Although headgear is mandatory at school-organized events during the regular wrestling season, at privately run off-season events such as this, tournament management has discretion as to whether or not to require headgear. At this tournament, management elected not to mandate headgear.

I really wish there was a rule to STFU if you're on the sidelines. Shit is annoying and distracting while you're trying to wrestle. Gotta hear the ref and whistle.

Can an American explain the position of wrestling in US sport? Is it prestigious? Very popular? Does every high school have a team?

Not every high school has a team, but the same could be said about any sport. Although it is considered a "minor sport" after revenue-making football and basketball, it is very popular at top wrestling colleges such as Penn State, Michigan or Iowa in the BIG Conference and Oklahoma State in the Big XII Conference among others.
