At the beginning of the season Van picked up a brand new 2015 YZF-R3 and it has turned out to be a better bike than any of us at STG had ever anticipated. The look, seating position, and quality of the Yamaha has made this motorcycle Van's street bike of choice for the summer of 2015. Watch as Van takes you through the steps he takes to service the 2015 Yamaha YZF-R3. He will show you how to do an oil change, adjust the chain tension, check for break wear, and reset the oil life index, as well as other tips and tricks along the way.
If you feel uncomfortable with this modification please take your bike to a licensed motorcycle mechanic. Stay tuned for more installation videos!

I like Brian how he is dead serious and always covers every point. I’m very ocd and he tends to hit every point I run into while servicing a bike. This video was his use of the ruler, chain alignment tool for getting your alignment of your rear wheel correct and pre filling the oil filter. All good stuff.

One thing i Disagree on, using a tool to tighten oil filter, you can easily over tighten it and make the seals useless. You can easily hand tighten a oil filter just enough wear the seal will bond and it will be difficult to get it off the next time.

This video is the singular reason I chose to do my first service myself, instead of shelling out $300+ dollars for my dealership to do it. I bought everything from STG for $100.47 (filter, oil, chain cleaner, chain paste, and chain alignment tool). Thanks for making these videos, I hope you guys do more for later services. I'm sure the $4,000 mile service is going to hit me where it hurts. I'd love to see videos on replacing levers, and maybe R6 throttle tube mod! ;)

Awesome video man. In aviation maintenance, the only time we use new drain plug washers is if it is a crush washer or the washer is damaged/warped. Absolutely nothing wrong with reusing a drain plug washer that is still in good shape. Also I have to add that you are an excellent teacher - I'm an instructor by trade, and I wouldn't be surprised if you told me you have years of teaching experience.

+David Murray I never was really into street bikes for the longest time, I liked the aesthetics of Cruisers more (no experience actually riding sadly, at least not yet) This however, for about 5k? I seriously can't really find any other bike that is as newbie friendly and within a similar displacement than this. Made me really re-evaluate my tastes in bikes, especially since I plan on making this a commuter vehicle when the whether is favorable.

To clean my chain I put the bike up on a wheel stand as you do. I put a rag in my left hand under the middle of the chain as you do. And I know people are going to freak out on my technique, but I turn the bike on and put it in first and let the wheel spin as I spray WD-40 down through the chain into my rag hand below. I then close my rag hand around the chain to catch excess. I even pinch the center slightly to get the middle of the chain. After about 30 seconds I switch to my chain wax and do the same thing. The rags are not tattered, in fact they look like the one you used, so no loose ends to catch the chain. Been doing it this way for 35 years with never an incident. ----- I have to say, I like that chain alignment tool you used. I had a laser about drove me cross-eyed.

From what I've learned so far and have been told prior.. any oil filter that has a nut on the top is not meant for installation with a wrench. The nut is meant for the removal process but it all really depends on how much torque you're putting down if you chose to use a wrench to tighten it. Hand tight is all it needs for most car/bike oil filters. Some people may not know this and can end up stripping the threads on the filter or in worst case, the threads on the block side.

+Jayee In most cases I would say you are giving good advice! I feel comfortable with my torque sensitivity with a wrench so I worry about it less than most. I have for sure seen my fair share of over tightened oil filters! Great advice, thanks for watching!

Hey man bought my r3 a week ago as my first bike. Your videos have been amazing, earned a sub for sure. One question, I've noticed some fluid under the overflow vents pretty much every time I ride. I am pretty sure it's gas, but because it's been so hot I haven't got a good sample to be sure. Is there a chance it could be coolant? How can I tell?

I like the safety wire idea but why drill through and attach to the pan? Why not just attach the filter nut right to the drain plug? If the wire is in tact, neither will be able to rotate loose.

Love your videos, quick question about brake cleaner. What can I safely use bake cleaner on? In this video you use it liberally on the oil filter and side engine case. Is it safe on powder coated engine surfaces? I thought that brake and carb cleaner will eat away paint. Just curious, as I would definitely like to use brake cleaner more often in my maintenance jobs on my bike, I'm just always scared it will eat away and ruin finishes/paint.

+Justin R. It will in many cases eat away at painted surfaces. I have not experienced any problems with powder coat but I cannot say for sure. Usually it is just used in our case to clean away heavy dirt/grime and is usually followed up by a less abrasive cleaner.

Just bought a 2015 R3 with 370 miles from original owner, first service is coming up and you're video will save me some money from taking it to a dealer and have them service it, thank you for this video. Quick question, does brake fluid, and other fluids have to be flushed and fill with new fluid for its first service? Also after doing oil change with this synthetic oil, when will my next oil change be?

Hello Brian, i really enjoy all your videos, i've learned lot of tricks and tips for my r3 thanks to all of your excelent videos, in regards to the oil change, which oil filter do you consider is the best? between the vortex you are using, the k&n, or Hiflofiltro? to use it with Motul 7100 in my bike, best regards

Hello there, in terms of procedure I messed up a little bit and got impatient for some reason. I didn't realize that 2 L was not enough to even start filling up the "engine oil" window thing. So for some reason I resetted the "OIL" light. Now that everything is properly done, I can't reset the oil light and that it just stays on. I was wondering if it has any affect on the bike. Its a 2017 r3. Some help will be appreciated.

If the bike was on front and rear stands would it read proper? I’m just wondering cause I have a hard time holding the bike level and trying to read that thing and fill it with oil at the same time because of where it is located... and I don’t have one of those front wheel lock holder things..

Hii... I saw this video and did my first own chain maintenance on my R3. Is it necessary to use a torque wrench for tightening the axle nuts? I used a normal spanner and ring spanner. The torque wrench is very expensive. I've got all the other tools.
