Yes, Identity(2003) is another very good thriller with John Cusack, the protagonist from this one. I also liked him in Hot Tub Time Machine(2010), but that's a comedy.

The theatrical ending is the best ending. It ties everything up thematically and actually ends the story the way it's supposed to. This ending was the studio ending where the studio wanted to end on a scare. Funnily enough my ex gf and I saw this opening night and the air conditioning in our theatre was out so it was like 30°c inside with everyone in there. Definitely set the mood when the room started to heat up in the movie too. Lol

Eh, I don’t know. I get that people think the jumpscare is cheap, but honestly, I feel like Mike taking down the room with him and reuniting with his daughter is a much more satisfying ending. It might be a downer ending, I guess, but it's a downer ending in a bittersweet way, in my opinion.

Trivia about the short story: 1408 was originally written in Stephen King’s book On Writing; it was used as-if I remember right-an example of how he rewrites a first draft, and he liked the idea enough to finish the story later. The story was first published as part of an audiobook anthology Blood & Smoke read by Stephen King. The story was later published in print in the collection Everything’s Eventual along with the other two stories from Blood & Smoke, Lunch at The Gotham Cafe, and In The Death Room.

According to the director’s commentary the idea to cast Samual L. Jackson as the manager came from Quentin Tarantino; in the short story and the script Olin is described as a meek middle aged white man, but when the director (Mikael Håfström) was talking to Tarantino about the movie Quentin said audiences have seen hundreds of old white guys warning the protagonist to stay out of the haunted place, but when someone like Sam Jackson is scared people will take notice. And he was right, Jackson’s performance in laying out the backstory of the room does a really great job of establishing the danger and setting the mood for the rest of the movie. Also “It’s an evil fucking room” is a great line and a great use of the PG-13 F-Bomb

Loving that you understand where Mike is coming from at the beginning that he would have no reason to believe it was actually a problematic room. I imagine he started the haunting books hoping maybe for proof that there was something and then over time just got jaded. Or maybe even as a way to prove to himself that he was right in what they should have done for his daughter, the line "And even if there was there is no God to protect us from them is there?" is a very telling line. Really shows us how the character thinks, he is willing to admit that he might be wrong about the dark monsters and ghosts but not God himself. *edit* Just finished your reaction and loved it from start to finish, and also will say I agree this is one of my favorite thriller/horror movies that I have seen and I've seen many and love the genre as well. And yes, John Cusack is a very good/incredible actor and would recommend his other works as well. Don't think I have seen a movie of his that I didn't like. His sister Joan is a great one as well though I think she does mostly romantic themed movies.

This is a good one! I like scary movies, too. John Cusack has been in dozens of movies starting in the early 80s, although I have to admit I don't think I've seen any of his more recent movies. Some of my favorites are: Better Off Dead (1985); Say Anything (1989); Bob Roberts (1992); Runaway Jury (2003); Identity (2003); and my absolute favorite, Bullets Over Broadway (1994), which is also one of my favorite movies of all time. It's clever and hilarious and has an all star cast that knocks it out of the park.

Love this movie, underrated gem from Stephen King, both as a book and as a movie. I’m a sucker for psychological torture and trickery in horror movies, but this one somehow managed to feel too cruel to the protagonist at times. Also, completely unrelated to this vid (sorry), but Marvel JUST released the trailer for their upcoming series Echo and I NEED to see you react to it. We Daredevil fans have all had doubts about Disney’s ability to continue the Netflix shows in a manner that remains faithful to the tone and contents of the originals, but this trailer alone makes me think that they might just be able to pull it off. Already it comes off as much darker, grittier, and bloodier than anything Disney’s Marvel has ever put out. Sorry again for getting off topic

5:38-5:48 I’m glad to see someone else take into account the number of deaths. Now even if you’re someone like Mike, and have no belief in the supernatural, from a rational and logical point of view you’d still be highly cautious of room 1408. 56 people dying in a single room, all within an hour of having checked in, is not normal. Whether the cause is some kind of highly toxic mold or an abnormal gas leak that causes hallucinations, SOMETHING is clearly killing everyone that goes in. Just viewing the situation from that perspective would be enough to dissuade me from entering the room.

I love the Lovecraftian nature of the Stephen King multiverse. There are various locations in his works where the border between dimensions is thinnest or even split open (sometimes referred to as a "thinny" or "ini") and the corrupting influence of other dimensions seeps through (ie. The Outlook Hotel, The Marsten House, Pet Sematary) or entities and other creatures can cross over (ie. IT, Tak, The Outsider, creatures of The Mist, The Kid of Castle Rock, Randall Flagg). And just as the Shining gives varying degrees of psychic ability to humans, a lot of these entities could be considered akin to psychic vampires. They feed off of different emotions like fear (IT) and grief (Outsider)...or your life-force itself (Tak, The True Knot) and can fuck with your mind or drive you insane.
