Loved the spookiness of this episode.
I'm still wondering what she was saying to people to make them scared and run away from Ruby....

1899 was such a great show, I can’t believe Netflix cancelled it. Have you seen the creators’ previous Netflix series, DARK ? If not that would make an amazing reaction one day, it’s similar to 73 Yards but I won’t spoil how. There are a million theories about this episode but here’s mine: Firstly I think there are a lot of clues hidden in the story the villagers make up to scare Ruby. A lot of what they said ended up being true which ties into the theme of superstition this season. The woman is called Mad Jack’s herald and they also speak about a liminal space which is maybe where the Doctor is trapped. So as punishment for breaking the fairy circle and unleashing Mad Jack (nuclear war), Ruby is forced to become his herald. Literally stalking her younger self, trying to warn herself of his nuclear war. And the Doctor is banished entirely. Different punishments because one stepped on the circle and one read the scrolls. The woman we see haunting Ruby throughout the episode can’t be the same version as the one at the end of the episode who finally breaks the loop. So I think the version we see haunting Ruby is from a previous loop, one where she never stopped Roger ap Gwilliam, and where nuclear war actually broke out. So in the main timeline, they don’t break the fairy circle, and Roger ap Gwilliam only leads the world to the BRINK of nuclear war. In the first loop, they break the fairy circle, the Doctor disappears, but there is no woman following Ruby, years pass and nuclear war erupts, and at the end of her life Ruby, full of regret, is sent back along her timeline to warn herself to not make the same mistake she did. The second loop is what we see, they break the fairy circle, the Doctor disappears, and this old woman haunts Ruby, years pass and Ruby infiltrates Albion, prevents nuclear war, and at the end of her life, full of hope, she’s sent back along her timeline to warn herself not to break the fairy circle in the first place, which puts the main timeline back in place. I think people run away because they just sense something horrific and unexplainable from her and the timeline she comes from, and they somehow know it’s Ruby's fault. She’s literally a Herald of nuclear war. Even Roger ap Gwilliam himself is horrified by her. Maybe he saw visions of the harsh reality of what he’d campaigned for, or sensed that he would die in the crossfire too.

I know for me I've been viewing this episode as like metaphorical for the fear ruby would have about being abandoned, like the fear that there's just something inherent about you that scares away everyone in your life and coming to terms with it and living with those fears and with that part of yourself? I do kinda think the hand signs are stuff are more just to create speculation than playing into those themes which i don't particularly like but I also think any specific answers kinda take away from what i love about it as an episode

I agree, at first i wanted to know but sometimes not knowing is better. I like hesring everyones interpretation of this episode and i do think it is about Ruby's fear of being abandoned and having it manifest everytime someone intereacted with the woman.

Sorry, long post alert!! This one was a little divisive. Some people want answers, some people like not knowing the answers. Personally, I'm in camp not knowing. We only ever got to know as much as Ruby did, no more, no less and that's what sold the episode to me. My take on it is that the Tardis landing on/near the fairy circle, AND the Doctor breaking the circle opened up the realm of the supernatural. Ruby read the first note which was "I miss you" and that invoked the curse of the Doctor disappearing. The second note about Mad Jack connected the name of Roger Ap Gwilliam who the Doctor had just mentioned. The most important aspect of the curse is Ruby's fear of abandonment. The woman didn't need to say anything specific, it wasn't about what she said, it was about the fact that it made everyone abandon Ruby. As she got older, just having the woman there was enough for people to leave Ruby (as we saw with the breakups). As for the pub scene, it's a small town and oftentimes people come from big cities and act like these small towns haven't caught up to modern marvels. That's why they were so tetchy about Ruby asking if she could pay by phone. They probably get visitors all the time who think they don't carry the technology and it offends them. Same with trying to frighten her, a lot of people think that small-town folk really believe in that, so they thought they'd play along not realizing that Ruby really is living that out.

Oh this makes so much sense about the woman pretty much manifesting her fear of people leaving her. Thank you for that point of view. Im gonna have to rewatch because im sure i missed so many things the first time around!

Personally after watching this season I’d jump into David tennant trilogy episodes just before Ncuti takes over the role however you could wait for that and watch the 2001 Doctor Who seasons all the way up to modern and then watch those- I’d also say to check out some of the top rated episodes of each Doctor from the classic series to possibly pick up on some key traits/plots of the franchise:) however you don’t necessarily need to know anything of classic who to watch the newer seasons! love your reactions/videos!! Can’t wait for more :)

@@AnotherReactionChannel_ Well, I had never heard of Doctor Who, as an unsuspecting Norwegian in my early twenties, but happened to catch an episode called Human Nature on BBC Nordic many years ago. To this day my first doctor, David Tennant, and my first companion, Freema Agyeman, remain my favorites. Ncuti has recently climbed the rank’s through , love him ❤️

Well, that was an excellent episode of The Twilight Zone, with great work by Millie... I'm not a fan of this "supernatural" kick RTD is on this series - I can't think of anything less Doctor Who, but each to their own of course. This had to be a Doctor-light episode as Ncuti was still busy shooting Sex Education at the time, but that was a wasted Doctor Who episode for me given that we only get 8 episodes a year now (plus the Christmas Special), so that's now really just seven. There have been good (and some not-so-good!) Doctor-light episodes in the past, (one good one coming up) so it can be done, and if we still had 13 episodes a year I would not be disappointed and would have enjoyed the episode for what it is, but with only eight... The next episode returns to a much more typical Doctor Who style 😀

I really loved this episode even if the Doctor wasnt really present, the story really took me on a ride. I also wish it was 13 episodes to explore this world better but i guess i have decades to catch up on anyway so its not too bad 🤣 Cant wait for the next episode!!

Geast reaction - RTD the showrunner deliberately won't say what the old lady says to people - and there's a few theories about what's going on here - i m going with Ruby breaks off on her own time loop to defeat mad jack. I actually noticed a few things during the reaction that i'd missed. Yes, Kate and UNIT are returning things from NuWho/Classic Who. This is more the quality of story Who should be doing - i suspect the stories that aren't up there might be partly targeting the Disney audience. Can't wait for you to start NuWho at Rose...!
