the fact I'm not an even a full 6'0 barefoot, Im starting to feel short. (Not when comparing myself to others in public, but almost all the time the feeling is in my head) Me saying this would probably insult most guys under 5'10, but guys in my height range that actually care about height understand exactly how bad it sucks to be stuck somewhere in between 5'11 and 6'. And to a 6'2+ guy, they'll just simply never be able to see it from our perspective. It's all relative. At the end of the day I don't think the surgery is worth it (as an athlete) but I also think life is too short to be unhappy & if your height truly bothers you enough, thankfully this is now a feasible option. Possibility after some more time, they could somewhat further advance it slightly to mitigate the risks. (Hopefully by the time I start shrinking from natural aging process)

Yeah I feel you, I'm 5'11 who was predicted to be 6'2 by my pediatrician when I was 5'10 at 14 years old. Then seeing everyone in high school catch up really did a number on my self esteem for a while.

Everything is not always to scale. Hell Moses Malone was a 6'10 NBA player and his hands were so tiny he had to do piano stretches just to grip the ball properly. Imagine if you will, pushing 7 foot and having hands so small you had to stretch them before picking up a basketball 😂😂

I'm 5'6 and while I do honestly get conscientious about my height from time to time especially in a group setting, there's absolutely no way in hell I would ever do this surgery. Enduring months possibly even years of leg pain just to grow maybe about 2 more inches TOPS? F*ck that!
