Johnston was really fierce! Really exciting to watch. Riley was tough - no quit in him, that's for sure. Impressive match-up.

Riley was stronger, yet Johnston was quicker with better instincts. He might become a good college wrestler!

How does US High School Wrestling define a pin? Starting at 1:58 it seems as if the ref missed two, possibly three pins. And as a side note, could the host school/venue get a few volunteers to push brooms over the mats between bouts? This mat looks awfully dirty.

NFHS Rule 5. Section 11. Article 1. "A fall occurs when any part of both shoulders or both scapula of either wrestler are in contact with the mat for two seconds. The two seconds (one-thousand-one, one-thousand-two) shall be a silent count and shall start only after the referee is in position to observe if a fall is imminent. A fall is imminent when any part of both shoulders or both scapula of either wrestler are in contact with the mat. The shoulders or scapula must be held in continuous contact with the mat. A fall terminates wrestling."

I was thinking Jared Johnson got the fall there clearly quite early on. The Ref tried to move the arm of the wrestler to see instead of himself moving.

In these videos, I find referees are routinely out of position. Some of them are too obese to get on the mat.

@@kevinburke9319 This venue is a multipurpose facility that is primarily used for non-wrestling related sports. They have a permanent base layer of artificial turf that is partially covered by mats during the occasional wrestling tournament. Although it looks like dirt, those specs are actually a component of the artificial turf that travels onto the mat from peoples' shoes as they walk around the facility. It's incredibly annoying because it constantly gets into your shoes and so you have to keep taking your shoes off if you don't want to feel like you're walking on sand. That being said, it's everywhere all the time and so it is virtually impossible to keep them off of the mats at this facility.
